Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.

Youto Yokodera wants to be seen in a way different from most men: as a pervert. However, his lewd actions are often misinterpreted as good intentions, and people cannot see his true nature. Upon hearing rumors of a cat statue that can banish an unwanted trait, he searches for it and prays for his façade to be removed. But each wish comes at a price: those unwelcomed traits are transferred to someone else who desires them!

After realizing that vocalizing his dirty thoughts is not the best thing, Youto decides to regain his lost traits by seeking out the person who received them. Unfortunately, he was not alone in praying to the cat statue, and now he must not only fix his life, but the lives of others as well.

This anime tricked me, I'll admit. I generally don't like to read reviews of a show before finishing it, so I don't spoil myself to much of it beforehand, maybe if I had done that this time I would have known better what I was getting into, but that was simply not the case. I let myself be deceived by its cutesy aesthetics, ridiculous synopsis and tags on the side of its webpage and started watching Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko expecting to see a light-hearted comedy of some hopelessly pervy guy and the harem of pretty girls he builds through the series.

Oh, just how ... wrong I was.

Maybe the fact that this anime was made by the same people who made the Pet Girl of Sakurasou should have given it away, but this anime, rather than beign the average slice-of-life comedy I was expecting touches in some pretty profound and complex themes of human relations and the way they develop when put under stressful situations like those we see on this show itself. It was another reviewer down this thread that put it better, I believe: "This is a philosophy anime masquerading as a comedy anime" or something of the like. And I couldn't agree more with that statement.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko manages to, in 12 short episodes, develop an ever-evolving web of relationship between the characters. That goes from hate to love to feeling envy for one another. It gets the audience hooked-up in its premise by hyping up a mystery that gets solved at the end of the series with a wild turn that not even I, who generally makes little theories through the series that end-up beign proven correct in more predictable animes could have gotten right. The funny and lewd fanservice moments this series provide are mainly a side-show for the overarching plot of mystery and confusion this anime deliver. Its tailored towards a more mature audience, keep that in mind before deciding to watch it or not.

From a technical standpoint, this anime is almost flawless. J.C.Staff really know how to get their things done when they are making a series, although that is something to be expected, at this point. The character designs are cute and adorable, the backgrounds are pretty and well drawn, and the music is subpar compared to other anime of this style. It features a pretty sweet and catchy OPs and EDs I didn't want to skip once for just how good they were. They were surely trying to transmit emotions of warmness and sweetness to the viewer that try to be the overall vibe the show gives to those who watch it. I say "try" because it is difficult for a show to attempt to be both sweet and warm when one of the main characters literally cannot express emotion through her face and the cast is getting into all sort of situations that leave one with a bittersweet feeling on the mouth. That is the only thing I would say this anime didn't succeed at.

In conclusion: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko is not a show for slice-of-life lovers, rather one for those searching for something a bit more mature to watch than the aforementioned genre of animes. It certainly may not be for everybody (for one I know this is not generally my kind of show), but is an enjoyable experience for those who choose to watch and engage with it. If you feel like the kind of viewer who would enjoy such a watching: go ahead, chances are you will enjoy it more than I did.

Mixed Feelings

HenNeko is fascinating, as it’s a Romantic Mystery Comedy with fanservice built around the one new girl per arc harem structure.
That being said it is not a harem, as it focusses on the relationship between a "perverted" male lead & Dandere female lead and their experiences with wishes, how they affect others, relationships & memories. The harem structure is used to change the genre, theme and tone of each arc by introducing new characters and using them to focus on different problems all the while maintaining & building the relationship between the two main leads & a thread of wishes.

Certain arcs maintain the consistency & ... comedy of the first episode but two arcs specifically (home & Italy) slow the show to a halt with convoluted events while opening a can of worms in regards to wish mechanics, character motivations and reasoning that gets tossed under a rug, all while the side characters from prior arcs fade into obscurity or appear for five seconds of fanservice.

The story & progression being tied to character introductions causes problems & inconsistences as early as the first girl and gets worse with each following arc by dropping characters, threads and past information until 3 episodes of incoherent trash, only to improve significantly for the show’s conclusion for one of the best 3 episode arcs I’ve come across in a generic show.

The disconnection from the tones & overall quality of those that came before the final three episodes is fascinating & baffling to experience and yet you are required to watch the entire season and ignore plot points, actions, grievances & statements (emotional expression & dreams) from the leads in order to do just that.

HenNeko is entertaining even when riddled with inconsistency, incoherent arcs & generic, shallow & abandoned characters BUT it also has subtle moments of intrigue, a fun romance, a web of wishes and one arc of greatness hidden within, that will leave you emotional and thought provoked to some degree.

For having hentai in the title it had actually very little panty shots, ass or boobs. I was very disappointed. The less important stuff like characters and plot were bad. MC was the usual good guy though he had this ouvert "pervert" status, not really hindering him from attracting girls non the less. I liked the bizarre and dramatic plot twists, though I had hoped he would keep the "super honest, bottom from the heart" wish throughout because with his dirty thoughts it could have created so much more. Instead it went meh. And the girls were not interesting either. Loli, cute little sister tropes, ... big sis big boobs and even shotacon towards the end... I did not sign up for the last one.
