Got the Record Collector Deep Purple special delivered yesterday (two copies actually, one is on the way to Japan as we speak). This is the best Purple special that I have seen, a couple of factual errors aside it really is a good read. Also, some good shots. 116 pages all in all, Purple Family only (except for a couple of ads). On the side I spotted these words from Ian Gillan, “Buy real records in real shops, or I´ll come round your house and scream at your mother”. The editor, Joel McIver was involved in the Glenn Hughes biography a few years ago. Cool foreword by Purple fanatic Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth fame. Lovely.

Large format Swedish publication Bild Journalen, issue 21 1964. The image of Audrey actually continues on the back as well (it was one of the cool things they were known for). This was the biggest youth magazine of the 1960s in this country. I have a select few in the old collection. Some pictures from the then current movie “Paris When It Sizzles” on the back plus a small mention inside.

When guitarist Mayto and singer Uyu left Hagane one had to wonder where they would pop up next. While Uyu had already been busy in Babymetal cover band Dizzymetal (which is still an ongoing project), Mayto next appeared with a new band that featured Uyu, Mana Diagram. So far, this outfit has done concerts, released singles and a full album digitally, and put out some videos. They are building up a reputation from scratch, but they are far too good to stay in digital limbo. This is a band that should have a record contract and the backing of people that believe in them. The band consists of Mayto, Uyu and three guys, so they are not an all female band (which is all the rage right now). Mayto and Uyu has credibility from their history with Hagane, they have succeeded before. The current Hagane is quite successful and have built on what was before. Starting a new band is hard but I know talent when I see it and I want this band to gain some well deserved traction. Their first album, “Moonlight Desire” is out there and I really want a physical copy. There may be information that I am not aware of here, it is difficult to find out what is going on. I can see that they are busy, that they are out there. For now, I just want to send some positive vibes out there. I see you.

Formed in 1987, Japanese rock trio Ningen Isu has (to my knowledge) released 24 studio albums, of which this one, “Shin Seinen” came out in 2019. Now this particular album features the song “Heartless Scat”, a song that has a video for it that has notched up over 16,000,000 views on YouTube. Enough even for me to notice, and I did love the relentless riffing and the dark lyrics of the song when I first heard it. Took me long enough to get the CD, but here we are. I have to say that these guys are heavy, it just thunders on like a division of panzer tanks moving in and it might just owe a little something in attitude from early Black Sabbath. Just a tad, it has that riff thing and the attitude. I just loved it and this means that I have to go for more of this band. This journey starts right now. I suggest you check them out.

KOIAI

Koiai released their first Blu-ray “1st Live In Japan” independently back in May 2024. I have seen it now but I do not have a copy. Absolutely brilliant band live, and this was early days. We are talking about Toto level musicianship. Somebody needs to sign this band up for the international market right now.

JAPANESE CONCERT SCENE

I just love how bands are joining up for concerts and here we have another hot ticket with Undying Words having asked Gungire, Mellows (with guitarist Sally, whom I interviewed on this blog recently) and Bridear to join them for a gig at the Shibuya Cyclone club in Tokyo on June 13.

When Ugly Is Cool

The Italians built the ugliest aircrafts of WWII, but looking back on them now they are quite charming. Italeri has released some of these and I have to say that this MC.200 Saetta in scale 1/48 is pretty cool.

Glenn Hughes released his soulful rock masterpiece “Soul Mover” in January 2005. I think he would have been a very happy man if this one had catched on with the masses but no suck luck. And it is sad too, because this is a wonderful record and his singing is just unbelievably good, as always. All in all, his solo work is underrated, mainly because he missed the train. He missed the 1980s. He could have had hits back then. Later on, the business had changed. Having said that, his solo albums are all great. All of them. On these images I showcase the CD and a promotional postcard from the label. I will insert the card into the Deep Purple Family collection now, in the binder that covers the period.

Saki joined Japanese outfit Like-an-Angel a year ago and they have been doing concerts. Now they have product coming out in the shape of a debut EP titled “Angel Beside You” on June 4. Anything with Saki is going to be good so this is interesting. Check out the video for this song on YouTube.

This Led Zeppelin bootleg is cool because it is the last ever show they did. I have very little information about this LP, but it is kind of cool from a fans perspective. Old school rockers will collect bootlegs with their favourite bands. I wonder if there will be bootlegs with the big bands of today 50 years or so from today?

Spotted these two collectors items on the trip to town a few days ago, 26 page books/magazines about aircrafts and indian culture. The kids were supposed to collect images and add them to stories inside. These are books five and six in this series. Translated to Swedish by Gösta Knutsson, whom would go on to become one of the most celebrated authors for childrens books in Sweden. The previous owner, and I guess it was somebody that kept these for all these years, completed these books back in the day, making these just a little bit special. I guess the images came from some magazine back in the day, so kids got to collect them. Not sure how many books they published, but at least eight of them, judging by an ad in these editions. I remember that kids had similar books (more pages) in the early 1970s with famous football and hockey stars. I had them, now I wonder why on earth I got rid of them? I see them on auction sites now and they are not cheap.
