Synopsis

The author of the novel The Emperor and the Saint faces an unexpected twist: she reincarnates as the mage Fiona Green, the final boss character that she set up to be devastatingly defeated. Seven years before the plot begins, 13-year-old Fiona's cruel family sends her to a near-certain death in the snowy and monster-infested territory of Duke Abel Heylon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this manhwa for its charming romance and lovely character development between the leads. Their relationship was heartwarming and engaging from start to near-finish. However, the conclusion felt unexpectedly rushed and underdeveloped, resolving major conflicts a bit too easily—almost relying on a "power of friendship" moment that didn't quite land with the weight the story deserved.

Is the story unique? The premise follows some familiar tropes of the genre, and in many parts, the plot developments were predictable. But honestly, that's part of its charm! I really wanted to like this manga/manhwa. I really did. It was a bit like eating ice cream with shards of glass in it: most of the time it’s quite tasty, but every now and then something suddenly slices open your stomach and it hurts.

Author of My Own Destiny is about a young woman who is reborn as the final boss of her own book. As one would expect from a book, there is suffering that has to be resolved by the protagonists. The final boss she is reborn as, in particular, suffered greatly. After finding herself in this situation, she first secures her own ... survival. More by accident than by intention, she ends up turning her life around by 180 degrees: suddenly everyone likes her, suddenly she has a loving father and a fiancé who likes her as well. When she then looks at her life and at her loved ones, she is suddenly overcome by feelings of guilt: SHE wrote the story of this world, SHE is responsible for all the suffering that her loved ones—but also every other character in this world—has to endure. While she has to learn to deal with this guilt, she experiences the classic “reborn as the villainess in a romance story” world: there is a crown prince who must be defeated, an evil curse that plagues the land, her family consists of villains, and somehow she also has to make sure that the story continues the way she knows it—because otherwise her advantage of having written the book fades away.

The book starts by demanding a massive leap of faith from its readers. Just think about it: you wake up in a world you previously wrote about. What would you think? Would you declare yourself the creator of ALL creatures, ALL people, ALL plants, ALL stones, ALL situations, and EVERYTHING else in this world? Would you really be so arrogant as to assume that you were powerful enough to create an entire dimension, even though you had no powers before and still don’t have any that would make this possible? And would you then go so far as to see only the negative and blame yourself for it? I find the protagonist’s reaction extremely unrealistic. Not only is she arrogant enough to say that she is the OMNIPOTENT CREATOR of this entire world, she also looks ONLY AT THE BAD THINGS?! But okay, I thought, that’s just her character, and other characters slowly pull her out of her self-destructive, depressive behavior, so everything’s fine… right? NO!!!! It feels like an endless loop of “omg everything is my fault :(”, “hey I don’t have to blame myself for everything :)”, “omg everything is my fault :(”…

Aside from that, the story is very generic. I actually like stories like this, even though the time skips that occur regularly really bothered me. BUT every single time the protagonist fell back into her miserable self-pity, I felt like throwing my phone or screen—together with the manhwa—out the window!

Conclusion: It would have been okay if the protagonist weren’t so endlessly self-absorbed that she not only believes herself to be the creator of the world, but also feels horribly sorry for herself and drags everything around her into ruin because she hurts herself through her depressive behavior.
