Fifty Foot Combo "Caffeine" 2002

This CD is more intense and less intriguing than their amazing Evil A Go-Go release, at least to my ear. Much more go-go and much less melody, and more demanding. - Phil Dirt
Following their 3 successfull albums "Go hunting", "Evil a go go" and "Strike" the Monstrophonic Sound continues with this long awaited 4th release "Caffeine". Though this album includes their typical slowgrindin' & hardstompin' influences, Fifty Foot Combo presents it with a fresh twist. It's the combo sound we all know so well, yet with the music fixed on new and unexpected horizons. The release did not go unnotices, resulting in interviews on national radio and leading magazines... The Monstrophonic Sound is back! - kamikazerecords

Ferni & The Vascos "Summer Storm" 2015

This is my second installment of my immersion in Surf-Rock, with some new subgenres compared to my first...
...Surf in one of its most accelerated forms, captured in Summer Storm; the quarter-note bass drum rhythm characteristic of country but with melodies evoking Native Americans in Indigena; more of the classic surf in Looped Party, with a play on tonalities that lends richness and confusion in equal measure; the broken rhythm of Sinking and modal harmony, which gives it a certain sense of anguish, nuanced by the "squeals of the wah pedal," and finally the "soulful" groove of Dangling Hips, in the style of Black guitarists of the 60s like Freddie King.
Inspired by film noir, I propose a narrative about the order of the songs. Listen to this series of events with your imagination:
On a Pacific island, a few kilometers off the coast, a nighttime party (Looped Party) is being held on a yacht. In it, the guests dance naked in a lustful frenzy amidst curves and alcohol. One of the boys is mesmerized by the girl's hips, as she dances to this song with her back to him (Dangling Hips). But at the same time, inland, something is happening. The indigenous people are worried about their harvest; it has barely rained in over a month, and the tribe's great magician is going to do something to change this desperate situation: a rain dance (Indígena). With his efforts and the tribe's dances, clouds begin to appear in the sky, which soon precipitate into a furious summer storm (Summer Storm), very unfortunate for the yacht's guests, who begin to lose stability until the waves become so aggressive and unbearable that they spit everyone off the yacht, who are now struggling between life and death (Sinking).
I hope you enjoy this album! Thanks for visiting and your contributions are much appreciated. Best regards! - bandcamp

The Tell Tale Hearts "The Tell Tale Hearts" 1985 + "The Now Sound Of The Tell Tale Hearts" 1985

The Tell-Tale Hearts evolved from an earlier band called the Mystery Machine, featuring Mark Z (later of Manual Scan and the Shambles). Their first gig in September 1983, a yard party at 5266 Cobb Street (off Clairemoint Mesa Boulevard), was also the first public show played by the Gravedigger V (though they were called the Shamen at the time).
“They had never seen anything like them in San Diego, and what they saw began to shatter the boring, stultifying sameness of the local music scene into a million pieces. The wild-eyed singer snarled and leapt about like a monkey, all the while shaking a pair of maracas and banging on a cow bell, wine bottle or beer can. The drummer hid behind a relic of a kit and pounded his tom-toms like they were tribal war drums. The tall, red-haired guitarist snaked about on stage, by turns stroking and stabbing at his instrument. The organ player, his hair completely covering his face, kicked at his amplifier and rolled on the ground, wrestling with a harmonica...

