Benriya Saitou-san, Isekai ni Iku

Despite being a handyman with a wide range of skills, Saitou is severely undervalued and underpaid. When he complains, his boss fires him, claiming that he is easily replaceable. As if his luck was not bad enough, Saitou soon finds himself about to be run over by a truck on his way home.

Surprisingly enough, Saitou does not die; instead, he is transported to another world. There, he meets a party composed of the female knight Raelza, the moonlight fairy Lafanpan, and the mage Morlock, who are all coincidentally looking to recruit a new member with a skill set like Saitou's.

Throughout their time together, Saitou uses his expertise to assist his fellow party members and soon comes to receive the recognition he never thought was possible. However, Saitou's presence may just be the catalyst that will connect a diverse cast of people from different places, slowly uncovering the fate that could bring a great change to this world.

Very enjoyable when it's not trying too hard to be dramatic.

We follow a loveable jack-of-all-trades with no particular combat ability who has been isekai'd into a world of sword and sorcery. His appraisal, lockpicking, and repair skills end up making him popular with the townspeople and invaluable to his party as their thief/rogue. Handyman Saito satirizes its genre's tropes almost as well as that other, more famous isekai send-up we're all familiar with. At one point Saito learns about how this show's wonderful world is changing due to an increasing number of women in the workplace, stagnant wages for adventurers, and greater life expectancy putting ... strain on caregivers.

We start out getting these seemingly disjointed sketches that introduce us to the main protagonists, the other adventuring parties, and the villains. These eventually converge into a larger narrative. I found this unique for anime and not necessarily bad. It's enough for a slice-of-life comedy, but sadly not enough to lend adequate emotional weight to the two arcs with two tragic villains (a ninja and a demon dog) that it tries to deliver. The show is at its best when it's not trying too hard to be dramatic. I'd have liked Lafanpan's story and more interaction with the side characters instead of having those last battles drag on so long.

Definitely recommend watching if you like comedy and slice of life in fantasy worlds, and if you're not expecting the standard isekai format with an edgy "aura farming" protagonist and his harem.

Mixed Feelings

The leading opinion appears to be that this anime has a slow start, then picks up at the end. I actually feel the opposite way. Essentially, this anime starts out as a mostly episodic, fragmented, character comedy, along the lines of Saiki K. As the episodes progress, an overarching plot develops and becomes the main focus, with the comedy of the character interactions fading more into the background. I really like the character comedy parts; while the cast is nothing super special, their interactions always lead to interesting moments, and the fragmented format ensures the jokes don't overstay their welcome. But the overarching plot that ... later develops feels more like any other isekai story. It feels a bit forced, as if the conventions of the isekai genre made it obligatory to include such a plot. It's not bad and it does build upon the earlier parts. Like many other isekai, though, it doesn't get as much mileage out of its premise as it could.

From a technical perspective, this anime is well done, but nothing special visually and musically. Overall, if you think you might like both parts of this anime, I would definitely recommend it. If you feel like you might primarily like one part rather than the other (maybe the character comedy parts, like me, or the overarching plot, like others), it might still be worth it, but I can't recommend it unconditionally.

I think this is getting such high scores based on the last 4 episodes.

This series starts off disjointed, with horrible pacing, bad character introductions, no setup, and essentially a hot mess.
It continues this way for the first 6 episodes. Then you get 2 "not quite as bad" episodes, by this point you sort of know who everyone-everywhere is but a lot of them you just don't give a damn about. Then the last 4 episodes are actually decent. Probably worth a 7.5 rating. But it isn't worth sitting through 8 episodes of hot mess to get there.

The ... animation itself is fine, there's no problem there, and the opening and ending music is generic but there's no problem with it, nothing that would detract from the show. (Not that I really note the credit sequences and music as part of the rating for a show, more as a side-note if they're really good and worth paying attention too).

I get the feeling that whoever was adapting this for animation story was dropped in at the deep end, or else they just slavishly copied a manga that allowed more exposition or a different style. Whatever they did it doesn't work as episodic anime.

For me I advise a hard pass, if you're a mature person watching this. Your 12-13 year olds might like it if they're just looking for some occasional cheap laughs and 2-dimensional characters with bright colours.
