Rekishi ni Nokoru Akujo ni Naru zo

The kind and compassionate heroine of an otome game may be as flawless as she is admirable, but a certain young woman from Japan much prefers the villainess, Alicia Williams. She sees sense in Alicia's ruthless verbal abuse and values her discipline and fortitude. On the other hand, aside from always toying with Prince Duke Seeker's emotions, the commoner heroine seems to only spout lip service.

Given the choice, the young woman would love to be reincarnated as Alicia—and her wish suddenly comes true! Seven-year-old Alicia awakens with the memories of her past life, now aware of all the future events, outcomes, and the world's secrets. I think that in a market where there is a bit of an oversaturation of "otome player reincarnated as villain with bad fate but resists yet doesn't ever realize they have escaped being a villainess", this anime is such a breath of fresh air, especially Alicia as a character. Instead of avoiding being a villainess, she actively strives towards it. By no means is it the holy grail of anime, but it was very enjoyable and the plot was more interesting than i would have thought. Altogether, i think it's worth a try even if you're burned out on otome game villainess reincarnations.

Mixed Feelings

Truly a good “Villainess” isekai, where she actually wants to be a villain, that already makes it a little unique. They even critique the plot armor and naivety of the usual otome protagonist. Story is funny, with cute characters, plot twists, character growth and if you don’t think too much about the ages it can be a cute romance.

It is very novel-like that we can see some episodes where they are growing up, the time skips feel earned and everything progress quickly, its a good storytelling. Instead of flashbacks we can see the protagonist actually grow up.

Too bad the art is inconsistent and you can ... tell they it has a low budget or were rushed, if you enjoy otome isekai this is a breath of fresh air. Hope they make a S2!

The only reason to watch this series is if you have some certain attachment to reincarnating into Otome games as the villainess or Himederes when they laugh. I happen to have such a condition, so this review will be rating it in comparison to series of the same nature. If you do not care for this genre there is no reason to watch it. The "RealPolitik" present functions better in Tanya, LoGH, or Code Geass. Medieval fantasy with haughty women trying to teach you moral lessons/political ones are better in spice and wolf. And if you purely want Otome Villainesses then watch Lvl99 villainess (atleast ... then you'll get a satisfying ending) or read "Chounin A wa Akuyaku Reijou wo Doushitemo Sukuitai"

WHY DOES IT FAIL: What successfully drives these types of shows is an overarching plot that culminates at the end of the dating game. Afterall the point of the series is to mimic a dating game. Rekishi ni Nokuro however has no such plot or urgency. We are told the saint is going to save the kingdom, but there is no demon king to threaten it or politics to keep her away (aside from some last minute cliff hanger.) All we get is the resurrection of a penal colony, however this is given such little screen time and little urgency that only upon multi year time skips does the viewer question what has become of it which the answer is always "its a little better now"

I only care for these types of series for the machiavellian girls. The only issue is Alicia barely registers as one. Yes she does go against the crowd in a better to be feared than loved method, but that comes in these battle of witts moments where she is attacked or accused and must find a way to orient herself as the villian. These moments have individual faults, but their greatest weakness is Alicia has no goal. If she were like lvl99 then she'd be about powerleveling and keeping the saint in check to beat the end boss. If it was Tanya it would be about surviving and establishing the glory of Austrian economics upon the kaiserreich. Instead our villianess only has this self proclaimed vague goal to "watch the saint." What this does for the actual diatribes in the story is it forces the author to come up with these contrived arguements where some girl starts drama with alicia, but alicia cant outright prove them wrong because that would make her not villianess, so she must wait for someone to dues ex machina a third voice that lets her escape with her pride intact. There are some good moments in the series, but the best of these either happe earlier or they lead to the main girl and everyone else cutting their hair and ruining the himedere look.
