THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Looks like a beach theme episode. Funny.

I liked how they put a lot of details into the ayakashi this episode to make it look more menacing. And not only that, the episode also gives a good amount of details to Tora's struggle in a way as he takes on a worthy enemy.

I kinda felt bad for that Tatsuya kid.
However, I'm glad to see Asako protect him even though she herself is scared. Loved the way her selflessness is portrayed in this episode

Man this episode was over the top amazing..
So he mom is alive after all, Wonder if we will see her next episode..

Also Tora is so damn cool and how they used both the thunder and spear to kill the sea beast was pretty epic..And one more thing does this mean both girls now know about his second life (well asako(I mean best girl) doesn't fully believe at the moment).

So is it safe to assume that each episode will be episodic or are we finally getting into a flow of things?

5/5 I think this is my biggest shock of this season, it's so damn good (Love the ending music)

Best girl Asako's episode. So much better after I finished the manga last week, given that I can appreciate those little bits of foreshadowing now.

Anyways - pretty faithful again, even though they squeezed 6 chapters into an episode. Some little things were changed, but those were unimportant. Things really start going next week in terms of plot development, too. I expect that the next two episodes will follow the manga, and then they're going to cut out the first bits in three episodes.

Cut what? You mean going anime-original?

Haha, no need to worry - they aren't going anime original. Though since the manga has 313 chapters and the anime will only have 39 episodes, they can't adapt everything, so they are cutting those chapters out that aren't too important to the mainstory.

This show is getting better and better. And we are not even in the middle of the story.

Oh, pitiful shadow cloaked in darkness.

I think this is the 1st time Tora asked for Ushio's help.
I like how their relationship improves each episode.

Ushio's backstory was sad. But it appears his Mom is still alive after all.
Interesting revelation. I wonder what kind of person she'll turn out to be.

It was paced very fast compared to the manga, even if the stuff that was changed / cut wasn't very important. It felt like lightning compared to how long I read this fight.

It actually feels very mixed to me since I didn't like this fight anyways but I also dislike cutting stuff out. Oh well, they said they were going to cut out entire fights later anyways, so I guess I'll have to get used to that.

Man that kid was a huge brat lol....Thankfully Ushio and Ayako were able to get him to calm down

Finding out about Ushio's mom was really sad though but with this new info about her being alive, things are a lot more happier now however it seems as if she's supernatural somehow and could be a badass too =o

Good episode overall, the monster this week was pretty tough too but thanks to the teamwork of our duo (Which was badass btw) it got REKT

that was amusing, I pretty much appreciate Nakamura a lot, she's so cute and tough at the same time, she cares a lot for Ushio to *Shipping* and this episode especially was cute, I like how she took care of the child, and how through his behavior we got to know more about Ushio.

The action in this episode was pretty good and we learned a little bit about Ushio's mom and how she's actually alive.

The plot seems to be getting more interesting.....

I respectfully disagree. After the episode, I skimmed through the chapters that this arc covered, and while I agree some stuff was left out, it was well done. The only thing I dislike that was left out were some of the scenes that involved Asako's grandpa and Tora venturing through the Ayakashi. Other than that, I'm impressed with what Mappa did here and also in the last couple of episodes.

Ushio and Tora. The relation between them grows every episode and I like it!

Best episode so far!
Based Mappa giving us another good anime! They were the creators of Madhouse afterall :P
Hope to see more good quality from them.

So Tora is a well known youkai. And that old dude wants him to beat that huge ass monster.
Tora couldn't defeat him and gets eaten so he calls for Ushio.

But Tora isn't the only one who gets eaten, Tatsuya and Asako were eaten too.
Tora protecting them from the monsters true form.

Ushio comes in for the help. The Beast Spear gets his own will after Ushio takes the red scarf off it.
The spear kills of the Ayakashi. Ushio is grateful to Tora and cries T-T

Old dude comes back and tells them about Ushio's mother.
So Ushio's mother is a villian. Interesting plot point!

6/5!

I'm more amazed that Ushio only has girls for friends and just hangs out with them like it's normal. Ignoring the harem ones, I find that kind of weird for shonen action. Yeah, I know it was written in the 90s, but how do you explain the cell phones and flat-screen TVs, huh?

Anyways, whilst this episode definitely did not suck and was good by beach episode standards, it felt a little too throwaway for my taste. Not much development aside from introducing some new plot directions, which I've never considered substance, and the monster of the week story wasn't that interesting this time.

The mangaka is involved with this adaptation and reportedly approves of the changes that have been made. In the original manga, Tatsuya had a radio transceiver rather than a toy phone as a keepsake of his mother, and that was how Asako contacted Ushio. They've updated it to appear to be contemporary, while maintaining the look of 90's manga art. As to his close relationship with the girls, remember that Asako's family took him in and took care of him while his father was mysteriously absent for long stretches of time, while Mayuko already seems to be connected to events by the actions of a previous incarnation.

This is not episodic. You'll find that most of the characters that were introduced in earlier episodes will reappear to play a role in the unfolding storyline--sometimes a vital role. Embedded in the earlier chapters and episodes are bits of information that assume much greater importance later on when we understand just what is going on (for example why Ushio's father seems to be absent a lot of the time). And with the revelation that his mother is alive, and is hated by the youkai, we actually have started on that main plot.
