Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu

On a cold December day, Kyon arrives at school prepared for another outing with his fellow SOS Brigade members. However, much to his surprise, he discovers that almost everything has changed completely: Haruhi Suzumiya and Itsuki Koizumi are nowhere to be found; Mikuru Asahina does not recognize him at all; Yuki Nagato is a regular human; and Ryouko Asakura has mysteriously returned. Although he is no stranger to the supernatural, Kyon is disturbed by this odd turn of events and decides to investigate on his own.

Finding himself to be the only person that is aware of the previous reality, Kyon is now faced with a difficult choice: to finally live the normal life he has always wanted, or uncover a way to turn back the hands of time and restore his chaotic yet familiar world.

This movie is that really delicious cake you were promised after doing your chores. It's the reward you get after finishing two seasons, 8 god-awful episodes, and an unsatisfying 28th episode finale. The Disappearance of Harui Suzumiya is the oh-so perfect curtain call to the entire series. A masterful work of art and a heartwrenching plot that will leave you divided between two possible endings (I would have chosen the altered one). Of course, you're required to watch all two seasons before watching this one, since you'll be completely lost if you don't. For fans who finished both seasons, the movie does start pretty quickly. ... The prologue itself is like your typical Harui Suzumiya episode. I rarely give 10/10s but after investing so much time into the series, and after getting attached to all the characters, this movie was too much of an emotional rollercoaster that it would be criminal to withhold that masterpiece rating. The story combines themes of parallel universes and time-travel in such a coherent and logical way. Plus, it finally fleshes out one of our most beloved, stoic, and book-loving characters. Anime films tend to be mid due to their non-canon plotlines and generic stories. However, this one is an exception. It actually delivers an amazing top-off to the franchise as a whole. Also, the soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous. It's like watching a Studio Ghibli movie without the Ghibli art style. Big applause to directors Tatsuya Ishihara and Yasuhiro Takemoto for giving the fans their much needed closure.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya felt like a reward for my patience after watching the first two seasons. The movie moves to a completely different level, both emotionally and in the way it delivers its message.
What I loved most is the main idea of the film: strangeness can give life meaning. The calm, normal world shown in the movie felt empty. It made me realize that chaos, uncertainty, and even discomfort are not bad things—they are what make life feel real and meaningful.
The emotions in this film are quiet but very strong. It doesn’t force sadness or drama. Instead, it slowly builds a feeling that ... stays with you. When the movie ended, I felt a strange mix of wonder and sadness, and I couldn’t fully explain why.
For me, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is not just an ending. It feels like a reward for staying patient with the series, and a reminder that imperfect and strange worlds are the ones that truly give life its value

The whole idea was summarized by Haruhi herself by a quote:
"What's wrong with being weird?
Normal is boring"

Mixed Feelings

Story

The premise for this movie is not groundbreaking but it is an interesting one. Aside from that that, the movie is seriously too long with pacing issues especially in the beginning. For such a long movie, not a lot happens that moves the plot foward. I think it could have been condensed half an hour and still get the same point across. Even for this series known for being out there, this film feels very grounded which may or may not be your cup of tea.

Art

It is very noticeable that the animation is extremely fluid. The art style is not too much different from ... the anime series

Sound

Good, but nothing spectacular.

Character

Haruhi which I found to be the most interesting character in the anime series does not have much of a presence in this movie. What a bummer. This movie focuses more on Nagato and Kyon and they get ample development throughout the course of the movie.

Enjoyment

I had high expectations for this movie, but I was ultimately let down. I did not find it very moving or interesting and the very long length does not help. Found myself realtively bored throughout some moments in the movie. To be fair, I was not a big fan of the original anime series either

Overall

This movie is quite a commitement. I would not recommend it unless you really enjoy the Haruhi Suzumiya series
