Saturday 9.

Well, folks, woke up to more snow. I know most of you were following on FB, I did have to go out and about for research for my final paper and I did have work yesterday afternoon at the museum--and let me tell you, the weather was just miserable.  AND the heat was not working at the museum. It was so cold and bitter...winds were around upwards of 50 mph...You can read some of it here--although we are about an hour- hour and half south of there. We are 80 miles from Buffalo and 50 Miles from Rochester and an hour from the PA border. We still get Lake Effect off of Erie and Ontario though, even down here in the valley... anyways...onwards.

Oh, just to let you know, I did answer all your comments from yesterday.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The action begins when a letter falls out of the pocket of a brown overcoat. What color is your coat?

Well, I have several coats...but I do wear this, a women's Carhartt in Pink--I am just to lazy to go out in the hallway to take a photo. When we first moved here, we invested in good winter coats. This coat is super heavy. By the time you get "dressed" (gloves, hat, etc.) you can't move.

2) The lyrics ask if it "kinda strikes you sad when you hear our song." We don't want to be sad this Saturday, so we're asking what song makes you happy.

Happy by Pharell Williams

3) Right before this song hit the charts, Donna Summer hit the cover of Newsweek. Are there any magazines in your home now? If yes, who is on the cover?

Hmm... some farm magazines that has land, cows, chickens etc. and even farm equipment. grin--because I just can't help myself. LOL

4) Donna wrote the lyrics to this song, while producer Giorgio Moroder wrote the tune. Moroder is known as "the father of disco." Is disco a genre you enjoy?

Yes. Not all of it, but I do like the Bee Gees and Donna Summer.

5) This song got additional airplay throughout the 1980s because the game show The Price Is Right played it every time a contestant won a stereo. Today, the most popular audio equipment sold at Best Buy is a sound bar to improve the quality of TV audio. Have you added a sound bar or sound system to your TV?

Umm...yeah...that would be in the "man" department aka husband.

6) Moroder has won two Academy Awards for Best Song. The first was for "Flashdance ... What a Feeling" from Flashdance and the second was for "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun. Do you  have a favorite movie soundtrack?

Hmm...don't think so.

7) He grew up in Ortsei, Italy. Located in Northern Italy, the Ortsei economy is fueled by tourists who ski in winter, hike in summer and shop for woodcarvings all year around. Do out-of-towners find their way to your hometown more often in summer or winter?

HA! Bahwahahaha, Hornell only has 9,000 souls period. We do have two colleges nearby that help with our economy (we only have a small Walmart)...but we are pretty much "country" and not big city. The surrounding Finger Lakes get all the summer business.

8) Kourtney Kardashian was born in 1979, the year this record was a hit. Keeping Up with the Kardashians has been on since 2007. Have you ever seen it?

Who?

9) Random question -- When getting dressed in the morning, what's the second item of clothing you put on?

Umm...clothes, LOL.

Throwing snowballs. Have a great day, friends.

So, Keeping it Real...

First of, thank you for all the kind comments from  yesterdays Thankful Thursday. I have fallen behind yet again in answering the comments and emails. Let's keep it real...

Keeping it Real #1.

Most of you know my mil has congestive heart failure and dementia with mental illness mixed in and her husband (not my husbands father) is a severe epileptic with Parkinson's. Neither of them having driving licenses. We had to take their car from them, court approved of course (we are the court approved guardians and "finance" guru's who also control their banking). They are not responsible at all. We have a nurse come in 3 times a week. Every single day for the past 2 weeks the nurse has sent us out for this or that. Hence the reason for the "talk" yesterday. We.had.had.enough. We went from Pill Pak which worked great, to having them having a fit because it was too difficult to understand too having to go to Walmart to pick up prescriptions (way to many to's in that sentence, sorry about that). It wouldn't bother us so much, but neither of them have left the house in nearly 3 years, except for doctor appointments, which also have gotten out of hand. They do very little to help, if anything, their wants have out lasted their needs. They don't take any responsibility none, zip. Actually, I think they think it is darn right funny. She/ mil actually made the comment yesterday, "What the "f" is the big deal, you don't have anything to do!" Excuse me...so...its only getting worse and will remain so.

