In 1963 Fantasy hired legendary LA production team Cliff Goldsmith and Ray Shanklin to furnish artists and masters for their R&B subsidiary. Over the next two years the team would produce a small but perfectly formed catalogue of classy, soulful blues of the highest quality, showcased for the first time on "Diggin’ Gold – A Galaxy Of West Coast Blues". Of the acts Goldsmith and Shanklin brought to Galaxy, by the far the most successful was Little Johnny Taylor, whose 1963 single ‘Part Time Love’ was a huge hit in that era and has since become a blues standard. Taylor’s prolific release schedule has been anthologised elsewhere, but with "Gold Diggin’" we are proud to present seven tracks by this exemplary blues stylist that are totally new to CD, including three titles previously unissued on any format. Also featured on the compilation are blues stalwarts such as Clay Hammond and Saunders King, along with a handful of more obscure acts such as Del Cunningham, Joe Johnson, Billy Keene and Rob Robinson. All these singers are staunchly in the same gutsy gospel-blues mould as Taylor, and similarly, are backed by the jazzy horn charts, stinging guitar and meaty rhythm section of Shanklin’s fabulous accompaniment. Many of these original Galaxy singles are also exceptionally rare. All tracks were cut in Los Angeles 1963-65, with this being the debut on CD for 22 of the 24 sides. Meticulous research in the Fantasy vault has meant the original session tapes have been utilised throughout, making this a feast for the ear of any discerning blues aficionado.

The excellent Left Banke collection is long out of print and now sells for good money!This New York group pioneered "Baroque'n'Roll" in the '60s with their mix of pop/rock and grand, quasi-classical arrangements and melodies. Featuring teenage prodigy Michael Brown as keyboardist and chief songwriter, the group scored two quick hits with "Walk Away Renee" (number five) and "Pretty Ballerina (number 15). Chamber-like string arrangements, Steve Martin's soaring, near-falsetto lead vocals, and tight harmonies that borrowed from British Invasion bands like the Beatles and the Zombies were also key elements of the Left Banke sound. Though their two hits are their only well-remembered efforts, their debut album (Walk Away Renee / Pretty Ballerina) was a strong, near-classic work that matched the quality of their hit singles in songwriting and production. Chicago Soul At It’s Very Best!Gene Chandler is remembered by the rock & roll audience almost solely for the classic novelty and doo wop-tinged soul ballad "Duke of Earl"; the unforgettable opening chant of the title leading the way, the song was a number one hit in 1962. He's esteemed by soul fans as one of the leading exponents of the '60s Chicago soul scene, along with Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. Born Eugene Dixon, he was a member of the doo wop group the Dukays and "Duke of Earl" was actually a Dukays recording; Dixon was renamed Gene Chandler and the single bore his credit as a solo singer. Chandler never approached the massive pop success of that chart-topper (although he occasionally entered the Top 20), but he was a big star with the R&B audience with straightforward mid-tempo and ballad soul numbers in the mid-'60s, many of which were written by Curtis Mayfield and produced by Carl Davis. Taylor first entered the studio as a member of the Cadets and Jacks, a Los Angeles R&B vocal group with two names that recorded for Modern. By the late '50s, Taylor was signed to Ebb, and a myriad of other imprints soon followed (notably Duke, where he waxed his first version of the sugary ballad "Be Ever Wonderful"), Okeh (his sides for the Columbia subsidiary were done in Chicago and Nashville), and Ronn, where he spent nearly a decade. Combining '60s beat sounds and '80s hardcore-metal, Los Brujos was pointed out as an experimental group. In addition, their theatrical performances, where musicians created a special atmosphere around them, made Los Brujos a very special rock act. Daniel Melero produced their first album, called Fin De Semana Salvaje, in 1992; soon, their song "Kanishka" hit the charts. In 1993, San Cipriano was released, followed by 1995's Guerra De Nervios, which had contributions by Gustavo Cerati and Juana La Loca's dummer Aitor Graña. The band announced its breakup in 1998. The king of romantic Chicago soul, Tyrone Davis' warm, aching vulnerability and stylish class made him especially popular with female soul fans during a lengthy hitmaking run that lasted throughout the '70s. Best known for the classics "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turn Back the Hands of Time," Davis was a versatile baritone singer who could handle everything from pop-soul to funk to bluesy chitlin-circuit R&B, but smooth soul was his true bread and butter. More emotionally complex and reflective than "On Fyre", this could well be one of the most mature garage rock records ever recorded. That doesn't mean that energy and excitement are sacrificed for dour introspection -- far from it. This is a total joy from start to finish, and a great place to hang out after a thousand or so spins of On Fyre."The Lyres were and are a band basically comprised of Jeff Conolly and anybody else he felt like playing music with for a while and then firing. He started out in Boston singing with punk/60's band DMZ in the mid-to-late '70's while working at local rib house Buzzy's Bar-B-Q. The band got signed to Sire Records during the initial post-punk/new wave upheavel, but their first and only release was horribly produced by Flo and Eddie of the Turtles(!) ("it sounded like their bellys were pushing up the bass drum faders and nothing else") and the band disintegrated shortly afterward. Jeff recruited a couple of the guys from DMZ and recorded a break-out single on Ace of Hearts Records, a local label founded by Richard W. 70' s punk/New wave survivors The Droogs failed to capitalise on their mid 80's neo-garage success but continued to make great albums. This one from 1991 is produced by Paul B Cutler of The Dream Syndicate fame - who also contributed to the album by playing guitar on some of the tracks. It also features Chris Cacavas of Green On Red and the other main Dream Syndicate member, Steve Wynn !! The absolute highlight on the album is a fantastic cover version of the all time West Coast US folk/rock classic Morning Dew with some great biting guitar work !!! This CD edition also features one unreleased bonus cut. from freak emporium