Hal Blaine "Psychedelic Percussion" 1967

Hal was the drummer's drummer man! He was there all the time, but you probably never knew it, although you certainly heard him! He played percussion on records by The Beach Boys, The Mamas And Papas, Sonny & Cher. He was a BIG part of that famous 'Wall Of Sound' that made Phil Spector so famous! He even helped get Ol' Blue Eyes to his only No. 1 with his drumming on 'Strangers In The Night'! Album features terrific observations by noted writer and broadcaster, Austin Powell, and has great original artwork specially created for this unique release! Harkit. 2005.
Calling Hal Blaine a drummer is like calling Elvis Presley a singer. Blaine may not be a household name, but trust me, if your thirty or over, you have heard tons of his work. And there is tons. In the 1960s and 1970s, if you were a vocal group in LA and did not have a permanent band, chances were you were using Hal on drums. The Fifth Dimension, The Mamas and the Papas, the Association, the Carpenters, The Monkees, Tommy Roe: Blaine has a body of work so big, I just gave you a pinky nail. Turn on any oldies station for an hour, and it is almost a sure thing you will hear Blaine at work. And if you are an old FM guru, listen now to any of the above music.
You may not like the groups, but the drumming is top tier. Listen to Blaine blaze with Joe Osborn on bass on the 5Ds "Let The Sunshine In," and in a different context, his playing could be a funk jazz jam worthy of any progressive band from the era. Psychedelic Percussion is all the proof you need that Blaine was far hipper than the top forty hits he banged out all the way to the bank. This `1967 Dunhill album in a sense seems like a novelty album, but I prefer the word project.
The drums and sound effects are a product of era, but LISTEN to this guy. His flexibility, his speed, his light but potent touch shows him to be one of the best around, and not just in terms
of skill. He is tuneful, melodic, and has an incredible feel for his drums as a MUSICAL instrument, not a percussive one. We can all as listeners and musicans and music writers learn a hell of a lot from ANY record Hal Blaine played on, but if your not ready to disect the finer points of 1960s LA top forty, although you should be, start with Psychedelic Percusion. - By Bill Your 'Free Form FM Handi Cyber Print DJ ... Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater Featuring Los Straitjackets "Rock 'N' Roll City" 2003

The association seems unusual at first glance, but Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater's roots rock and blues backed by Los Straitjackets' twangy surf results in a potent combination. Other than the participants' colorful choice of headgear, this joint venture urges Clearwater to his most rocking and uninhibited studio performances, while expanding his stylistic boundaries...
...Never a straight bluesman, the Chief's Chuck Berry tendencies are well established. But even though he tosses off another in a long line of Berry-esque rockers with a "Johnny B. Goode"-heavy "Hillbilly Blues," this album explores his non-blues roots more thoroughly. The opening cover of "You're Humbuggin' Me" kicks things off with a blast of '50s Little Richard abandon. Elsewhere, he moves into spaghetti Western, reverbed instrumental/rockabilly waters -- no doubt provoked by the Straitjackets -- on "Monkey Paw." Clearwater also tosses in a few Ray Charles-styled R&B '50s nuggets in "I Love You" and "Before This Song Is Over," both originals that sound like authentic lost gems due partially to Dennis Taylor's tough tenor sax. New Orleans rhythms rule on Clearwater's cover of Fats Domino's "Let the Four Winds Blow," and he hits an easygoing rockabilly vibe on "Midnight Groove," another horn and guitar-driven burner. "Back Down to Earth" also mixes swamp soul with country blues in an intoxicating blend. Closing with "Good Times Are Coming," a six-minute gospel-tinged slow blues with only a lonely organ as accompaniment, brings Clearwater full circle and ends the album on its mellowest note. The guitarist sounds jovial and inspired throughout, trading licks with Los Straitjackets' Eddie Angel and Danny Amis and singing with an upbeat affability that makes it sound as if he's in your living room. With its diverse menu and crackling performances, Rock 'n' Roll City demonstrates that Eddy Clearwater excels at far more than his existing catalog indicates. - Review by Hal Horowitz

Ferni & The Vascos "Strings And Waves" 2014

It all started with the idea of doing a surf music exercise for my guitar lessons (www.cuerdaxcuerda.com). I've always liked surf rock because I'm a guitarist, and it's a genre where the guitar plays an undeniable role...
...I thought I should really immerse myself in the style because I have a lot of respect for it, so I started listening to online radio stations dedicated exclusively to surfing at home day and night. And why not? I let myself be seduced by fanzines, festivals, photographs, fashion, and so many other things that contribute to creating a unique image of this genre.
And a single exercise to explain such a richness of rhythms, harmonies, and subgenres no longer seemed enough. I listened to song after song and wrote down each new rhythm in a notebook... After more than 30 scores of melodies inspired by everything I'd heard, from the most classic to the most modern, from the time when surf wasn't even called surfing as such until the latest revivals, I found myself with enough material to record at least an EP.
Because that's what Surf-Rock is, a style that continually draws from its sources, that reinvents itself but never abandons the keys that make it a genre (the twang, the tremolo, the drum rolls, that macabre echoing laugh...), and those who continually invoke it lack the ego of someone who wants to invent the unheard of, merely pay tribute to the great Reverberating God with a few more melodies. This is my contribution. And may it endure as it has been doing since the 60s! - bandcamp

