Synopsis

In a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, there exists a bias: carnivores are just mindless predators in the eyes of many herbivores. However, when an alpaca named Tem is murdered within the walls of Cherryton High School, the fear toward carnivores skyrockets to an all-time high.

Legoshi, a student at this school, is a gray wolf who is quite awkward despite his fearsome appearance. When turmoil affects his school life, he is forced to confront the divide between herbivores and carnivores, as well as his own place in this society. This is further complicated by his supposedly romantic feelings toward a herbivore, which might not be what they seem.

Beastars details Legoshi's struggles against his inner demons while living in a society that is unforgiving toward his kind.

BackgroundBeastars won the 11th Manga Taisho Award in 2018. In the same year, it also won the New Work Prize at the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the 42nd Kodansha Manga Award in the Shounen category. In 2020, VIZ Media's translation of the manga was nominated for the Eisner Award in the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia category.

The series was published in English by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint from July 16, 2019, to January 17, 2023. It has also been published in Argentina by Editorial Ivréa, in French by Éditions Ki-oon from January 24, 2019, to June 2, 2022, and in Spain by Milky Way Ediciones.

How come I, "Wolf Beggar," haven't reviewed the manga yet?

Despite the joke, it really took me a while to review this wonderful work. As I said in my anime review, Beastars is a work that makes you think about social issues. The difference between species, carnivores and herbivores, is used in a way that can be interpreted as a metaphor for our racial differences in real life. By trying this, you can understand more about how this conflict is addressed in the work. As nonsensical as it may seem in the work, it's clear that it reflects real life. Another point I want to address ... is how this social pressure makes the characters become things they didn't want to be but simply had no choice. As in Haru's case, she had to choose this promiscuous life to free herself from the pressure/fear she felt about everything around her. It was something imposed on her by this corrupted world. At the end of the book, we don't get the perfect ending everyone expected—well, at least I imagined it would be different, but I liked the ending. The world doesn't change, no matter how hard Legoshi tries. The world doesn't care about him, but he does care about the world. Therefore, even though he's incapable of changing this cruel world he lives in, he changes himself and those around him.

Beyond this social aspect, I find it incredible how the character Sagwan raises reflective points that make us, like Legoshi, change our way of thinking. Despite the prejudice against it being a "furry work," Beastars is much more than that; it's a work that addresses a very well-crafted social theme and develops the world it created. I gave it an 8 because it had a profound impact on me and made me think. I strongly recommend giving it a chance; you'll be surprised.

Como pode que eu o "Lobo Pidão" não fiz review do mangá ainda?

Apesar da brincadeira eu realmente demorei para fazer uma review dessa obra maravilhosa. Como eu disse na minha review do anime, Beastars é uma obra que te coloca para pensar em problemas sociais, a diferença estre espécies, carnívoros e herbívoros é utilizado de uma forma que pode ser interpretada como uma metáfora para as nossas diferenças de raças na vida real, tento isso mente você consegue entender mais sobre como esse conflito na obra é abordado, por mais sem sentido que pareça na obra esses conflitos é nítido que isso é um reflexo da vida real. Outro ponto que quero abordar é como essa pressão social faz os personagens se tornarem coisas das quais eles não queriam ser mas apenas não tiveram escolha, como no caso da Haru, ela teve que optar por essa vida promiscua para se livrar dessa pressão/medo que sentia de tudo aquilo ao seu redor, foi algo que foi imposto a ela por causa desse mundo corrompido. No final da obra não temos aquele final perfeito que todos esperavam, bom ao menos eu imaginei que seria diferente mas gostei de como foi o final. O mundo não muda, por mais que o Legoshi se esforce, o mundo não se importa com ele, mas ele se importa com o mundo, por isso, mesmo sendo incapaz de mudar esse mundo cruel em que vive, ele muda ele mesmo e aqueles a sua volta.

Além desse ponto social acho incrivel como o personagem Sagwan coloca pontos reflexivos que fazem nós assim como Legoshi mudar sua forma de pensar. Apesar do preconceito por ser a "obra dos furrys", Beastars é muito mais que isso, é uma obra que aborda uma temática social muito bem trabalhada e que sabe desenvolver o mundo que criou. Minha nota 8 se deve pois foi uma obra que me impactou muito e me pos para pensar. Recomendo fortemente que deem uma chance a obra pois vão se surpreender.

Mixed Feelings

I found Beastars' setting very intriguing and that was why after watching the anime (at the time of writing the 2 available seasons), I immediately picked up the manga wanting more from Legoshi, Louis, Haru and the surrounding world.

The setting - modern times but filled with intelligent anthropomorphic animals - was explored deeply and presented the possible issues that could occur, mainly, the divide between carnivores and herbivores, racial and cultural stereotyping. Which I enjoyed.

And up to the Interspecies Relations arc I was not able to find a thing I could dislike about story, pacing, characters. It all flowed well and the developing relationship between ...

It had some good potential, but not only got prolonged, but also rushed at the end?

It started very good and simple, with a weird but creative Animal world and a murder mystery, but it got to a point where not only that conflict was resolved, but also everything else was going in circles

What started as a School Mystery ended up trying to be a new Fighting Shonen with power ups, Instant healing and Special habilities and all that.
There were LOTS of things AND EVEN CHARACTERS that got introduced but then were never seen again or never mentioned! And it wasn't just a minor thing, ...
