Bitches be like "It's so wholesome and realistic!" and then it's tagged as erotica.

This is A Silent Voice but gay.
The author wrote it before realizing it needed to be gay and that actually worked in her favor. The romance became a side plot while the main focus was centered on the struggles of those who are hard of hearing people. While they do also talk about fully deaf people, I like the representation that Kouhei brings as it genuinely didn't cross my mind that his struggles might not be completely the same as deaf individuals, and you really don't see that.
Also this is funny as fuck Taichi got me rolling bro LMAO

This manga was a big hit back in 2014 since it brought a lot of realistic representation to the medium. What I like about this is that the protagonist, Yaichi, is your stereotypical homophobe. Homophobia in manga is usually quiet or just one or two lines of dialogue as a joke, but here Yaichi cuts off his brother and refused to speak to him for years simply because he was gay. When he meets his brother's husband, Mike, we're able to see him grow as a person, as learns about queer people and their struggles. The manga takes its time to fully explain and educate the reader about LGBT history and culture, and it's the only manga I've read to do so.
The author is also a gay bara artist, which leads to the refreshing change of the protag being a buff hair gay man vs the bi-curious pretty boys we all know and hate.

This cover looks mad sus but I swear it's good.
It's very rare in manga that you see identities other than gay, and even rarer for them to actually mention them by name and not just implied. The protagonist is a Non-Binary Pansexual who constantly faces discrimination and dysphoria about their body. Throughout the manga they meet a loving group of friends who share their experiences while also discovering themselves. Lesbian, tran, GNC, and questioning people are all represented with a story that hit so close to home it made me sob at 3am.

Written by a gay man, this manga shows a mother quietly supporting her closeted son in any way she can. It's adorable and depicts what it's like to grow up queer when not everyone around you is 100% supportive. I love that it focuses not on romance but the mother and her relationship with her son. She overcomes her biases and educates herself and others, all for someone she loves.

This one is particularly special to me since Mine-kun is not only Asexual, but bi-romantic so he just like me fr fr.
While this manga is short, the way it delivers the story is amazing. It's representation of dating as an asexual is something I have never seen done before. It doesn't vilify or blame anyone but rather helps us understand what relationships mean to different people and that it's ok to want something different. The feeling of being unable to give your partner what they want still haunts me so I'm glad I was able to experience it in manga form.
There's also a lesbian side character which is cool.

Furuya Nagisa is a god-tier author and this is her best work.
Many "besties to dating" stories often leave out the part where the characters are actaully besties. Kimi was Natsu no Naka breaks this and is the rare case where the characters feel like friends before lovers. While there are some romantic moments, the manga makes it clear through their dialogue and actions that they'd still be friends, with or without the presence of romantic feelings. Even after they start dating they're shown hanging out, joking, and enjoying being in each other's company as something other than boyfriends.
Read the rest of the series if you can <3

I was so confused why this manga was in a bunch of recommended BL stacks but after reading it, it def deserves to be there. Instead of making queer issues the focus they use them to relate to the theme of change and uncertainty of the future. A very refreshing kinda rep.
Don't read the last chapter tho that shit blows lol

I'm not a fan of GL since the same tropes get repeated all the time and the stories are pretty dull. Kase-san does break the mold a little by having one of the girls be a butch, which you don't see too often in manga. However it does tend to be a bit boring at times since, for me at least, I never got super invested in their relationship. Honestly, I'd recommend you just watch the movie since it's well-animated and short, but the manga is pretty decent as well.