Burning Bones with Kim Fowley "Grease" 2011

In 1975, after completing the LP Animal God of the Streets, Fowley returned to his Svengali role by assembling the notorious Runaways, a teenage hard rock girl group featuring a young Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie...
...Designed as equal parts manufactured novelty and bid for female rock & roll domination, the group didn't sell many records in their original run but proved to be massively influential, and after the original group splintered, Fowley even launched another Runaways in the '80s. (Another girl group, the Orchids, was his idea as well, as were the Hollywood Stars, conceived as the L.A. answer to the New York Dolls.) Fowley became a mover and shaker in the early days of the Los Angeles punk scene, creating yet another manufactured band, Venus and the Razorblades, and staging "New Wave Nights" at Hollywood clubs, one of which spawned the early live album from the Germs, Germicide. - by Jason Anken

The Gravedigger V "All Black and Hairy" 1984 (Voxx Rec.)

They've all moved on or disappeared without a trace, yet the special moment of crazed energy is captured on vinyl for us to dig forever.
While the Pandoras were in the studio, this band of San Diego cavemen was on hand to make sure none of the girls' insatiable appetites went unmet. Having impressed us with their authentic teen attitude, Leighton and the boys soon found themselves back in the same studio to make their classic album, "All Black and Hairy". Whether tackling standards like "Night of the Phantom" or snarling out originals like "She's a Cur" and "Stoneage Stomp", it was clear that this band had an atavistic genius unmatched in any decade.
Foster Child: Veterans of the mid-80s garage revival will probably remember these guys as epitomizing the snarly, snotty fuck-you attitude of the best and most pissed-off garage band music. Their first album remains a classic of its time. To many it may sound terribly dated but there are those of us to whom these sounds will always remain timeless. For those of you who've never heard these guys, think of an even snottier version of The Cynics 1st album and you're definitely on the right track. Whatcha got here are the first album. It's hard for me to be objective about this (and why should I be?) as this kind of noise is, has and always will be what keeps me going when so many other things in life have turned to shit.

Hal Blaine & The Young Cougars "Deuces, T's, Roadsters & Drums" 1963

When drummer Hal Blaine cut Deuces... his late '63 debut, he gathered pals in Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew and unleashed the most fuel-injected hot rod anthems this side of the NHRA Winternationals. Punctuated with real sounds of vintage funny cars and competition coupes, Blaine's rubber-burning opus features 10 bonus tracks for a total of 22.
Hal Blaine was one of the most innovative and gifted session drummers ever to come down the pike, at least the pike that was the L.A. studio scene in the '60s and '70s. Being a talented man with friends in high places, it was perhaps only natural that he managed to record a solo album or two. However, his career as a highly used session drummer and percussionist didn't leave him a whole lot of time to develop as a songwriter or singer, so it's not surprising that his solo albums are nothing to write home about, including this one. Deuces, "T's," Roadsters & Drums is the better of the two albums Blaine recorded, and it also contains the most original material. The songs are solid surf instrumentals that Blaine mostly co-wrote with album producer Lee Hazlewood, no slouch himself in the surf music composing department. In this case, the surf genre appears in the guise of the car genre, and every song on the main portion of the disc is preceded by loud drag-racing sound effects taken from the RCA library. Bad move -- the music would be much more listenable without them. It's jaunty, catchy stuff, if not terribly memorable. Blaine's percussion work lends a touch of exotica to the surf-and-drag twang of the guitars. The album sounds at times like a cross between Duane Eddy and Martin Denny. There are also several bonus tracks recorded at a different session, and they're better than many of the main album tracks. There's an R&B flavor to the latter part of the CD, with a female vocal chorus on some of the songs. And at least the extra tracks are free of car-racing sound effects. - Review by Mary Grady

