City Hunter 2

Finally finished it.

Imagine what would happen if Ataru from Urusei Yatsura was 20+ something years old, was a sort of gun for hire with a god-like aim and was twice lustier? That would be city hunter's protagonist. Oh, and instead of Lum his partner is Akane which gets ability to spawn a 100 ton hammer anywhere.

I'm not sure why exactly I picked this anime, I suppose I wanted some of the 80s magic?

The main attractive point of the anime is visual style. Absolutely amazing 80s characters, and this time entire main cast is adults, without teens or preteens in it, without school scenes, etc. It ... is very refreshing. This anime for some reason has absolutely gorgeous designs for female characters. I can't think of any two identical female characters in the anime. That would be probably the main reason for watching it. If only the other aspects were as good.

Story:
Feels bland, and not very coherent. Closer to the end of the show it gets better, for around 8 episodes, but then quality drops. Basically, it is neither funny nor catching, and it is full of over the top fighting scenes... which are never the less not very interesting. Protagonist has a god like aim, and could probably fold origami by shooting paper with his gun if he wanted. He can untie people by shooting, unscrew bolts by shooting the bolt, juggle things then bullets, and he never misses. He's equally skilled in hand to hand combat. The thing is... this dude constantly switches with "serious" mode and "more perverted version of Ataru" mode in order to get hit by "hyakuton hamma"(100 ton hammer) his assistant Kaoru can materialize at will at any point of time. The problem is this isn't very interesting in 2016.

Art:
Absolutely amazing style and amazing designs of all female characters. Lots of beautiful and gorgeous characters. Pretty much never seen anything like it. Backgrounds, however, and anything that is not female cast are not very detailed. The characters are in 80s softer style. Basically, if you saw Gunbuster or Urusei yatsura that's it. Rounder faces, rounder eyes, etc., except that characetrs are all adults with "tall" proportions. I wish more anime was made with this style.

Sound;
Nothing really interesting. Typical 80s music, but nothing catching. Might work if you're a 1980s fan.

Characters:
Not really well portrayed. Protagonist switches between "sweeper" and "pervet" mode too often, and a lot of anime revolves around him getting hit by Kaoru's hammer, or getting in trouble trying to (unsuccessfully) hit on another girl. Kaoru can be adorable at times, but overall character portrayal is not very well done, and they are seen more as plot devices than actual characters.

Enjoyment:
Gets boring at times.

Overall:
Worth watching for the amazing art style, can be quite bland/boring otherwise. Might work as "watch it to relax" kind of anime. The series don't go out of their way to be overly dramatic.
