Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage

Rokurou "Rock" Okajima has joined the Lagoon Company, a pirate mercenary group which operates out of Roanapur, Thailand. Despite his initial protests, this filthy slum of depraved souls and merciless criminals now serves as the former salaryman's home. Stranded, with nothing left of his past life but the clothes on his back and his inner morality, Rock is forced to perform jobs alongside the other members of the Lagoon crew. Berated for his lack of spine as he wades through the underbelly of society, he must decide whether to continue on amidst the gunfire and ruthlessness or risk everything he has in an attempt to be free. Whether he chooses the comfort of a familiar land or the freedom of being an outlaw, his decision will have lasting consequences on the crew who gave him a home.

The best gun-action anime out there. Despite what some may think at first, Black Lagoon isn’t just action. It’s also a deep psychological story about a man thrown into an immoral world—where there is no true good or evil, only shades of gray. A world that tests and reshapes his very soul.

The fights are intense and well-directed, making the series really engaging. Despite its mature, emotional, and serious tone, it doesn’t always take itself too seriously—it balances things with humor and a laid-back, sarcastic attitude.

What fascinates me most is watching an ordinary, law-abiding citizen get thrown into a world of criminals and mercenaries—and witnessing his ... struggle to hold onto his integrity and moral beliefs. At first, those values just begin to crack… but over time, they break apart entirely, until you can barely tell him apart from the rest of the cast of Roanapur.

Thanks to his initial innocence, the show offers a transformation arc similar to Breaking Bad. We get to witness how someone is slowly, almost inevitably, consumed by the criminal underworld.

Highly recommended.

Mixed Feelings

Black Lagoon's strengths remain mostly the same: It has (mostly) strong narratives and interesting things to say both about its world and ours. The character side, however, takes a tumble. with the core of Rock's character in particular being called into focus only to be resolved in very confusing fashion. The show has also learned the habit of using fanservice as a motif to represent its women being vulnerable or incompetent, which felt super gross and malicious. It's by and large the same anime, but marred by distractions.

Worth watching if you enjoyed the first season and are willing to put up with (or don't care ... about) the aforementioned wrinkles.

Where to begin. Black Lagoon may in fact be the worst animation ever, and it boggled the mind that someone felt a second season was necessary. Just as well, I feel it is my duty to the MAL community to help cease the spread of misinformation that seems to be plaguing the internet about this "series" (and i use the term loosely I assure you)

Story:1 Basically it's just American garbage of run around and shoot everything that is in sight. Clearly, the creators of this atrocity felt the need to service the lowest common denominator. I find it rather insulting to be honest, that ... someone out there thinks so little of my intelligence that this filth could pass as a "story" of intrigue.

Art:1 We have seen it all before I'm afraid, colors in between dark lines, however this particular animator was quite inconsistent and down right boorish with their animations.

Sound:3 I suppose guns and explosions all sound the same.

Characters:1 This is my main grievance with this garbage, it is the fact at how one dimensional and flat the characters are. Their motives are spoon fed to us and the exposition that is thrown into our faces leave little to the imagination, as if we are required to have everything spelled out for us. No depth at all, just a bunch of shallow, empty puppets who are placed in their specific roles.

Enjoyment:1 For reasons stated above.

Overall:1 Stay away if you value your time and dignity.
