"He Put The Bomp! In The Bomp" - Greg Shaw 2007
Greg Shaw wasn't a musician, but he had a greater positive impact on rock & roll than many people who've put out dozens of records…
...Shaw was a record collector and passionate rock & roll fan who founded one of the first rock fanzines, Mojo Navigator, that in time evolved into his magazine Bomp, which focused on the kind of real rock & roll most major magazines ignored. Shaw also wrote for other publications, worked as an A&R man for several record labels, and managed the Flamin' Groovies for a spell, and in the '70s, he put his money where his ideals were and launched his own independent label, Bomp Records, and released a steady stream of classic garage rock, punk, and power pop recordings that continues to this day. In the fall of 2004, heart failure claimed Shaw's life at the age of 55, and He Put the Bomp in the Bomp is a compilation album that pays homage to Shaw's work and his guiding influence. Since he didn't make records of his own, it isn't a tribute album in the usual sense, and it doesn't focus strictly on music that was released by Bomp over the years. Instead, He Put the Bomp features 23 acts who play the kind of raw, heartfelt, and passionate rock & roll that Shaw championed, each covering a different classic tune. Some of the combinations seem pretty obvious -- the Plimsouls grooving on the Easybeats' "Good Times" or Nikki Corvette tearing into the Pleasure Seekers' "What a Way to Die" -- while others are a bit more cryptic, such as the Morning After Girls transforming Kim Fowley's "The Trip" into a slow, narcotic drift, and the Warlocks closing the show with "Hey Man" by Spacemen 3. But the guiding principle seems to have been to get the kind of bands Greg Shaw liked and have them play songs Shaw would dig, and thankfully nearly everyone here hits that nail on the head. Nikki Sudden and Captain Sensible deliver a surprisingly effective acoustic version of Iggy Pop's "Kill City," Outrageous Cherry's cover of the Gants' "I Wonder" is simply luminous, the Black Keys transform the Cramps' "I Can't Find My Mind" into something even more messed-up than the original, "Him or Me" by the Dukes of Earl is pure frat rock bliss, and "Red Temple Prayer (Two Headed Dog)" finds the Barracudas making the most of a great Roky Erickson tune. He Put the Bomp In the Bomp is an eclectic set that covers a fair amount of stylistic ground, but every track in one way or another speaks of a deep love for rock & roll, and it's not hard to imagine that Greg Shaw would have gotten a pretty big kick out of it.

The Men from... BEYOND!! "Surf Solaris" 2013
We invite you to the lunar beach party of the aeon baybeeeeee
My first exposure to the L.A. punk scene was through the soundtrack to the 1984 movie Repo Man. This scene would be documented much more extensively in the movie The Decline of Western Civilization, but there is some overlap. I watched Repo Man when it aired sometime in the 80’s on late night USA Network when I was in my early teens and it opened a whole world up to me–junk culture, beer swilling angry punks and aliens. The soundtrack has the amazing Iggy Pop theme song and bands like The Plugz, Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, Fear and Suicidal Tendencies. - by Michael RoederMar 25, 2013

I Fat Tones "Grand Canyon" 2015 - 12"/45rpm EP
Though they've been playing shows for a good while now, I believe this is the first release from this Italian trio (with an occasional 4th member joining for the trumpet)...
...They have made it clear on their album and their facebook page that you should not follow the coyote, which I assume means you will fall off a cliff and into the Grand Canyon. I wonder if this is the famous roadrunner-chasing coyote. As for the actual music, trad surf with a sense of humor. A lil' bit of shredding in "Exotica" and a bit more of a striptease sound on "Yes Master" but it's pretty bright and upbeat throughout.. - Submitted by Hunter on Thu, 12/17/2015

Dirty Fuse "Lost Riders" 2010
Lost Riders is Dirty Fuse's first release. It consists of four tracks that were recorded when the band was a trio (Duda Victor on guitar, Chris Kogios on drums and Panagiotis Kotsiopoulos on bass)...
...The 7" vinyl was released one year after the recordings took place and while the band was already a quintet (Manos Kisamitakis on sax, Kostas Bakoulas on guitar and John Drake on bass). The official release date was on December 14 2010 and the release live & party that took place at "After Dark" venue downtown Athens was a total knock-out. 300 of these beauties were printed and their owners are already in the Libro d`Oro of vinyl collectors as the record was sold out six months after its official release. Surf`s Up !!! - bandcamp

