What to Know

Critics Consensus

Serving up Timothée Chalamet at his most infectiously charismatic, Marty Supreme is a propulsive epic that realizes its sky-high aspirations even while it critiques its indelible hero's toxic ambition.

The pleasures are many: an electric star turn from Timothée Chalamet; a splendid diorama of Manhattan’s Lower East Side circa 1952...And we get a wholly fresh take on that ever-popular genre, the ping-pong movie. Go to Full Review

Chalamet is fantastic in this role. It may very well be his best work yet, in a career filled with excellent performances. Go to Full Review

For Marty and his namesake film, perfection is not attainable. But sometimes, its pursuit delivers something even more interesting and memorable than a banal picture of perfection: someone to root for, flaws and all. Go to Full Review

...Marty Supreme is one of the best films of 2025, a powerhouse statement of aesthetics and performance that set the stage for a remarkable character study of masculine ambition and capitalistic pursuits of greatness. Go to Full Review

None of this tells us anything new beyond confirming the insidious, treacherous, bad character traits that the millennium so far has showcased. Go to Full Review

Daniel B 1h Maybe the worst movie that I’ve watched in the theater this century. Keep in mind, I am rooting for Chalamet to become the great actor he aims to be. But he’s nowhere near that here, and Safdie did him no favors. The writing, direction, editing, and soundtrack are all simply awful. This is a movie set in 1952, yet most of the music is obscure 80’s pop. But what really kills this film are the scattered plot lines. It’s not committed enough to be a sports movie, and ping pong isn’t interesting enough to carry it even if it was. It’s not an underdog film because Marty is not likable enough to root for. He is an annoying, whining, self-indulgent twerp of a man-child who thinks the world owes him something. It’s not funny enough to be a comedy, not sentimental enough to be a drama. So what is it? I thought maybe it was going to run with the story about the invention of a modern ball, but that idea goes nowhere. Nothing sticks. It’s all just a mess of half-cooked ideas. You wanna call that genius? Go right ahead, but it makes for terrible story telling. I actually think this film is a case study on the power of marketing and social media. They spent so much time, money, and energy telling us how great this movie would be that the majority of (I’m guessing mostly younger) people had already decided they loved it before even watching it. It’s a metaphor for what social media can do to the human mind— it can convince the masses that something is good even when they are staring at a dumpster fire. It’s not a good movie, you’ve just been “Marty Supremed.” See more Paul R 1h THIS is why I go to the movies. Incredible, electrifying performance by Chalamet, Paltrow's best perhaps ever, and a rollercoaster of a ride with an eclectic cast.
