Plastic Memories

Eighteen-year-old Tsukasa Mizugaki has failed his college entrance exams, but after pulling some strings, he manages to land a job at the Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. SAI Corp is responsible for the creation of "Giftias"—highly advanced androids which are almost indiscernible from normal humans. However, unlike humans, Giftias have a maximum lifespan of 81,920 hours, or around nine years and four months. Terminal Service One, the station Tsukasa was assigned to, is responsible for collecting Giftias that have met their expiration date, before they lose their memories and become hostile.

Promptly after joining Terminal Service One, Tsukasa is partnered with a beautiful Giftia named Isla. She is a Terminal Service veteran and considered the best in Giftia retrievals, contrary to her petite figure and placid nature. Time is fleeting though, and Tsukasa must come to terms with his feelings for Isla before her time is up. No matter how much someone desires it, nothing lasts forever.

This is easily the best romance anime I've seen so far.

Around a year ago or so, the time I found out about this anime, I thought that: "I really want to watch romance, this anime will def be enjoyable". At the first episode, I thought it was bad, I dropped it immediately cause I thought it was.. pretty weird. Oh how erroneous.. I was DEAD WRONG.

On a random holiday, around today, the urge to watch a romance anime came back to me again. Not knowing what to watch, I've decided to give this anime another chance by fully watching the first episode. "It wasn't that ... bad?" I thought.

Until then.. I never thought that every episode of this anime would drag out tears from my eyes.. especially episode 10-13.
Every episode IS a masterpiece, the clear stoyline, how the background story was presented, the supporting characters..

This anime reminds us clearly how memories should be seen as a gift in our lifes, something beautiful, meaningful
that we should continue keeping as a memorial from something or someone we cherish. The anime throws us some questions, like about how memories shouldn't be made in the first place or not, since the more lovely it is, the more you get hurt when you let go. It is answered somewhere in the anime later on.

The last episode was also really satisfying to watch.. going places to places that they've already went to in momerable places they went to. That ending tho.. when Tsukasa finally opened himself for Isla.. it was nice for the mc to finally able to show his weak side to his lover after holding back for a long time after what they've been through the whole time. It should be a relief for Isla.

There's just so much more I want to say.. but of course, no one can put or describe all their feelings into symbols that we ourselves need to create in order to understand each other.

Overall.. I hope this anime gets more and more attention in the future, even if they might dehydrate the watcher's eyes.

Plastic Memories centers on a romance story shaped by the inevitability of loss. The narrative blends science fiction with everyday human relationships using the concept of artificial beings to explore a deeply emotional question: how meaningful can love become when both people already know that the ending cannot be avoided. The story takes place in a near future where advanced androids known as "Giftia" live alongside humans. Giftia possess humanlike appearance, emotions, and memories. Despite their realism, every Giftia carries a strict operational limit. After approximately 9 years and 4 months, memory stability collapses and personality deterioration begins. Once that limit passes, the android risks ... becoming a dangerous being known as "Wanderer." Because of its limitation, a special organization is responsible for retrieving Giftia before that point arrives. The narrative follows Tsukasa Mizugaki, a young man who joins the Terminal Service department of the company that produces Giftia. The job involves visiting households where android partners must be collected before memory failure occurs. Retrieval operations often become emotionally painful encounters. Owners must say farewell to companions who have lived with them as friends, family members, or romantic partners. The work therefore revolves less around technology and more around helping people confront inevitable separation. Tsukasa is assigned to work with Isla, a female Giftia who has already served the company for many years. Isla once carried a reputation as one of the most capable retrieval specialists, yet declining emotional stability has slowly reduced confidence and efficiency. The partnership between Tsukasa and Isla begins with awkward distance. Tsukasa struggles to understand the emotional weight of the job, whilst Isla maintains a polite but reserved attitude toward her new partner.

As their work continues, the story gradually reveals the emotional burden carried by both characters. Retrieval missions frequently expose Tsukasa to families experiencing grief, denial, or anger as the expiration of their Giftia approaches. These encounters shape Tsukasa’s growing understanding of attachment and responsibility. Isla, on the other hand, quietly carries knowledge of her own remaining lifespan. The approaching limit of her operational time becomes an unspoken presence throughout the narrative. The central emotional thread develops through the relationship between Tsukasa and Isla. Shared experiences during retrieval missions gradually transform professional partnership into genuine affection. Unlike many romance stories built around uncertainty, this relationship unfolds with the full awareness that separation is guaranteed. The approaching expiration date of Isla’s life becomes the silent countdown that defines every interaction between the two characters. The narrative repeatedly explores how people respond to the knowledge that time together is limited. Some characters refuse to accept reality and delay retrieval as long as possible. Others attempt to preserve memories through photographs or final experiences. Through these encounters, the story presents the idea that the value of a relationship may not depend on its duration, but on the meaning created during the time shared.

