Nice ad from the Time To Rock Festival guys in Sweden, highlighting the Japanese acts Murasaki and Bow Wow in a separate ad on their official platforms. Good thinking.

Well, this is interesting. Sabaton are set to premiere a film titled (as was the trek itself) “The Tour To End All Tours” at cinemas on October 11. Filmed at the Ziggo Dome concert last year in Amsterdam, it will be the first official footage that we get to see from this massive tour. I saw the Stockholm gig (blogged about all three acts) and they obviously filmed that show as well. Interestingly, Babymetal has a movie in theaters in Japan coming up as well called “Legend 43 – The Movie”. Maybe they have given each other the go ahead to use some quick footage of themselves in the other bands film? We shall see. Any band that can put up a film at the cinemas has succeeded and reached a certain plateau. Good fun.

My love affair for Japan started in the early 1970s when Deep Purple released the classic “Made In Japan” album (1972). That album was a game changer. After that, everybody wanted to record live albums in Japan. Later, in 1975, when Deep Purple visited Japan for the final time before they broke up in the 1970s, the band was at its most flamboyant. Tommy Bolin on guitar (the guy looked like Elvis with long hair), David Coverdale on vocals (long before his Whitesnake band took off for the stars), Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals, Jon Lord on keyboards (the Gandalf of hard rock) and Ian Paice on drums. I was 15 when the pop magazines of the day printed articles and posters about this visit to Japan and I was totally taken in to how incredibly cool it all was. Later, we found out about the troubles they had gone through at that time, but to me the era – and especially the way they looked in Japan – always remained magical. And as the years passed, the live albums from Japan by countless bands kept on coming. The first actual band from Japan that I ever heard was Murasaki. So glad to know George Murasaki these days, and I will present a new interview with him on this blog before they visit Sweden in July. Culturally, I always loved Japanese movies. Godzilla, all the Akira Kurosawa movies (Toshiro Mifune was the John Wayne of Japan) etc etc. Over the years I heard some Japanese bands, Bow Wow, Loudness, but not too many. I loved the Japanese rock publications though. When I visited photographer Michael Johansson, whom often had pictures in them, I was delighted to check them out. I have collected many of them over the years and this has accelerated aggressively in later years. Enter 2017. I discover Babymetal. A bonafide bag of joy. In a world that was fairly boring and set, it was a great revelation. I know now that I share this opinion with a lot of old school rock fans. Just read the comments to their videos. Babymetal rekindled the spirit of rock and they also opened the gates to Japanese music for many people. I am sure they have had a massive impact. Books will be written about all this. But for me the music scene in Japan is just so brilliant and fresh. So much talent. Japan now has some of the best rock and metal acts in the world. Lovebites, Nemophila, Band-Maid, Bridear (so glad to have presented an interview with them on this blog), Fate Gear (keep your eyes open!), Roselia (pretty deep into the rabbit hole here!), Muses (Toto territory, but utterly brilliant), Hagane, Lonesome Blue, East Of Eden, Coven Japan, Unlucky Morpheus and many many others. The 2020s will in the long run be increasingly dominated by Japan. I am sure about that. The festivals and the rock publications that are not onboard the Japanese train will lose credibility fast. Their loss. Wow, this turned into a bit of a rant. And I was just going to thank the Tommy Bolin community for their support for the blog this morning! Funny how one thought can sometimes morph into something a little larger. Anyway, my love for Japan felt like a good subject matter. Had some fun writing this which is the main thing. Peace & love.

Word reached us today from the Babymetal camp that there will be Special Limited Editions (Blu-ray/DVDs) of “Legend – MM” (2024), “Legend – M” (2019) and “Legend – S” (2017) on July 10. This is lovely on so many levels. These were birthday shows for Momometal, Moametal and Su-metal. Second batch, they had them for Su, Moa and Yuimetal in the early days as well (only not presented like this, but they did have a couple of early singles with them all getting covers back in the day). Of course, the Su-metal gigs in Hiroshima in December 2017 was the first time they had to perform without Yui, due to her being ill. When they did the Moa show in 2019 they were a duo. With the Momo show they were a trio again. So we see a journey here. And the lore has always been awesome. So much fun. Love the covers for these as well. Grab them while you can.

Japanese rockers LustQueen will release their self titled debut EP on June 21. Ex-Drop Doll member Yuina (whom is also an actress) is handling the vocals. Fami (from Lovebites) is playing bass. Check out the new video “Ready, Steady, Go!” (the images seen here is from this video shoot). Great band. Very little information about them out there at the moment. You can follow them from the beginning if you so wish starting now. I know I will.

Added the Fate Gear mini album (30 minutes, 7 tracks) “Killers In The Sky Part 2” to the collection. Love the cover art by Haruka Mori. This edition also have a bonus DVD with the song “Unbreakable Wings” video, plus alternative takes that features all five members. This is actually a really good album. Starts with an instrumental introduction, then they go full throttle with “Unbreakable Wings”. However, they showcase a surprising depth and the music here has a lot of beauty and texture. Also, yesterday they announced that a new album called “The Vanguard Of Hades” will be released on June 19. Exciting times.

Summer Is On

Decided to see if you can really make your own ice Popsicles just by pouring in some beverage into these Ice Lolly Maker tubes and I used some Trocadero Zero for the experiment. Turns out that you can. Good to know. Summer has its little moments of joy, and why not?

As we enter the third day since Babymetal/Electric Callboy uploaded the video for “Ratatata” it has notched up over 2,000,000 views. And I have never seen so many reaction videos coming in so fast with such positive vibes (this must be what it was like back in 2014 when the world went nuts for “Gimme Chocolate!!”, but I was not aware of all this then). They are fun to watch, honorable mentions has to include the To The Dream reaction and to singer Jami Nunes falling into the Fox hole on her channel. Good fun. And things are happening over in Japan at the Fox Fest as Babymetal has performed “Brand New Day” with Polyphia as well as “Ratatata” live with Electric Callboy. Amazingly, some brave soul has captured this on camera so you can check it out on YouTube. How fast will this video reach the 5,000,000 mark? We shall see. Good times.

Japanese trio Trident has a new mini album out called “Spice X” in three different versions. I like all of the covers, but this is the best. Check out the songs on YouTube.

I have a long tall table (with a couple of high bar stools) in the kitchen and yesterday I came up with the idea to have a tray of good to have stuff (salt, sugar, spices etc) at the end of it. Turned out great. Now that I have it, I will add more stuff.

(My shot of said project this morning)
