Synopsis

Kouhei Araki, a veteran editor of the dictionary editorial division at Genbu Publishing, plans to retire in order to better care for his ailing wife. However, before retiring, he must find a replacement to complete his latest project: a new dictionary called The Great Passage. But no matter where he looks, he cannot find anyone suitable, as making a dictionary requires a wealth of patience, time, and dedication.

Mitsuya Majime works in Genbu Publishing's sales division, yet he has poor social skills and an inability to read the mood in most situations. In spite of this, he excels at having an enthusiasm for words thanks to his love of reading and careful personality. It is these skills that draw Araki to him and prompt him to offer Majime a position in the dictionary editorial department. As Majime accepts his new position, he finds himself unsure of his abilities and questioning whether he will fit in with his new co-workers. Yet amid the vast sea of words, The Great Passage will bring them together.

Majime is a calculated man with his words, but his expression is explored within this slow, but captivating series. Araki and Matsumoto alongside Nishioka and Sasaki decide to embark on a long project to write an expansive dictionary called Daitokai. The word means a sea of Words.

It's basically a workplace based anime about the importance of grammar and small details in which definitions can expand based on the reader and/or writer. Araki is the stern mentor, whilst the Matsumoto is the experienced supervisor. Sasaki and Nishioka are supporting this team and guiding Majime understand how to use words better. Araki lives up to the ...

Mixed Feelings
Very memorable to this day...

I don't know how to explain this but... Watching someone's entire life within 11 episodes really made me feel a certain way that I can't explain.

> Do you think others will enjoy/dislike this series, even if you didn't? Why?

This show is definitely not something that you are sure to enjoy but if you are aimless, directionless and purposeless like I was when I watched this, maybe you will like this.

Sorry for this rambling of a review but I really just needed to get this out of me.

> Is the story unique? If it was predictable, did you enjoy it anyway ...

(Greetings from Portugal !) (overall Fune wo Amu! 4/10)

“Yet amid the vast sea of words, The Great Passage will bring them together.”

Oh the Great Passage! How I wish you were great. I was expecting a great story with well-built characters. The premise was so seductive – How to complete a dictionary? A show about books, but not just books, the ultimate compendium of words and meanings! And the Gods know, how we all struggle with words and communication. You can never be 100% of the true meaning of my words. That is fascinating, for me. We invented language, only to misunderstand ourselves and others. It’s ...

The Art of Time Skips: When, How and Why

The Art of Time Skips: When, How and Why

With flashbacks, plot twists and foreshadowing often being the most analyzed narrative elements in anime, time skips get ignored quite often. However, they offer just as much potential, for better or for worse.

The Fall 2016 Anime Season Has Some Actually Good LN Adaptations!

Light Novel adaptations have had something of a poor reputation over the past couple of years in anime. For every actually good one, there are 5-6 terrible highschool harems led by Yuji Everylead the Bland. But this upcoming Fall 2016 anime season looks like it might be the exception....maybe?
