Grimgar being one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen and I don't think it's a personal preference at all. I can't understand at all how it didn't receive the attention it deserved

Anime wasn't as popular a decade ago. It only went mainstream world wide during covid. Grimgar is also a very detailed anime and doesn't go for hype factors like flashy fights and instead well thought out tactical approach which isn't as popular to the general mainstream audience. It's pretty popular in Japan though.

I'm assuming ur talking abt Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. While I never finished it, one reason why is mainly cause it was looked as "any other isekai" that normally exists and has character/s that get isekai'd as they try to defeat a big bad at the end of the series.

I love the backgrounds in Grimgar, they are very pretty. Children of the Whales has a similiar artstyle in that regard.

WTF are you talking about? MAL marks as the fourth most popular anime it's season.

If you mean Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (2016), then I didn't care much for it due to how stupid it was. Seemed the entire first half was trying to ride on the Madoka SUFFERING train by plot contrivances so silly it made me laugh out loud. Still not bottom tier as far as isekai goes, but those have a fierce competition of their own.

Overlooked? It's in the top 300 most watched anime, that's quite a feat.

I will never understand the hype for this one, just the most average isekai imaginable, with middle school drama and no flavor at all

@kalepf22 First season was alright, second part 1 meh and second part 2 unwatchable. Haven't bothered with the third season, yet.

"beautiful anime"

If every character suffering non stop, not even in a realistic way, without trying to change their approach is supposed to be beautiful...
But I guess torture porn was trending in that period.

@MegamiRem I don't think mainstream popularity matters in this case because it's not the type of anime that would draw-in the popular and casual crowd.

@MegamiRem Nah, anime was mainstream before Covid, it only got more popular.

if the art is the only positive you can list, then that's probably why nobody talks about it.

I remember watching grimgar in the past because some youtubers really liked it. In the end I just thought it was meh. I can not name a single character. I think anime fans prefer pretty colors to decent plots which I disagree with.

I liked Grimgar but it didn't really stood out to me. The visuals and animation were great [strong on character animation], plot wasn't bad [from I remember at least, It's been like… 5 years since I watched it? - still except the first 3 episodes the rest is a blur], but the characters were pretty forgettable [strong on the male cast, waifu lovers had more to work with]

By "beautiful" do you mean the visuals or the overall? I like this anime, but it doesn't really stand out in any way. It's just a super standard isekai, with the only difference being the emphasis on realism.

I agree this was a rare Isekai-done-right and thought it was very profound in some scenes. I think I have mentioned it on these forums before.
Can't remember if I ever finished it, it was emotionally heavy.

The watercolor-inspired backgrounds, soft lighting, and muted color palette set that shit apart visually, I give you that. But it was competing with shit like "Gate", "KonoSuba", "Heavy Object", "One-Punch Man", "Noragami", "Chivalry of a Failed Knight", "The Asterisk War", "Re:ZERO", "My Hero Academia", "Bungo Stray Dogs", "Joker Game", "Hundred", "Food Wars!", 'Mob Psycho 100", "Nanatsu no Taizai", "Alderamin on the Sky", "D.Gray-man Hallow", "Drifters", "Keijo!!!!!!!!", "Brave Witches", "Musaigen no Phantom World", "Koukaku no Pandora", 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure", "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress", "Ace Attorney", "Natsume's Book of Friends", etc... all in the same year. for a very slow paced Isekai themed, almost mundane like story, it got lost in the mix...

The Anime series might have done better if they could have tried to make the series a bit longer and adopted more of the source material. But over all I have read before that the Blu-ray/DVD sales were extremely weak in Japan and almost non-existent in the West due to piracy.

Even if they made another season, I doubt it would be the same because the watercolor-style backgrounds were done by Atelier BWCA. The studio closed shit down in 2017 due to the director’s illness.

Shitty physical sales, stronger competition, lost art resources, and a self-contained first season all combined that keep "Grimgar" from really ever getting a Season 2 in my opinion.

I was great? Yes. But I don't seem how something that adapts like 1/20 of the story would leave a mark on the industry, it's unfinished AF. I'm reading the LN and it's even better, but well, a LN getting full adaptation almost never happens, and this is one of those cases.

It's an anime to promote a story, and I think that it really does it's mission.

One of the best Isekai's imo. I guess it just depends on the tastes.

Actually dropped it first episode when it released in 2016. I didn't liked the art since it looked like a generic-isekai. I gave it another go around 2020 and never was I more wrong in my life.

Story was excellent, they could die at any moment, fights had more meaning (actual use of tactics and teamwork), with memorable characters.

It's not talked as much because it ended abruptly with only 12 episodes, and as someone said, it's not a flashy "one man army" like most of the Isekai today. They had to rely on teamwork all the time.

@krautnelson beauty isn't strictly bound to appearances, which I am only assuming OP meant by the use.

@Stanis150 super standard isekai's don't have the characters forget their pasts (rarely is this the case), or delve into characters thoughts and emotion like this did, I feel sorry you only sense the surface.

@Old_Greggu Yes, that's right, that's what I included in the term "more realistic", but in general it's just a nuance. Every isekai has some nuance or feature. By super standard I meant the worldbuilding in anime and its general plot structure and characters design.

Maybe this emotional part is enough to stand out from other isekai, but definitely not from the anime as a whole.
