Psycho-Pass 2

A year and a half after the events of the original sci-fi psychological thriller, Akane Tsunemori continues her work as an inspector—enforcing the Sibyl System's judgments. Joining her are new enforcers and junior inspector Mika Shimotsuki, a young woman blindly and inflexibly loyal to Sibyl. As Akane ponders both the nature of her job and the legitimacy of Sibyl's verdicts, a disturbing new menace emerges.

A mysterious figure has discovered a way to control the Crime Coefficient—a number compiled from mental scans that allows Sibyl to gauge psychological health and identify potential criminals. Through these means, he is able to murder an enforcer, leaving behind a cryptic clue: "WC?" scrawled in blood on a wall.

Akane and the rest of Division 01 soon find themselves playing a deadly game against their new foe, coming face-to-face with a conspiracy threatening not only the authority of the Sibyl System, but the very foundation of Akane's own convictions.

Alright watch. Not amazing or bad, just alright.

I loved season 1 but season 2 doesn't really compare as far as plot and characters however it does a lot right.

Does a lot of the same things right, great animation, sound effects, and general vibes. If you want just a bit of mindless psychological action horror type stuff you will enjoy it.

The weaker points are characters and plots.

In general there's very little character development, half the cast is carried on from the first season and don't really change or get reestablished, the other half are just kinda setup to serve the plot as far as traits, ... desires, and arcs, very few personal moments.
The overall plot wasn't too bad, about right to fill 11 episodes and nothing special. It's distinctly less adventurous than season 1, the episodic sub-plots felt plain in comparison, it feels like they were focused on the season arc and didn't branch out much.
It was also a bit samey to season 1 at parts, Its like someone showed season 1 to a room of pretty good writers and asked them to make 11 more episodes.

Again it gets A+ rating for at least writing an ending and tying up a lot of the story lines it setup throughout the season.

Overall would recommend watching, beats 80% of anime out there, but it is a lot more plain and lacks the flair of season 1.
Only so much you can do in 11 episodes i guess, I think 16 episodes with the extras just being bottle episodes to establish characters and maybe some wild sub-plots would have made it amazing.

Mixed Feelings

One of the central moral messages of Psycho Pass is its commentary on corrupted law and the dangers of allowing external forces to dictate what is right and wrong to warn against surrendering your moral compass to a system that pulls the strings like a puppet master. That’s why the world of Psycho Pass is so broken that it mirrors how corrupted law and judgment can damage society and humanity as a whole, and how many lives it has already cost.

Now let’s get into the quality of the second season. I can see why the critics reacted the way they did when compared to the ... first season, which was nearly a perfect anime to sit through. Personally, I think the second season would have worked better as a movie adaptation, or at least in a longer format, given how rushed it felt. At times, it even lost sight of its own point, despite incorporating twists and unique plots for each case. It was also difficult to connect with many of the characters, since their personalities and characteristics were barely fleshed out. If there’s one thing I really appreciated, it’s how much Akane has grown as a female protagonist but despite the disastrous circumstances of season two, she developed significantly in her outlook, becoming almost parallel to Kogami in certain respects. At times, it even felt as though they were hinting that she might fall like Kogami and become a latent criminal herself but still, her entire character arc is compelling because it shows how she grows and adapts while dealing with everything alone, especially now that Kogami has essentially disappeared from society. I’d also say the second season still had a strong point in its portrayal of villains and antagonists where they often came across as truly psychopathic, yet the writing gave them a sense of justification that made them feel like fully realized characters, even when their intentions contradicted human morality and the basic right to live. The weakest aspect, however, is undeniably how rushed the season was and with more time, such as in a movie format where certain plot points could have been expanded and the pacing and overall volume of the story would have been far stronger.

