Kimi ni Todoke

Known for her semblance to the Sadako character of The Ring series, Sawako Kuronuma is given the nickname "Sadako" and misunderstood to be frightening and malicious like her fictional counterpart, despite having a timid and sweet nature. Longing to make friends and live a normal life, Sawako is naturally drawn to the cheerful and friendly Shouta Kazehaya, the most popular boy in her class. From their first meeting, Sawako has admired Kazehaya's ability to be the center of attention and aspires to be like him.

When Kazehaya organizes a test of courage for the entire class and encourages her to attend, Sawako sees this as an opportunity to get along with her classmates, starting with Ayane Yano and Chizuru Yoshida. Through each new encounter and emotion she experiences, Sawako believes that meeting Kazehaya has changed her for the better. Little does Sawako know, her presence has also changed Kazehaya.

This anime is perfect if you are looking for a light and relaxing show with a touch of high school romance. The story centers on Sawako, a girl who has been avoided by others since childhood, and Kazehaya, one of the most popular students at their school. The combination of these two characters may feel quite mainstream, but it still works as an enjoyable formula.

Personally, I enjoy anime with a slower pace like this. The relationships develop gradually, allowing the story to build emotional depth over time. Beyond the romance between the main characters, the presence of their friends also adds a dimension of friendship ... that feels very characteristic of high school life.

There are a few scenes that stayed with me. One of them is when Sawako falls asleep on the stairs and Kazehaya quietly sits beside her. But my favorite scene is when the classroom seating arrangement is shuffled and no one wants to sit near Sawako. Then, one by one, her friends ignore the assigned seats and choose to sit close to her anyway. That moment feels incredibly sweet, warm, and sincere—something that captures the genuine kindness often found in teenage friendships.

Another thing I find interesting is the title of the anime itself. It is simple, yet meaningful: “Reaching You,” or perhaps “From Me to You.” Such a simple phrase, yet filled with sincerity. I can relate to it in many situations, because expressing our feelings to someone is not always easy. There are always things that can lead to misunderstandings. But that does not mean we should drown in fear and end up never expressing those warm feelings at all.

Ah, if only my high school romance could be as sweet as it is in this anime, haha. Still, I remain grateful for the experiences I had.

Mixed Feelings

Kimi ni Todoke is basically Komi Can't Communicate if Komi was ostracized and bullied her entire life by rumours she's a supernatural entity, before a bland puddle deep pixie male lead allows her to grow & be her true self. A true self that's an oblivious sweetheart who's actually incredible at everything outside of social interactions & the heart; despite being socially inept, bullied & degraded her entire life outside of her home.

She can either be fun, sweet & unaware or frustrating & unbearable based on the frequency of her tropes & character traits in conjunction with the current arc. She can also latch onto ... you connecting to your doubts & mentality, it's all up to the viewer's life experience.

As for the love interest, he's your average pixie that lifts the depressed & loner lead into the light. He has the entire school attracted to him but lacks any character or depth beyond "I'm actually selfish" or, from the female lead's perspective "he helped me & I'm so grateful for him" in spite of multiple episodes that try to explore her love deeper.

Her friends are great, Chizuru (tomboy) & (Ayane)Gyaru. They come in loud but improve the show tenfold as Kazehaya & Sawako's interactions lack substance during prolonged sequences. The interactions between the three girls and the occasional Ryuu were the highlights of the show. Despite the tone shift, the rumours arc (while exaggerated) did a great job at exploring new friendships & the associated communication barrier if the person has fractured thinking.

All that being said I don't think Kimi Ni Todoke is an incredible romance anime as in 25 episodes there is very little "earned" romance, lots of drama, stupidity, denseness & pace shifts. That being said it's captivating and kept me watching to the completion of season one.

From me to You has everything that can make or break a romance anime.

Long drawn out realisations & romance, empty of a confession or conclusion to any first season relationships.

Arcs that showcase, improve or solve character traits but ultimately lead nowhere in 24 episodes (episode: rumours)

Great initial episodes that devolve with a Drama Arc followed by slice of life internal series tropes (blushing, exaggeration, crying (lots), chibis, ignorance & density.) & awkward side character focus.

Slow character growth that's reserved for individual arcs rather than consistent episode-episode improvement.

Age Gap Infatuation, loving parents & interconnected family relations.

Frustrating interactions between the class & teacher through rumours & adolescent actions.

Drama, Backstabbing, Heartbreak & Rivals.

More than one note side characters that have their own arcs & romance that are more interesting than the main duo. Man of few Words, Gyaru & Tomboy with hearts of Gold.

Mid-season recap episode that ruins the flow of the show.

I really don't understand the hype for this show. It's currently rated at an 8.05 on here and I'm so confused.

I get it was 2009, but the art style is very classic shoujo and dated. The cutesy moments are okay enough, but they get grading after a time because sawako is the most bland carbon copy female protagonist of all time. In general, I think I'm just tired of this type of show. So if you're still pretty new to romance anime and are going through the old ones first, you might enjoy it more.

The main guy is pretty chill, although I forget his name ... which is kind of a problem considering how much Sawako says it. He's just kind of there though. He has enough charm because as male protagonists go he's fairly normal. In a genre filled with either a shoujo MC who's a cliche nervous wreck, or a MC who's ridiculously perfect in a cringey way, this guy was pretty chill. There just isn't that much to him at all. He's just there.

Ryu was interesting. Him and Chii and the other girl were the only reason I got this far through the show. Ryu and Chiis dynamic, although pretty played out, was much more interesting then anything to do with the main girl. But their plot lines didn't really go anywhere either.

There's a lot of typical 2000s romance anime drama in here, the shit you've seen a million times before, the timid MC crying over every misunderstanding under the sun. I think it's the fact that anime has got a little more realistic in terms of relationships and character dynamics nowadays, and the ones that aren't that come out now are the ones I don't enjoy as much.

Dandadan and blue box are great examples of great modern romance, where there's internal drama but it's done in a grounded, realistic way. Even the losing heroine show that came out last season had that.

Again, if this was like 5 years ago, I mightve enjoyed this show. It's similar to the maid sama era, a show I had fond memories on but rewatched a few years ago and struggled to get through it.

Times have changed I guess.

The art is pleasant enough, the soundtrack is mid af but fits the show well enough, the OP is pretty decent, I skipped the ending, and the voice acting is okay. I think the VAs were well cast and well performed (I watched the sub), its more that Sawako as a character is so annoying so her voice needs to accommodate for that soft "cute" style of voice. But yeah, that's just another thing I'm sick of.

If you're bored of timid main characters and shows that move at a snails pace and never feel like they resolve, don't watch this.