Thee Sturgeons "Freshwater Freakout" 2016
Instrumental surf/spy tunes from the beaches of Lake Superior.
This looks like the debut EP from Minnesota's Thee Sturgeons, and they have a lot of fun with it. The most straight-forward surf is "Giant Squid Attack" which already has some fun tradeoffs between guitar parts, but tracks like "Sand Dune" is where I think they're really coming from. Surrounding its middle-eastern flair, is a surprisingly loud fuzzy bass bubbling into a weirdo bellydancing beat with farfisa hovering all around. "Kimchi Gammi" takes that same off-kilter dance groove to a more tiki Pet-Soundsy setting, but even that gets delightfully-rudely interrupted by some rude fuzz guitar. This is a group where I hear no heirarchy between instruments, and somehow it all stays together for something not only listenable but fresh. - Submitted by Hunter on Fri, 03/04/2016

Mariachi Death Squad "Rituals Of The Deep" 2018
Mariachi Death Squad are a reverb crashin', point breakin' power surf trio. The experience of Mariachi Death Squad is akin to that of the Fujiwara Effect where, after a delicate and beautiful dance of nature, everything is then BLOWN AWAY.
MDS are filthy, sweaty, brainswomping surf goodness. Rituals is a wild journey, rocking oot one minute, droning the next. Day of the Dead is a crushing beast, a real arm swinger and face splitter! Recommend seeing them live. Have heard some new tracks live and cant wait to hear them when theyre commited to the tape asylum. - SLOBBIE COLTRANE

"Do The 45!" Vol. 1089 (2025)
Super fun collection of soul, blues, R&B, instro, and rock 'n' roll from the original 45's. (From my record collection.)
It's just me having fun with my 45's and whatever random record I pull out of the boxes. I will try to give both sides of the 45 unless one side is dull, unbearable or unplayable. I hope you enjoy. (Gyro1966)

"Rumours From The Harem" 2019
Open Sesame!
The Arabian nights, Ali Baba and the Fourty Thieves, Aladdin...these exotic tales and locations have always been a great source of inspiration to the occident. Not only did Hollywood exploit this exotica, the mood of this culture seeped into the horns and arrangements of 1940's and 50's jazz. Once again, hear the sweet sounds of Armenian Charles Ganimian and Eddie "the Sheik" Kochak scratch and drum you back down to Manhattan's downstairs hideaway bars, and across that mighty bridge to faraway Brooklyn. Bump and sway again in those smoke filled rooms.
Now rub that lamp and make a wish! Enter the Casbah at your own risk...

The Charades "Plays Exiting Rock Instrumental Hits" 2021
A surf-rock band from Finland...
Just as the tradition of surf rock continues today, so does the very similar tradition of Rautalanka continue in Finland. What especially impresses me is that despite how thin and glassy a lot of the 60's rautalanka can be, modern groups seem to all be very slick and prettty. Based on the samples I've heard, you can say the same here.

Healing Gems "Healing Gems" 2017 - 12"/45rpm EP
Las Arañas del Neptuno "Headin' for a Barrel Bash" 2022
The Buckaroos "The Best Of The Buckaroos" 2007
Spotlighting the flying fingers of Buckaroos guitar-picking whiz Don Rich, the full-bodied pedal steel of Tom Brumley and the rocksteady rhythm of bassist Doyle Holly backed by the solid beat of drummers Willie Cantu and Jerry Wiggins, this Buckaroos smorgasbord is the perfect introduction to the band that created the Bakersfield Sound behind country music Hall of Famer Buck Owens...
...Here's the definitive example of their forward-thinking style – an electrified honky-tonk sound that wowed the crowds wherever they played. This set clearly defines what made the vibrant Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos compelling enough to grab the country charts by the throat in the mid-'60s and not let go, while scoring plenty of cross-over pop-chart success at the same time.

Los Frenéticos "Teletransportación" 2019
Los Frenéticos, those four handsome guys from Argentina! They are travelers around the world meanwhile. And you can hear this open minded feeling in each song. "Teletransportación" is their 3rd full album and they did it with a lot of soul and love and dedication for our well beloved surf music...
...It starts very smooth and slow but very strong with "La Luz Mala". "Last Train To Ozalj" includes super nice surfy melodies full of tragic and beautiness the same time, a middle part full of suspense. "Palmira" gives you a lightful summer feeling. "Heat Wave" rides a sunny faster wave, gives me the feeling riding a perfect wave. "El Vagabundo" is a super nice cover of Los Gatos (Argentine rock group of the late 1960s,). All in all, for me it sounds like a song by Los Frenéticos. "La Cautiva" is simply made for seducing girls, take your clothes off and hear surf music together.
"Teletransportación" starts with a great intro full of suspense! Then it rolls into nice spy like melody surf track. "Magnetizado" is a simply nice surf song with catchy picking on the melody.. "Espectáculo Hora Cero" shows again the perfect musicianship of the whole band. A lot of breaks, and changing moods and instruments. "Si Me Quieres" surfs also on the lower tides, gives me a flavor of 70´s sunshine hippie mood, haha. "La Furia" shows again the talent of this...
