Sousou no Frieren 2nd Season

Following the First-Class Mage Exam, the trio—elven mage Frieren, warrior Stark, and first-class mage Fern—gains access to the dangerous Northern Plateau. As the party presses onward toward Aureole, formidable adversaries force Stark to confront his insecurities, solidifying his resolve and his role as the party's frontliner. Meanwhile, Fern continues to cherish the gifts she has been blessed with throughout her life, each a reminder of those she holds dear.

Frieren—still honoring her vow to understand humanity—revisits memories of her journey with the Hero's party and her fleeting encounter with a legendary figure. As she reflects on the passage of time, the elven mage quietly questions whether she has truly changed, yet in the small, almost subtle choices that she makes, there are signs that she might have become more human than she realizes.

- Frieren Season 2 is a Masterpiece -

After Frieren season 1, my anticipation for the quality of season 2 was through the roof, and for good reason. Season 1 felt like lightning in a bottle, from its incredible narrative, its articulate animation and cinematic direction, along with its top-notch voice acting and music. Its creative direction alone lets me confidently say that season 1 feels like an anime that can compete with films beyond "anime."

Moving on to season 2, I feel that it measured up to the first season in so many ways. In this season, we got an amazing mix of action, ... smooth pacing, and so many emotional character arcs with characters that had enough screen time for us to feel invested in them.

It continued giving us those tear-jerking flashbacks with Himmel and the first journey as a whole. Additionally, the ending credits scene of Himmel writing in his journal, being connected to a major episode in the season, was a wonderful surprise.

If there's one thing this season proved, it's that MADHOUSE knows what they are doing with Frieren; they proved that season one's success wasn't a fluke, in fact, it was a labor of love and passion.

However, despite how great this season was, I feel that it was sadly held back by how short it was. That's what I feel keeps it from being a 10/10. Some of the ideas and concepts that were being built in the season felt cut short by the end. It's so sad what is happening to the creators of Frieren. I pray they are healed and are able to continue creating the magnificent story that is Frieren: Beyond Journeys End.

Mixed Feelings

This season was truly mid. I had hopes that it could turn things around by the end of it, but all we got is a trailer/cliffhanger that tries to save it from being mid, but it's really not enough.

Ok, Frieren is about a chill adventure that is just flowing at its own pace, and that should be appreciated as such. That's not a reason for repeating the same stuff over and over again. All this season was, is the same sob story about demons breaking shit and people in each part of the northern plateau, trying to fight and live day by day.

That's great, it ... is a beautiful story, BUUUUT, repeating that shit over and over again is just BORING.

The key word for this season is BORING. Frieren is the proof that you could have great animation, great music, if the story board is not on par, it just gets boring, even with incredible fights and a writing that tries to convey something, which I appreciate.

For me, this season of Frieren has just started to show that the author doesn't have it unfortunately.

Frieren Season 2 in a Nutshell:

1. Episode starts on the road with empty dialogue
2. They find a town or other point of interest Frieren has history with (she has history with everything, of course)
3. They receive a random quest
4. They solve said quest in the quickest, most uneventful way possible.
5. The remaining 15 minutes of the episodes are spend on melancholic reminiscence of Frierens adventure with Himmel the Hero™, how Himmel the Hero™ is the greatest dude ever and how everything these 3 idiots do is just a second hand adventure of the Hero Party.

Lets start with the characters:
Nothing much to say here. The characters ... are flat and cookie cutter. The cast has 0 chemistry with each other.
Everyone is the same deadpan (bar some Stark moments), speaks in the same monotonous tone, has the same expression and the same character traits. Season 1 was able to masquerade these issues at least, Season 2 made them blatantly obvious.
Also, it seems that the characters never exchange a word in between episodes, all dialogue (which is as flat and uninspired as the characters) is condensed into the episode because characters have nothing of value to say. Which is hard to believe, because there are weeks and months in between episodes.

The Plot:


Yeah, theres no plot. Just some random RPG quests and flashbacks about how great Himmel was.

It tries to establish a subplot with the Demon General, which quickly devolves into a mess of the worst shonen tropes and undermines the established power scaling of the world and demon characterization. Threats for the main characters are non existent, there are no stakes. Genau gets stabbed at the beginning and continues to fight with no issues and apparently his magic wings are more powerful than the mana infused demons swords and he just randomly bisects the demon general with them. Characters getting donutted through the chest by the demon general (which was established to be one of the strongest demons theyve met so far) who suddenly realizes he can extend his arms, which he had completely forgotten while swinging 4 swords around like an idiot and dies to 2 of our mains, of which both of them shouldve been dead thrice at this point. Seriously, why did that Demon even have swords? Why not extend your arms with the swords? Why not attack 4 different body parts, making it impossible for Stark to parry?
Such a stupid fight.


Now in the last episode the group cant pass a small canyon with flight, because "winds are too strong".
Later that episode we see Fern just going 200 meters into the air at complete standstill.

This is a recurring theme in Frieren, the show artificially creates a problem, that should be easily solvable, to include Frierens melancholy subplots. Here we have a Dwarf (you know, these guys that like to live underground) that spends 200 years trying to build a bridge on a mountain. He was up there because his village (of those guys that like to live underground) got overrun by demons. He tried to build said bridge, because according to him it wouldve saved many more people. Incidentally, he just ran out of funds when Himmel the Hero™ was there to give him his parties funds. Think about this story and its inconsistencies for a second...
Also, that Frieren (who lived very secluded and avoided contact, had no interest in people outside her party until she started traveling with fern) knows characters that she shouldnt (Hero of the North for example), just to establish cheap connections to the hero party is another a glaring issue and breaks immersion.


Animation and Sound:
Absolute Top Tier. The 4 remaining points and solely because of the production.


Summary:

The Show took everything that made Season 1 fresh and exciting out and kept the cheap crybait, shabbily written characters, poor world building and turned those up to eleven. The Story of Himmel the Hero™ was interesting because it established Frieren as a character in Season 1. Now its just used to chase melancholic moment after moment, to give the viewer a sense of depth it doesnt have and keep them emotionally invested.
The Frieren formula shouldve already outlived itself at the end of season 1, yet here we are with the author beating that dead horse into a bloody pulp.

Also, to anyone calling this a masterpiece. Please, there are dozens of shows in the MAL Top 100 that outclass Frieren in all but production. Go watch those and review your opinion on Frieren after. This weird hivemind movement that calls this show perfect, giving 10/10 scores, without even the slightest idea why it is are breaking any sense of accurate ratings. What we can see here is a mass hysteria of fake hype; people that convince themselves they are watching the pinnacle of art, just to be part of something "special" and not to miss on the next big thing.

This is not a masterpiece, neither in an emotional or objective sense.