Sure, season two is a much weaker series compared to the near-perfect first season, but it’s still interesting to watch how Akane handles everything on her own with the new inspectors. The new cast feels much weaker compared to season one, where every character was fun, sharp, and engaging by the standard of an investigative series. As anyone familiar with Psycho Pass would expect, season two presents fewer cases and far fewer clues to piece together in uncovering the true identity of Kamui when compared to how long it took to finally capture Makishima and connect all the dots. In almost every aspect, season two is weaker than the first. But then why is it still worth watching and fun at the same time? I think it’s because the writing still manages to create strong breaking points and deliver moments of excitement. Even when the story becomes predictable or the writing feels rushed in trying to push its points across, it’s still fun to watch the action unfold, the characters work through the mysteries, and to see Akane grow and develop. In fact, Akane in season one and season two almost feel like two different people. By season two, she’s become a completely serious character, showing much less of her softer side, though it’s still there occasionally. The director avoids making her a fully gloomy character despite what she went through in season one to draw clear distinctions from Kogami while also highlighting parallels and similarities to him at the same time.

Overall, while I enjoyed the show a lot, I also completely understand why people didn’t like this season as much and why some have mixed opinions about it, or even outright hate it to the point of calling it a mess in the franchise. It definitely has flaws in its writing, especially when compared to the first season, which delivered such a flawless TV experience but even with weaker writing, it still carried that distinct Psycho Pass level of excitement and for me, at least, it remained a pretty enjoyable watch.

Waited for Kougami the entire time watching hoping he’d eventually show up, and was severely disappointed in the end. The series foreshadowed him multiple times, even stating he was out on the run somewhere, but there was no search for him or anything. Usually, I can forgive plot twists like these in other series but Kougami really made the first season for me, and I wanted to see him again because he was so important. His relationship with Akane and his struggle with Makishima is what made season 1 as good as it was.

The new characters felt bland, and their incorporation in the story felt ... rushed somewhat. Sho was basically just there for his work on holos, his background barely mentioned besides his pills. I was really interested in him, but he was just so lackluster with little development. Tougane, as first, annoyed me a little bit because he felt like a Kougami replacement. Especially in the scene where he fights with the dummy and then has a smoke afterwards, talking with Akane. Really had me thinking the show completely dropped Kougami and replaced him with Tougane. However, Tougane began to change a lot and show his true colors to us. I was so interested in seeing how he’d turn out, but he literally just turned out as a dude with mommy issues.

The worst new character to get involved was Shimotsuki. People say that if a show can introduce a character you feel strongly towards, whether you hate or love them, it’s a good show, but in this case, Shimotsuki was just poorly done. She is just awful to watch; being the worst inspector we’ve seen so far. I don’t think Ginoza was a great inspector (even though I love him), because he was always pretty incompetent, but at least he was FUN to watch. Whenever he was paranoid about his psycho-pass or wary around the enforcers, you could always tell there was a reason why he was; it being explained later on is season 1. Shimotsuki is just an ahole.

This brings me to another point. Ginoza was made an enforcer, and I thought that was one of the only good things seasons 2 did. Until he got barely any lines, and all his development at the end of season 1 was just forgotten. He was one of my favorite characters, I loved the complexity of his relationship with his father from season 1 and how interesting the differences between him and Akane were. I’m upset at how little lines and screen time Ginoza got, especially since he is one of the only remaining members of the season 1 cast.

There was another character remaining in division 1 who was there in season 1 besides Akane and Ginoza, and that was Yayoi. She’s so irrelevant, but she definitely had potential to be something more. We got a good episode about her previously, explaining her past and motives to join MWPSB as an enforcer, but she was barely in season 2. I wish her relationship with Shion was explored more, because we’re given a few scenes with them together in bed, but nothing more. It would’ve been better had it been developed.

Now, on to the main antagonist, Kamui. He’s really just a sad attempt at recreating the amazing villain that Makishima was. The show tried to make us care about him, but it was so hard to care about the plane crash events or anything that had happened in their society 12 or so years ago. Kamui also had such little personality and besides his violence, was extremely uninteresting. Makishima had more going for him than just being violent, as he was very intelligent, had interesting motives for his crimes, etc.

I really wanted to like this season, but it was so disappointing. I really love psycho-pass, but this sequel was just not it.
