The Chicks "C'mon Chicks" 1968

The Chicks - sisters Suzanne and Judy Donaldson. They had a steam of pop hits in New Zealand between 1965 and 1970. Suzanne married Bruce Lynch and records as Suzanne Lynch…

...Instantly recognisable with their matching outfits, trendy haircuts and up-tempo, harmony-rich pop singles, sisters Donaldson rose to become some of New Zealand’s biggest stars as The Chicks. For a whirlwind five-year period from 1965 they were seldom off our TV screens or radio airwaves. They played countless gigs and toured with other New Zealand stars and international artists, including Sandie Shaw, PJ Proby and The Pretty Things.

The Chicks "Second Album" 1966

Normally you could just ignore a singing duo like "The Chicks". They were not called 'The Chickens' for nothing, because they were nothing more than nice faces with good voices. They were modeling clay in the hands of their producers, famous for dress style, hair and - it must be said - their voices. But they did not produce their own material. They just sang what was popular back then, exclusively...

...To understand that, you have to take a look at the world map and locate New Zealand. From the middle of the 60s the first bands of the so-called "British Invasion" began to conquer the world musically. In fact, they did nothing more than travel the good old continent of Europe (the songs with titles like 'Night Ferry to England' or 'This Flight tonight' are legendary). And the very best bands were also allowed to undergo the disastrous exertions of US tours (which broke many of them). Initially only very few went to Down Under or even New Zealand (the Stones were in Australia for the first time in '66 + even for two dates in New Zealand). The market there was too small and the distance too far, even if it would have been 'home games' in terms of language. The opposite was the case, if you wanted to get up there, you had to go to England (Bee Gees, Easybeats, and later even Nick Cave and many others).
But the new music of the 1960s could be heard on the radio in the farthest corners of the world. So what do the concert halls and venues fill with? Take a cover band - or, as in the case of the 'Chicks', two pretty faces, two sisters who no one can be angry with and send them across the villages. With great success. And so 'The Chicks' supply us with more or less often heard titles from the rich US and UK fundus, pretty and carefully covered, but not with a single self-written song. Nice to have a listen again, but the (musical) emancipation in New Zealand had to wait in the late 60s.
During the 1960s, two young sisters from Auckland took New Zealand’s music charts by storm. The Chicks — Judy and Sue Donaldson — were 14 and 16 years old when they were first discovered by musician Peter Posa. The duo became famous for their matching outfits, stylish hairdos and catchy covered pop songs, and their popularity was bolstered by regular performances on hip television music show C'mon. C'mon Chicks was the title of their 3rd album. - Gaius

The Chicks "The Sound of the Chicks" 1965

This was the first album to be released by Kiwi duo The Chicks...

...The A-Side: It starts of with their first single "Heart of Stone". A decent number which nicely opens the album. Following this is one which seems standard for Viking recording artists "You Don't Talk About Love". Viking label mate Dinah Lee also recorded this on her first album "Introducing... Dinah Lee" a year previous. The third track is the highlight on this LP, as this is THE song that got them noticed and was a big in 1965, The Hucklebuck. A very fast moving number which rightfully became a smash hit. This is a cover version you've just gotta hear!. Tracks 4 and 5 "Ticket To Ride" and "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" respectively are both Lennon & McCartney originals, sung in female form. They are faithful to the originals, and a very nice renditions. the Jewel Atkins classic "The Birds & The Bees" finishes off the A-side with this album, an ok cover, but probably the weakest song on the side. - the1goodiesguy

Godfathers "Dope, Rock 'n' Roll & Fucking In The Streets" 1992

Before their incarnation as The Godfathers they went by the name The Syd Presley Experience, which lasted from 1983 to 1985. They were signed to Epic Records in 1987. Their guitar-driven alternative rock sound was somewhat out of place in the electronica-driven music scene of the UK at the time. Some members of the band went on to form an outfit called The Germans with Rat Scabies, formerly of The Damned, in the early noughties.

Sixteen cuts of the band at the end of their career but pretty much the top of their game. Ace guitarist Kris Dollimore is gone by this point, but his Unreal World replacement does a fine job of replicating those riffs and tone. As one who is not much of a fan after (what I consider) the perfect Hit By Hit compilation, this sounded great to me. It's a legit release, but the band wasn't even slightly a commercial force by this point. Our friend Mike Bennett speculates it's origin as contract fulfillment. AND, what do you know...the title just happens to be the only thing I asked for as a Christmas gift (last year's request of "World Peace" didn't seem to come about...so I'm trying to be a bit more practical this year). Thanks again, Rob Tyner

The Mutton Birds "Rain, Steam & Speed" 1999

Envy of Angels has a higher percentage of remarkable songwriting, as anyone who's heard the smooth, flowing, lovely-but-not-wimpy "April," "Come Around," "She's Been Talking," and "Come Around" can attest…