Despite the emotional strength of its premise, the story also reveals several narrative limitations. One weakness appears in the structure of the worldbuilding. The concept of Giftia and their operational lifespan introduces a complex technological setting, yet the story rarely explores the broader social implications of artificial beings living among humans. Questions about ethics, production, or long term societal impact remain largely untouched. The narrative chooses to remain focused on personal relationships rather than expanding the larger science fiction framework. Another limitation appears in the predictability of the central conflict. From early in the story, the outcome of the relationship between Tsukasa and Isla becomes emotionally obvious. The approaching expiration date creates a clear trajectory for the narrative, leaving little uncertainty about where the story will eventually lead. While the emotional journey remains touching, the absence of narrative unpredictability reduces tension during the final stages of the story. The supporting cast also receives uneven development. Characters such as Michiru Kinushima, Zack, and Constance contribute personality to the workplace environment, yet several of their emotional arcs receive limited exploration. Certain subplots appear briefly before fading into the background, leaving the impression that deeper character stories were possible but not fully realized.

From a production standpoint, animation by Doga Kobo emphasizes soft visual presentation that complements the melancholic atmosphere of the story. Character animation often relies on gentle facial expressions and subtle body language rather than dramatic motion. This restrained approach supports the quiet tone of many emotional scenes. Color design frequently uses warm lighting and pastel tones that create a calm, almost nostalgic environment. Offices, city streets, and residential spaces appear comfortable and familiar, reinforcing the contrast between ordinary daily life and the quiet tragedy surrounding the limited lifespan of Giftia. Music plays a particularly important role in shaping the emotional atmosphere. Piano driven melodies and soft orchestral arrangements accompany many of the reflective moments throughout the series. The soundtrack reinforces the bittersweet tone of the story, often emphasizing the fragile beauty of temporary relationships. Rather than overwhelming scenes with dramatic intensity, the music gently amplifies the sense of approaching farewell. Overall, Plastic Memories offers a narrative centered on the acceptance of impermanence. Through the relationship between Tsukasa and Isla, the story explores how love can remain meaningful even when both individuals know that time together is limited. While predictable storytelling and underdeveloped worldbuilding prevent the narrative from reaching greater complexity, the sincerity of its emotional core allows the series to resonate as a reflection on memory, attachment, and the courage to cherish moments that cannot last forever.

Anyway, keep in mind that no opinion is ever purely objective, and every perspective remains open to discussion. Even so, each viewpoint still holds its own value. Plastic Memories tries to tell a very serious story in the dumbest way possible, through very anime-esque tropes. Isla is the shy girl, Tsukasa is the very safely played dense protagonist who is polite and gets embarrassed, Michiru is the tsundere, so on and so forth. This usually isn't a problem when you're writing a trashy harem just to sell its porn afterwards. However, it is a problem when you want me to take the story as a very serious drama.

The show TRIES to tug on your heartstrings, but it's not possible to get attached to very cliche tropes. When you want me to be ... invested in a character, I have to see meaningful interactions and their relationship build up. I won't feel involved just because you slapped the main character tag on them and spent 90% of the screen time showing Isla being shy. I can't take the show as seriously as they want me to, especially when all Isla does is "uwu" and all Michiru does is "b-b-baka". The show has to make the characters feel like they matter. It has to show them do stuff, have dialogue, have experiences. It doesn't do much of that.

The two main characters are possibly the worst combo for a viewer experience. A shy girl and a polite, safe protagonist. Two character archetypes that avoid anything happening. Consequently, the romance is them being embarrassed on screen and not doing anything meaningful. I don't recall any meaningful conversations. There's one backstory that they tease the entire show for Isla. That backstory is so mediocre that once you reach its conclusion all you could think is "That's it? That's the crazy story I've been waiting for?"

It also feels like Tsukasa doesn't really feel any stakes. If you told Tsukasa you planted a bomb under his bed that will detonate in 3 days, he will spend 2 days doing his business as usual and then at the last 3 minutes he will panick that a bomb will blow up his bed. Tsukasa somehow feels less invested in his own life than the viewer.

For a romance show, I really did not feel like there was much romance. I can't remember any meaningful interaction between Tsukasa and Isla. Nothing moves their relationship forward. They don't try to move it forward. It feels like even after months of dating, they are still distant coworkers. Isla just goes "uwu Im shy" and Tsukasa says "haha ok I am polite and passive and will do nothing." After 13 episodes, it feels like not much has happened.