"Surfer's Mood" Vol 1 - 1989

Some really nice and rare tunes - incl. Dick Dale.
Some tasty gems, some easily available on CD tracks, and some real obscuros. There are some tracks that make no sense at all including here, since they have been available from original session tapes on CD, some for a long time. A good cross section and a vital slab of otherwise unavailable. - Phil Dirt
What Phil Dirt seems to have forgotten about availably of some of these songs is that the collection was released in '89 and none of these songs were available at the time this of release. "The Sore Losers" 2018 (Original Soundtrack)

Reissue of an out-of-time AND ahead-of-its time garage rock soundtrack to the typically out-of-his-mind Mike McCarthy (JMM) movie SORE LOSERS. The film is full of aliens, comic books, rednecks, zombies, boobs, gals, gals fighting, and rock n roll. Starring the Oblivians' Jack Oblivian, with Guitar Wolf, Mike Maker, the deliciously curvy D'Lana Tunnell, and a guest appearance by exploitation master David F Friedman himself...
...Anyone who has seen his movies can attest to the fact that Mike McCarthy always over delivers. Sore Losers is as good / bad an example as any. Whole soundtracks would be filled out around just one of the acts on this thing - case in point - Greg Oblivian doing a toy instrument version of the much-loved "Bad Man" that is worth the price of the record by itself. Plus The Gories / Dirtbombs' Mick Collins, The Makers, Jack Oblivian himself, and the mighty GUITAR WOLF!
"Do You Like Lo-Fi With Your Sci-Fi?" - JMM
You've got New Orleans garage/ frat kings Royal Pendletons. You've got Jeffrey Evans of the Gibson Bros with his 68 Comeback, also featuring Jack Taylor. Now Jack Taylor is the most amazing guitar player ever. And by amazing, I mean fucked up. His guitar tone started with the legendarily messed-up solo in the Velvet Underground's "I Heard Her Call My Name" and then added 4 fuzz pedals to it, creating MODERN ART! RIP Jack Taylor. Listen to him! You've got Nick Diablo of Viva L'American Death Ray Music. You've got more...
Jack Oblivian, The Drags, The Makers, Tim Feleppa, Guitar Wolf, Gasoline... I mean, check out the track listing. This is quality 90s garage rock, still raw and vital as ever.
This re-release coincides with Mike's new edit of SORE LOSERS, and is co-released by Chaputa! Records in Portugal. Southern Sci-Fi trash has never looked or sounded so good!

John York & Kim Fowley "West Coast Revelation" 2010

Kim and John might have common ancestry as John’s actual name is John York Foley and they’re both of Irish origin (Cork, Ireland).
Multi-instrumentalist John York was in one of the most interesting line-ups of the Byrds in the 1968-69 period and was a major part of the classic BALLAD OF EASY RIDER album. He's been working and recording every since, following his muse and creating a unique body of work. Kim Fowley is the brilliant, larger-than-life songwriter/singer/producer/underground recording artist/cultural commentator with a devoted cult following (including me). Interestingly, though York was in the Byrds and Fowley wrote songs for the Byrds, Fowley's songs entered the band AFTER York left, when Kim co-wrote a number of tunes with York's replacement in the Byrds, the late Skip Battin. So this is not any kind of reunion, but a meeting of minds from men who have walked many of the same west-coast roads.
Basically, it's a series of new Fowley-York songs sung by York, done in solo acoustic fashion, with Fowley and York talking about York's career and the west-coast scene over the years. Fowley is a superb interviewer, not afraid to push the conversation along or nudge York in a direction Fowley finds interesting. Fowley has always had the ability to size up a scene or a style in a few well-chosen phrases, and this skill along with York's amazing memory of obscure details from 45 years ago makes the album a treasure. And the songs are fantastic! With York's music and Fowley's lyrics, it's one anthem after another, and some of them are truly moving, such as "Flower Girls." We tend to think of Fowley as an edgy artist, which he certainly is, but he can write some beautiful and classic songs (and surely, he's made much more money on his songwriting over the years, I'd guess, than his performing, as brilliant as he is as a performer), as one can hear on albums such as HOTEL INSOMNIA, INTERNATIONAL HEROES, and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.
York's guitar work and heartfelt vocals fit these songs like a glove, and for me, this is one of the best releases of the year. The John York-Kim Fowley duo was a total surprise for me, and anyone who's ever liked the work of either man will adore this. Those not heavily into 60s cultural history and who are not fans of either man might perhaps not pick up on the album's charms.
Thanks, guys, for this wonderful project! - W. Shute

