Belle Barnes’s grandmother has Alzheimer’s and thinks Belle is married to Harlan Slade, the man who jilted Belle eight years ago at the altar. So Belle asks Harlan if he will pretend to be her husband in order to make her ailing grandmother happy and less confused. Harlan instead proposes a marriage of convenience to Belle so she won’t have to lie to her grandmother, and because he feels he owes Belle for doing her wrong and regrets ever hurting her so many years ago. He also still has feelings for Belle.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I really liked Belle. She worked as a large-animal vet tech, but her real passion was in rescuing animals, to the extent that she sometimes broke the law to do it. Harlan was the Deputy Sheriff with hopes of becoming Sheriff one day. He was a wonderful father to his adorable daughter Ivy. He did have some moments where he acted like a complete jerk to Belle, but at least he admitted when he was wrong and saw the error of his ways. I loved the adorable animals that Belle rescued. There was lots of drama in this story which kept me completely interested and entertained throughout....more