…But that's not such a bad tradeoff for an LP that sounds more immediate; the self-produced Rain, Steam & Speed is less streamlined than Envy producer Hugh Jones' otherwise typically brilliant productions. And a good four or five of its tracks stand up to the greatest New Zealand tunes ever, by the Chills, Straightjacket Fits, Bats, Clean, etc. In fact, marry those bands' burbling, mannered, subconscious pop mastery with a more strident guitar sound and more upfront presentation, and you have the brave-sounding, luxuriant, gorgeous pop of "Green Lantern," "As Close as This," "Pulled Along By Love," and "Ray." This predilection peaks on a radiant accomplishment called "Winning Numbers." It arrests right from the brief, lofty, descending a cappella vocal it begins with, like diving off into a pool. The melody and lyrics are stirring -- insisting he would rip up a winning lottery ticket, singer Don McLashan prefers his life over those of the rich and famous -- and his crystalline, sterling voice fits the circular guitar trills wonderfully. The band even pulls off a country track, with McLashan sighing that he's had enough of "The Goodbye Drug," a drug he "used to like." So far along from their naive, self-titled 1992 debut on kiwi label Bag, the Mutton Birds have modestly but assuredly stepped into the current void and reminded listeners of the luxurious pleasures and romantic mysteries pop still can seek. Nina Simone "Four Women" 2003 The Nina Simone Philips Recordings - disc 4

Nina Simone recorded seven albums for the Philips label between 1964 and 1966. It was the period in her career in which her reputation was cemented as a world-class artist, and one in which she gained fame for her contributions to the civil rights movement as well. Despite the fact that she recorded great albums both before and after her years with Philips (most notably with RCA), her Philips period is easily her most enigmatic…

...Among her Philips recordings are her live label debut and six studio recordings featuring wildly varying instrumentation, arrangements, and contents. The box contains all seven LPs on four CDs, and includes one bonus track. But Simone's Philips period is a monolithic accomplishment when measured against many of her peers, both male and female. First there is the audacious Nina Simone in Concert recording, done on two separate dates in New York in March and April of 1964 and issued later that summer. Simone's political stance with "Old Jim Crow," "Mississippi Goddam," and Weill and Brecht's "Pirate Jenny" makes them feel like they are of a piece with Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" and Willard Robison's "Don't Smoke in Bed," where blues, jazz, folk songs, and Broadway tunes all come together in that theatrical, sultry, and smoldering voice. The reality of that initial performance was further reinforced on the Broadway-Blues-Ballads disc, which opens with the definitive rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and George Bass' wondrous "See Line Woman." Going from the small combo concert album -- where Simone accompanied herself on piano, to the lush orchestrations of the Broadway-Blues-Ballads album, with Hal Mooney conducting and writing the charts, is a jarring yet complementary experience. But it is on I Put a Spell on You, with its large and lush orchestral backing, and the chamber jazz setting of Pastel Blues that Simone's truly diva-like quality asserts itself. Working again with Mooney and complemented by Horace Ott on the former album, Simone found the orchestral formula and used it as a single musical instrument. True, it was one she could manipulate in terms of color and dynamic, but nonetheless, she used it as one would use a guitar, a saxophone, or a piano. Her voice found challenge and support in the various chromatic figures presenting themselves in songs like the title track, Charles Aznavour's "Tomorrow Is My Turn," "Take Care of Business," "Our September Song," "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Tell Me More and Then Some," "Strange Fruit," "Chilly Winds Don't Blow," and others, offering a vocalist in control not only of the melody, but the flow of emotion in the song, imparting its message to the instrumentalists and listeners even as it occurs to her in the act of singing.
On Let It All Out, Simone went back to work with Ott. Here she covered everyone from Bob Dylan ("The Ballad of Hollis Brown") to Duke Ellington ("Mood Indigo") to Rodgers & Hart on her signature tune ("Little Girl Blue"), and she co-wrote the inimitable, compelling "Images." But it is on Four Women (subtitled Wild Is the Wind) where Simone revealed how fully in control she was of virtually any repertoire she chose to sing. This is the gentlest of Simone's albums and arguably her best. Working with Ott -- who wrote a pair of songs for the album -- she showed a tenderness that was never as naked before or after as it was on tracks such as the title (authored by Simone) and "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair." On her last album for the label, Simone turned the tables once again. Recording with an orchestra arranged and conducted by Mooney this time out, as well as playing piano, Simone took on Chuck Berry ("Brown-Eyed Handsome Man"), Nat Adderley and Oscar Brown, Jr. ("Work Song"), Angelo Badalamenti ("I Hold No Grudge"), and Ellington ("The Gal from Joe's"), as well as herself and Rudy Stevenson, her longstanding guitarist, in her quest to thwart pop music's then radio-friendly dictum that substance was not to be rewarded with record sales. And she succeeded. Simone's career at this time, and forevermore, really would be inextricably entwined with the triumphs and tribulations of the civil rights movement, and she would not argue or complain. But it's far from dogmatic protest music that's featured here, but the true triumph of the era, in that a woman of Simone's uncompromising stature and artistry would be as highly visible and successful as she was. Four Women documents all the knots, turns, twists, peaks, and valleys of that journey and makes for an essential listening experience. This is history, this is art, this is the joy of pop at its finest. - AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

