Synopsis

On the surface, Jin Kanzaki may seem like an ordinary street urchin, but he possesses a supernatural strength that he uses for the welfare of his fellow man, or so his grandfather wishes. Much to his chagrin, his grandchild demands 10,000 yen for every good deed that he carries out. However, Jin's modest life is suddenly thrown into disarray when he encounters a player, a deadly entity possibly responsible for several mysterious murders.

As Jin attempts to navigate the situation by punching his way through every obstacle, a group of mysterious men desperately hunt down an individual with a ring-shaped mark on their hand. As they continue their investigation, various secrets surrounding the world begin to unravel—and it seems like Jin himself might be the solution to the puzzle.

THAT CAME FROM THE EARLY 00'S! (and with visual key ): Zetman shows a dark and raw side of heroes that really touches something deep inside you. You can feel the intensity and importance of each fight, along with questions about morality that stay beneath the surface. One of the most noticeable parts of the manga is its artwork—carefully detailed character designs and exciting fight scenes that rival classics like Berserk. Every panel pulls you into this bleak, dystopian world, with artwork that captures every muscle, shadow, and moody background with real passion. However, even with its beautiful visuals, the story can sometimes feel uneven ... in pacing and a bit hard to follow, making you put in extra effort to stay fully involved. The setup—showing Jin’s brutal, superhuman strength and Kouga’s sincere ideals as they grapple with what justice truly means—is very engaging. But as the story goes on, it can get confusing with sudden time jumps, unexpected twists, and characters that aren’t given enough development. Female characters, in particular, often come off as stereotypes, Fitting into tired roles that seem to serve primarily as props for the male protagonists' journey or as objects of sexualization.

On the positive side, the series courageously tackles big themes—like the moral struggles of being a hero, questioning what it really costs to protect justice, and how these moral choices are often complicated and gray. These ideas pack a strong emotional punch, even if sometimes they get lost because of uneven pacing—especially in later chapters where unresolved storylines and an open ending leave you wishing for clearer answers. If you like slow, tense builds that quietly simmer with suspense, you’ll appreciate how this adds depth; but if you prefer quick, smoothly told stories, it can feel a bit frustrating. Despite its flaws, Zetman is exciting with its fierce action and impressive visuals—making it a must-read for seinen fans who enjoy bold, visually striking stories. Even with some rough patches in flow, its raw emotional core and powerful art help you feel something meaningful beneath the surface.

Mixed Feelings

I want to rate this much higher, but the story falls off hard towards the end. There are several major plot points that were alluded to and then almost completely dropped as if the author completely forgot that they were a part of the story. The build up of the story is really good and there is a lot of mystery surrounding the characters and the background to the events happening in the story, which all feel really good as your reading through it, up until the end.

Zetman has cool action scenes, monsters with interesting designs and and even some emotive and heartwarming moments between its characters. That's why it's such a shame that it ends up being ruined by several major problems:

1- It's extremely bloated: the author did everything possible to extend the length of this manga, inserting lots of unnecessarily long explanations, portraying endless "philosophical" talks with no interest, and even reusing pages frequently (and not only in flashbacks: if a situation is momentarily interrupted by a different scene elsewhere, he makes sure to show you the last few pages of the first situation again when it resumes).
