Day 28 – Candlelight
a book that kept you up into the early hours

Like in 2024, going today with a French suspense novel that kept me up.
Though this time, it’s not a classic, but a 2025 release.
I read a lot of books with a few of my French students.
We usually divide the book in three or four weeks, but this one, I had to keep going to know the end, couldn’t wait anothr week, nor another day!

L'Avocat du diable

📚 L’Avocat du diable,
by Jean-François Pasques
Mystery
April 2, 2025
304 pages

MY VERDICT:
The theme of how you can let yourself be psychologically seduced and attracted by others was mindblowing.

Day 25 – Christmas Day
a book you received as a gift

That was earlier in the year, an audiobook offered by one of my French students,
so sweet of her:

Un Animal sauvage

🎧 Un Animal sauvage,
by Joël Dicker
Narrated by Laurent Natrella
Mystery
2024
398 pages / 10H07
Available in English as Wild Animal

The structure is very unusual, with zillions of flashbacks, that of course drove me crazy, suspense wise. A very smart way to reveal what’s going on very very slowly.

Here is part of the synopsis – as usual, the full synopsis reveals way to much!

“From the devious mind of New York Times bestselling author Joël Dicker —master of the plot twist—comes this gripping domestic thriller that transforms into an ambitious heist mystery involving a famed Geneva jewelry boutique.

On July 2, 2022, two criminals set out to rob a jewelry shop in Geneva. But even with a foolproof plan, their “perfect” heist will prove far from uneventful. . . .
Twenty days earlier, on a luxurious estate along the shores of Lake Geneva, Sophie Braun prepares to celebrate her fortieth birthday. Her life seems she has a fairytale marriage, two perfect children, and lives in a stylish modern mansion surrounded by lush forest. But her idyllic world is about to crumble. Her husband is becoming embroiled in petty schemes. Her neighbor, a policeman with a spotless reputation, is obsessed with her and spies on the most intimate moments of her life. Then, on her birthday, she receives a gift from a mysterious prowler that endangers her life.”

Day 23 – Sleigh bells
a series that you want to ring out the praise for

In 2023 and 2024, I featured manga series.
Something different his year:
The Detective Galileo series, by Keigo Higashino.
This mystery series has 10 books in Japanese, alas only five available in English.
The latest book they translated is volume 10 in Japanese, so I assume that’s it in English! Very sad.
I have read several and have really been enjoying Galileo and the other characters, and great plots.
Here is my presentation of the one I read this year:

Invisible Helix

📚 Invisible Helix
(Detective Galileo #10),
by Keigo Higashino
Japanese mystery
透明な螺旋
was first published in 2021
Translated by Giles Murray
US publication:
December 17, 2024 by Minotaur Books
288 pages

MY VERDICT:
A corpse in Tokyo Bay unveils Detective Galileo’s most personal case yet: a skillful weaving of murder’s surface simplicity into profound revelations about family bonds.
