Synopsis

While most girls desire popularity among boys, Futaba Yoshioka wants the exact opposite. After attracting many admirers back in middle school which resulted in her being shunned by her female classmates, she decided that high school will be her chance to revamp her image. Therefore, she starts acting unfeminine and indifferent to boys, allowing her to make some "friends" along the way.

Little does Futaba know, her life will take another drastic turn when her first love, Kou Mabuchi, returns after his sudden disappearance years ago in middle school. Despite his extended absence, the fond memories they shared together still linger in her mind, and she wishes to return to those days. But she realizes that the sweet, gentle boy of the past has completely vanished, and in his place stands someone cold and pessimistic. While he admits that her feelings for him back then were mutual, he warns that they can never go back to the past, as everything, including him, has changed.

Ao Haru Ride follows Futaba as she searches for true love and friendship, all while trying her best to stay true to herself.

Quick Take: A well-executed, beautifully drawn shoujo manga with an engaging story that's not that easy to guess.

Story: I can't say that it doesn't have clichés, but I also can't say that it's fully cliché. But nonetheless, what's wrong with a cliché? The only thing wrong with a cliché is if you do it in a formulaic way that's not engaging. This manga did so in a good, engaging way.

Characters: I feel this is one of the manga's strongest points. Our female protagonist Futaba is not your average shoujo protagonist. She is not a simple damsel in distress. We see her change and grow over ...

Mixed Feelings
I watched the anime many years ago, and finally got around to reading the manga. I think the manga has a strong start, but the anime adapted the best parts of the manga. It is slightly dragged on afterwards, and I do appreciate a slow burn but there was a lot of angst. At the end, it did redeem it to a degree and tied up some loose ends, but I do think it took too long to get to the point, so it was not as satisfying as it could've been.

If you enjoyed the anime, you should consider the manga as there's some ...

Pros:
- The characters are drawn well and expressive.
- The characters struggling with being upfront about their feelings and making bad choices are realistic, which creates relatability for the reader.
- The manga avoids some of the most repetitive rom-com tropes, which is refreshing.
- The double chapters (40+ pages) mean that the chapters content aren't predictable most of the time.

Cons:
- The backgrounds are lacking in quality or simply just not drawn.
- The characters are pretty unlikeable, probably due to how relatable they are. This affects the story in broad strokes, making progress in relationships lack meaning, as the characters continuesly sabotages their own interests. This in turn, ...