Fifty Foot Combo "Evil A Go-Go" 2000

Meanwhile, back in Belgium...
The story of FIFTY FOOT COMBO is quite unique for a Belgian band, thrillingly hot and exciting at the same time. Since the starting up of the band, they could count on a very loyal and ever growing fanbase. Soon (late 9ties) came their first full album "GO HUNTING" . The album got praised by any self-respecting surfhead, hailed by even the most critical garagepimp. The 'Combo got launched into the international underground-top of vintagemusic fuzz.
As their reputation kept on growing, live appearances multiplied, and the birth of the so called MONSTROPHONIC sound was a fact ! The power emerging from their livegigs was until then only a rare phenomenon which very few had witnessed before seeing the 'Combo at work. Garage, surf fuzz, exotica, horror and thunder make the 'Combo to be a very infectious experience you'll never forget. It is an undisputable fact that Fifty Foot Combo is one of Belgium's five hottest live-acts, and for some unknown reason they manage to keep on getting more impressive. Smooth but trashy, wild and exciting but stylish...
In the meantime FFC toured all over Europe, and performed bonecrushing concerts on some of the most prestigious stages on the continent. Top-range albums such as "EVIL A GOGO" , "STRIKE" and "CAFFEINE" confirm one by one the general addiction these cats can cause. And still, they keep on burning rubber and spreading their instrumental GoGo sounds all over the planet to anyone in need of some serious Monstrophonic Mayhem. They are a highly regarded guest in of Europe's most fashionable circles! - http://www.wreckingpit.com/

Sacred Cowboys "Trouble From Providence" 1988 (Citadel, Australia)

Sacred Cowboys are an Australian rock band active live throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and 2000's. They began playing inner city Melbourne in early 1982. Gary Gray and Mark Ferrie thought of the name after watching "The Groovy Guru", an episode of the classic TV comedy series Get Smart. In it, the Groovy Guru and his rock band, the Sacred Cows, use psychedelic music to control the minds of young people. (The same episode was the inspiration for a Hoodoo Gurus song, "In The Echo Chamber" and Painters and Dockers covered Groovy Guru's "Kill Kill Kill".)...
...Within six months, the Sacred Cowboys signed with Mushroom Records / White Label and recorded the "Nothing Grows In Texas" single. After their performance of the song on television pop show Countdown, Molly Meldrum said: "this is the worst group I've seen in five years", a title the band wore with perverse pride.
The Cowboys Mark I also released a second single, a cover of Alex Chilton's "Bangkok", a self-titled EP on the White Label, a self-titled album on french label New Rose Rds, and a live / demo compilation named after a Rolling Stones cover, "We Love You" on ManMade Rds.
After reforming in 1987, the Sacred Cowboys signed to Germany's Normal records and released the classic "Trouble From Providence" album. "Hell Sucks" was the hit from this album and became the Cowboys signature tune...

Miles Davis "We Want Miles" 1982

Davis's second recording since ending his six-year retirement was one of his best of the 1980s...
...Unlike his bands from the 1970s, this particular unit leaves plenty of space and plays much more melodically. Guitarist Mike Stern lets loose some fury, but electric bassist Marcus Miller is not reluctant to walk now and then in a straight-ahead fashion, drummer Al Foster and percussionist Mino Cinelu are tasteful, and Bill Evans gets in a few good spots on soprano. As for Davis, he was gradually regaining his earlier form. This double LP is highlighted by "Back Seat Betty," a side-long investigation of "My Man's Gone Now" and two versions of Davis's childlike "Jean Pierre." - Review by Scott Yanow