The Mutton Birds "Too hard Basket" Compilation ed. 1998

Too Hard Basket, subtitled B Sides and Bastards, is a limited release compilation of B-sides and unreleased tracks by the New Zealand band the Mutton Birds. The album was released via the band's website and gig sales. - wiki

The New Zealand pop band the Mutton Birds was led by singer/guitarist Don McGlashan, already a highly regarded figure in his native land for his work in the legendary post-punk-era group Blam Blam Blam. Also including ex-Six Volts guitarist David Long and drummer Ross Burge, the group began recording their debut album in late 1991. Following its completion, former Dribbling Darts bassist Alan Gregg was recruited to fill out the lineup. Preceded by the single "Dominion Road," the Mutton Birds' eponymous debut LP appeared on their own Bag Records label in 1992; a melodic pop effort informed by '60s-era influences, it also spawned the hit "Nature," and fell just shy of topping the New Zealand album charts. In mid-1993, the single "Your Window" provided the Mutton Birds with another hit, and they soon signed with Virgin, issuing their sophomore LP, Salty. In 1995, Virgin also released Nature, a compilation of the earlier two albums intended for the foreign market; Envy of Angels, the Mutton Birds' third studio effort, followed a year later. After 1997's Angle of Entry, Gregg was replaced by Tony Fisher for 1999's Rain, Steam & Speed. - Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny

The Looney Tunes "Cool Surfin'" 1994

First issue from this excellent German band. Trad approach, with very solid sound. The Looney Tunes are on the garage side. Their covers are quite good, and their originals like "Desert Bound" show a clear understanding of what surf music is all about. - Phil Dirt

Oh, yeah! These guys have got it down! With reverb and retro, the Looney Tunes kick it on these instro-surf covers and originals, complete with waves and the classic lo-fi, (mono?), distant garage sound of early sixties recordings. Cool Surfin' will fit nicely into the collection of any surf-guitar fan. - By P. Freebrook (new england)

The Mutton Birds "Salty" 1994

This second album by the New Zealand rock group is a counterpart follow-up to the exceptional songs and homespun feel of their debut, with 14 themes from Don McGlashan's increasingly remarkable songbook…

...In the Kiwi pop canon, the Mutton Birds may fall a little too mainstream for the Flying Nun stable sound of the Chills, the Clean, and the Bats, but are still too quirky for the crafty MOR sound of Neil Finn, Tim Finn, and Dave Dobbyn. The band enjoyed mainstream success in Australia and New Zealand but only made slight inroads into the U.S.A. and European audience -- possibly accredited to the topical Kiwi-centric themes that McGlashan uses as song narratives. His songwriting craft is highly sophisticated, often using evocative themes that examine the dramas of daily life in neurotic detail -- the effect can be simultaneously heart-wrenching and humorous. "The Heater" and "Ngaire" are pure pop of another era -- a '60s feel reminiscent of the Byrds inhabits many of McGlashan's songs. On the highly literate evocations of "When the Wind Comes Round" and "Queens English" he calls to mind David Byrne of Talking Heads at his most blue. The closing track, "Don't Fight It Marsha It's Bigger Than Both of Us," is, in fact, a remake of a 1983 hit by Don McGlashan's former band, Blam Blam Blam, which is a verbatim remake -- only without the dated drum machine that drives the original and with McGlashan's voice considerably matured. The album is mixed by studio whiz Tchad Blake, who works the psychedelic tone that the band tracked themselves in a low-tech setting to excellent effect. The standout track, "Anchor Me," is a sublime ballad featuring Jane Dodd from the Abel Tasmans, which is worth owning this album for alone.

