Kami no Tou

There is a tower that summons chosen people called "Regulars" with the promise of granting their deepest desires. Whether it be wealth, fame, authority, or something that surpasses them all—everything awaits those who reach the top.

Twenty-Fifth Bam is a boy who had only known a dark cave, a dirty cloth, and an unreachable light his entire life. So when a girl named Rachel came to him through the light, his entire world changed. Becoming close friends with Rachel, he learned various things about the outside world from her. But when Rachel says she must leave him to climb the Tower, his world shatters around him. Vowing to follow after her no matter what it takes, he sets his sight on the tower, and a miracle occurs.

Thus begins the journey of Bam, a young boy who was not chosen by the Tower but opened its gates by himself. They call his kind "Irregulars"—beings that have shaken the very foundation of the Tower each time they set foot inside it.

Very Good anime. I recently come across the Season 2 and started watching that but I forgot the season 1 so I had to rewatch first and as same as usual, I still fucking hate rachel. I like the Kami no Tou universe because the power scaling and plot is a mystery to me, there's a certain complexity which seems just right. Rewatching this was not a waster of time because it serves as a recap. Although the fight scenes are not that amazing, it is still a good start of story. Anyway, just watch this anime, I just finished season 1 and 2, ... off to go watch the Workshop Battle.

Mixed Feelings

If you're gonna watch Tower of God, watch the dub.

If you're quickly skimming reviews and only take one thing from mine let it be that. My God, watch the dub. Tower of God has one of the best dubs I've had the joy of listening to since Mob Psycho 100, and the OG singer even does the OP in English to boot! Almost every actor provides an absolutely stellar performance here. But I digress:

Tower of God is a great example of how good directing and characters can elevate otherwise mediocre storytelling. It's a show that kept me invested enough to finish it with a ... 7/10, but also a show that makes me look at director Takashi Sano and think "God, imagine if they let him direct a REALLY GOOD story next. It'd be fantastic." The pacing, sound, art design, and animation on this series are all superb and uniquely cinematic in a way not quite like anything else in anime without feeling like they're trying too hard to appeal to the US audience producer Crunchyroll was gunning for with this and other pieces in their "Crunchyroll Originals" line.

Unfortunately, none of this exciting risk-taking by Telecom is enough to hide that S.I.U. knows how to write some wonderful characters but not what to do with them, which is particularly frustrating because like... Tower of God is just a long tournament arc. All you need to do to make a good tournament arc on paper is take a bunch of interesting characters and make them fight each other, but the writing in this show managed to impress me with the ways it broke what should be one of the easiest recipes in anime in two ways:

1. It convolutes the concept in ways that keep the characters' unique personalities and skills from shining in several fights and make the requirements for winning so wishy-washy that it feels like results are often random. In the second half of the anime there's a particularly egregious example: each character is given a specific "role" they have to play in an upcoming team event, but these roles have less to do with any actual rules and more about the styles the players should be utilizing. These rules mean that instead of us getting to see how each character would handle a task in their own way, each character gets shoved into a box and told how they're supposed to act. The resulting match ends up being fairly boring because of this and because so much time is spent explaining game rules that don't end up mattering all that much and don't really make sense.

2. Bam, the protagonist we're supposed to be rooting for to win this thing and climb the Tower, is the weakest character in the series by far and could easily be replaced with a sexy lamp. If MAL reviews allowed pictures this is where I would put several screenshots of Bam standing around doing nothing, because that's all he does in most situations. He just watches cool stuff happen around him, but he's special because reasons, so everyone around him makes sure he succeeds. Is the idea that the audience is supposed to be able to graft themselves onto him? There's a way to write a protagonist as a plot device that moves others, but this isn't it.

Tower of God has a lot going for it thanks to some stellar directing and character writing, but the desire to feel "more intelligent" than other tournament arcs by adding rules that don't really matter/are hard to follow and the need for Bam to be special and liked without really doing anything to earn it undermines it at every turn. I left the series just not caring about Bam or his journey and even sympathizing more with the few characters not under his spell who were bitter about his unearned special-ness. If I decide to return for another season, it will be in SPITE of Bam, not because of him.

The show starts strong but loses track. It turns out to be a total non-sense.

The anime has engaging fight scenes and enjoyable mysteries till half of the season. Then suddenly the world goes into a disarray. There is no proper sense in why any character does anything. Even they reflect contradictions quite often, a good guy and then suddenly a bad guy, again good finally. The protagonist is praised by all, though I find no apparent reason. I think no one will whole heartedly enjoy the show.

The story has close resemblance to a setup of video games about quests. The art style is ... so-so. The characters behave inconsistently.
