this entire series is the chronicles of an ambitious and wistful young woman fighting for her life every day against corporate labor induced anxiety and psychosis. retsuko faces the relatable daily battle of office politics, and the social hierarchy of the animal kingdom (a great analogy for the office).
this show is a great cultural critique of Japanese work culture and the social pressures and exploitations that come with the hierarchies of global capitalism.

commentary applies to all seasons:
while this series does have its devilman actionbaby scenes, featuring otherworldly powers and whatnot, the series as a whole centers around the mundane life under modern capitalism that drain a person's "soul". it truly makes me wonder if the soul-drain idea was the direct inspiration for trying to cross over The Devil from The Bible and famous chain restaurant McDonald's.

the segmentation and alienation that comes from a capitalist "division of labor" is the central premise to each worker being a cell in a system. from red blood cells to platelets and T cells, Cells At Work is a fun reimagining of the means of "production" of the human body itself, and the "alienation" of a worker with a dream of more.