The Mutton Birds "The Mutton Birds" 1992

On their 1992 debut, this New Zealand rock group was the vehicle for the extraordinary songwriting skills of Don McGlashan, a mainstay of the New Zealand pop scene who was as ubiquitous with artsy post-punk as Chris Knox in his homeland during the '80s…

...With this group he went for a total "Kiwiana" aesthetic with a strikingly topical lyric-writing approach that set them apart from the often-oblique sound of anti-podean avant rock. A good comparison for this album would be with the work of Australian songsmiths the Go-Betweens and Paul Kelly, who mine similar oblique themes of daily life and transform them into eloquent, poetic pop music. The quartet went mainstream in New Zealand and Australia with a unique sound which falls somewhere between the crafty, FM-friendly songwriting of Neil Finn and Dave Dobbyn and the edgy alternative guitar rock sound of the Clean, Chills, and Verlaines. "Dominion Road," "A Thing Well Made," and "She's Like a City" exhibit McGlashan at his best and the uncanny appropriation of the '60s psychedelic hit "Nature" is a standout track with a catchy refrain originally recorded by New Zealand pop godfathers the Fourmyula. The Mutton Birds' album was recorded in a low-tech 16-track studio and in a practice room by the band, giving it a unique lo-fi ambience that characterized the sound of New Zealand rock and comes highly recommended to fans of the Flying Nun scene. - AllMusic Review by Dean McFarlane

The Fortunate Sons "Karezza" 1987 + "Hammerhead" - 12'/45rpm EP 1987

THE BARRACUDAS CONNECTION! After making a third album, Endeavour to Persevere, the Barracudas disbanded at the end of '84.After The Barracudas disbanded in 1984, Robin Wills formed his own band with the Robinson bothers (located in Spain Lee Robinson was also in the A-10 & Sin City Six, he died in 1991 -RIP)...

...In 1985 the band recorded their first album "Rising" as a trio. Then Chris Wilson coming back from Sweden, joined them in 1986 for a new album "Karezza" also on Bam-Caruso records. They disbanded in 1988 during an italian tour.
After that, in 1990 R. Wills (with J. Gluck) revived the 'Cudas & recorded 'Wait For Everything' on the canadian indie Shake records. In 1992, Chris Wilson recorded a solo album, 'Random Centuries', in Spain. It's a shame that in 2009, the both albums have never been reissued on CD! - from sonsofthedolls.blogspot.

The Mutton Birds "Angel of Entry" 1997

MEGA RARE! - Limited Edition Live Acoustic Album - Only 1000 Copies Made - Gatefold Printed Cardboard Sleeve

Instead of the usual "we've put out four LPs, let's cash in with a live LP" routine, the Mutton Birds have a better idea: Why not release a sparkling, immaculate acoustic show (with usual bass and drums) in its entirety without overdubs instead? Recorded July 7, 1997, at London's intimate 12 Bar Club, this is a fantastic treat. Based around the then-current Envy of Angels, it's terrific to hear how well these lush songs stand up when pared to essentials, without the protective cover of Hugh Jones' comely production. In fact, they're drop-dead brilliant, their hooks jumping out at you like an over-affectionate dog happy to see you. Down, boy! And when the Muttons reach back to the equally brilliant second LP Salty (don't miss the worried "Esther," though they should have tried out "The Heater!") and the lesser first LP, the golden moments don't abate. Singer/songwriter Don McGlashan has a Midas touch where it comes to such mannered but beaming pop, with his so-likable, confident voice never wavering from pitch. "At a time like that you wouldn't care about your job/Or your mortgage/Or the fight you had with your wife," he sings with merry conviction on the Mutton Birds' "A Thing Well Made," and he might as well be talking about encountering the transformative power of music such as this, refreshed in new clothes. Certainly, the recording is so immediate, it makes you think you're in the third row, happily swaying to Envy's "Trouble With You." A truly good job, and a case of "wish I was there," Angle of Entry is easily ordered on the band's web site. With each release, they prove yet again they're a special band in a barren era! The Mutton Birds "Envy of Angels" 1996

Envy of Angels could have been recorded ten years earlier considering its invocation of the new south -- in particular the moodiness of Dumptruck -- not to mention similarities to more commercial guitar rock of the same period, such as that of 54-40…

...Perhaps it isn't a coincidence that Hugh Jones, who also worked with Dumptruck, produced Envy of Angels. He renders the Mutton Birds' guitar strum and jangle in more solemn than bright tones, which suits the sometimes poetic lyrics and unusual chord progressions. There are plenty of hooks in these songs, with "April" and "While You Sleep" being only two standouts. Despite the album's strengths, there is an obscure quality about Envy of Angels that will preserve the Mutton Birds' cult status while rewarding those listeners who find them. - AllMusic Review by Greg Adams

The Robins "West Coast Doo Wop" 1949-1961 - disc 2

Originally discovered and produced by Johnny Otis, The Robins were one of the first and certainly most influential of the teen orientated vocal groups to emerge from Los Angeles. Contains all of their chart hits and notable recordings from 1949-1961 including the R&B No. 1 'Double crossing Blues' featuring Little Esther and 'If It's So Baby'. This set sits nicely alongside Jasmine's Doo Wop Across America CD sets and is a must have for fans of the scene.
