Freezing

Decades into the future, humanity is under siege by an alien race known as the Novas. These inhuman beings leave devastation in their wake whenever they appear, with the efforts to stave them off becoming known as Nova Clashes. Young women known as "Pandoras" and young men known as "Limiters" are implanted with stigmata to give them superhuman powers and are trained in military academies, where they must learn to work together if humanity is to have a chance of surviving.

Freezing tells the story of Kazuya Aoi as he sets out for his first day at the West Genetics military academy, right when a battle royale is being undertaken by the Pandoras. It is here that he mistakes Satellizer el Bridget—a powerful Pandora known as the "Untouchable Queen"—as his deceased sister and embraces her. Though he costs her the match, she finds that his touch doesn't drive her away and decides to take him as her Limiter. The only question is whether or not their partnership can survive the machinations of their upperclassmen and the impending battle with the Novas…

Freezing! is, objectively, a really fucking bad show. I am going to start my review by stating this upfront, because I do not want any readers misinterpreting this review. Freezing! is NOT good. The plot sucks and barely makes coherent sense, the MC and FMC are both dense and inconsistent as characters, the main threat (Nova) of the entire series are sidelined so chicks can fight each other and any form of storytelling or in depth character development is replaced with a one off backstory or some form of sexual abuse and/or rape powerup scene.

So why, you might wonder, have I given it such a ... high rating? Simple; Freezing's intense lack of respect for both its narrative and characters allow it to do the dumbest, most stupid balls to the wall ecchi shit imaginable. For comparison, in High School DXD, often lauded as the pinnacle of the ecchi harem fight series, there is about 1 titty shot per episode, maybe more, just a rough estimate. Freezing, however, does not concern itself with holding back on the ecchi. There is at minimum 10-15 titties per EPISODE!!! And it's not just random shower scenes or lucky pervert scenes, though of course we get plenty of that. But what really makes this ecchi work is how it combines with the power system.

See, these girls can't die. I'm not gonna lie, the plot doesn't really make sense as to why they can't die, it has something to do with pandoras and satalizers and something something holes in back, but basically they regenerate organs, limbs etc during fights. THIS means that we get to see these girls battle to the "death" without actually dying, which is cool in it's own way, but what exemplifies this is that during the fights the characters get magical weapons that ALWAYS strip at least one part of a characters outfit (There isn't a fight scene in the show that doesn't have nudity), therefore showing off the variety of beautiful tits that this show has within. Speaking of, the tits in this show may very well be the most beautiful, well shapen, fluffy and tout breasts I have ever seen in a non hentai anime. The animation especially showcases these assets, with both excellent jiggle physics along with consistency with animating the nude tits mid battle. Honestly, for what is essentially a hentai the animators popped off for both fights and boobie animations... So to the animators you have my A+ respect. Also the music fucking SLAPS

Now, having gotten this far into the review, the well minded person may be wondering: "But RobinLopez, aren't you just talking about the tits? For such a good rating, you sure are shallow!" And, yes, I am normally the type to admonish a fanservice show that simply banks on pure titty fun times. I despise many of the popular ecchi due to this, but where Freezing! differs is that it doesn't hold back on the hentai elements like your To Love Ru or Date a Live. It knows what it is, embraces it, and has a damn good time doing it. Maybe a guilty pleasure, but any fellow gooner rejects out there, I implore you to at least give Freezing! a watch, if for nothing but bewbs

Mixed Feelings

“Freezing” (Winter 2011, 12 episodes) is the kind of anime that knocks on your door without a mask: cover art, trailer, opening minutes — everything screams that the priority here is ecchi, complete with clothes that rip telepathically. Are there fights? Yes. A plot? Technically — but it’s always politely asking permission from the fanservice before showing up.

The universe flirts with the Evangelion-school aesthetic: angels, pompous terminology, a thin coat of Western religious symbolism to give weight to a story that actually prefers the weight... of falling clothes. The stigma-based power system even winks at you: the protagonist has a special connection to it, the ... girls receive stigmas at the academy, and that’s about it. The internal logic never gets the spotlight; it’s lore for the display case, not for the shelf.

P.S. Adaptation note: I haven’t read the manga, so I don’t have my own ruler for measuring faithfulness. From the chatter I’ve seen here and there, the adaptation seems “fine” — no brutal distortions. To ruin a manga, an anime would have to turn the plot upside down, and that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The romance follows the textbook slow-burn: the main couple takes three steps forward, two steps back, and sighs nine times in between. It works as emotional glue for those buying into the fantasy; for anyone seeking consistency, it’s just another reminder that the show is selling something else. The animation is decent for its time — a few cool cuts, nothing offensive to the retina, that “old-school” vibe that ages reasonably well when ambition stays modest.

Rewatching it today, the impression is crystal clear: Freezing doesn’t promise complexity — and keeps its word. In four hours, it delivers basic action, sluggish romance, and fanservice with conviction. If you’re after thematic depth, coherent power systems, and solid worldbuilding, there are better shelves to browse. But if what you want is to turn off your brain and watch some spicy brawls, the dish arrives hot.

Verdict: 5/10. Could rise to a 6 on a generous day, but the series barely tries to explain its own toolbox. Still, it doesn’t really cheat: from the very first second, Freezing tells you exactly what it’s here for — and delivers just that, no frills.

Well, from where should I start? The premise of this anime was very interesting at the beginner, the story itself is interesting with all the plot about the warrior girls and their supports, but the way that it was written... It's just a lot of nonsense. Episode after episode the same story tends to be replayed, a group of girls that doesn't like other girl are introduced all of a sudden and plans to take the shit out of some solo girl that are, we see, a bit annoying at least. They should be training to combat enemies in common but ... noooo, they spend their time fighting each other for some stupid reason. Almost every episode is like this. The story development? Who needs this shit??? Let's just add some random girl fighting with almost no clothes on in every episode and that's fine.
This is an ecchi anime so, i am not bothered by the ecchi itself but the absence of the story development. The MC is very uninteresting and seems to be impulsive, doing stupid things without stop to think a little, but when it's time to do something, time to move his body, he does nothing, just stands there, looking. I'm very disappointed with this anime because I really think that the story has a lot of potential and good characters, but the poor written fucked up everything. I hop the manga is better, I plan to read it to confirm, in the future.