Onwards to Keeping it Real #2...

Court ordered $300 a month is suppose to go us. Half the time they/the in-laws don't have it. Especially with a $480 gas bill each month. I treated myself yesterday to Finger Lakes Opoly. Sounds like fun. Don't worry, receipts are kept just incase the court needs to see them. Again, my house has been overrun with their "stuff". Sounds like I am complaining. There is no support system, my husbands siblings refuse to help. The situation is only going to get worse (I keep saying that to prepare myself).

Keeping it Real #3.

My husband said, "My mother has caused you to start drinking,  huh?" Nah, he knows I use Guinness to cook the corned beef and other roasts. Besides, just keeping it real, I do like a good Guinness every so often. Besides, our house is always open to his Marine buddies who often stop by to reminisce.

It's been one of those weeks or last 2 weeks. We told all parties involved, "Don't bother us next week, we won't be around." We realized it has been our fault for not keeping boundaries.

Thankful Thursday

I just want to say, every morning I get up is a Thankful day. Can I get an Amen? Just keeping it real. However, let's jot down some thank you's.

Thank you to fellow blogger and bestie Sparky and her husband Steve for a beautiful early Birthday gift. I almost cried as this just about looks like the farm we had in Hudson, NY all those years ago. She knows the fondness and the need I have to go back--not that farm, but the need to go back to the lifestyle. I think though, this time / season in our lives, we will have to deal with what we have.

I know most of you were following on FB concerning the split beam in the basement-one of the main support beams. It has been repaired and even insulation has been added here and there. Not so funny when one was in the shower and heard a nasty sound and next thing she knew hubby was running up the basement stairs (he was in the shop) screaming like a banshee ((grin)).

old photo of my coffee cup, grin.

Coffee on these cold winter mornings. Y'all, it is currently 12*, under blizzard warnings and the winds have been blowing upwards of 50 mph. Yes, indeed, we have to go out and about today. Having issues with my mother in -law and her husband. We are the court appointed guardians and court appointed everything...

Since I am all about keeping it real...there is no 'support system', it's just us handling everything.

and our sweet landlady knocked on the door yesterday to tell me that Aldi had Corn Beef Roasts on sale for $1 a pound yesterday! Two was the limit...so, we each got two.

Tuesday Party for Friends Meme

I am really enjoying this Tuesday meme, Anne and thank you.

1.  You're having a lovely dinner party for friends and family.  What will you serve for appetizers, main course and dessert?

Oh, let's just make it for friends, shall we? How about a party for all my blog friends...I am a bit of an over achiever, so bare with me...

1. Assortment of drinks; tea, coffee, pop, punch, open bar.

2. Appetizers; how about an assortment of items?

Breaded mushroom caps

Caprese or Crudite (both?) Yeah, I think both.

Dinner?

Dessert:

My Berry Trifle and/or My Tiramisu--let's just go with both. Yeah...and coffee.

 2. Snow storm! You've got house guests and you're all stuck inside for the night. What do you prepare for dinner.  Will you  watch a movie? Which?

Dinner? We will be snacking on what I posted above with the Lasanga. Movie? Why would you want to watch a movie? If so, then it would be like some British tv show (Emma) or Chick flick movie. OR we could play games or just talk and giggle the evening away.

3. We are going into New York City for the weekend. Where do you want to go?

Serendipity

4. You are going to night school.  They offer courses in writing short stories, painting,   piano  or guitar lessons, simple home repairs, baking, and gardening.
Which do you pick  ( or make up one of your own)  and why?

Painting, baking and gardening. Why not? I have always wanted to be a pastry chef, alias, it wasn't meant to be, smiles. Way too much math for me, LOL.

For the record, if you were to ever come here, you would be treated like royalty (without the 'fuss', lol) and if you left hungry, it would be your own fault. My husband puts on a 'mean' BBQ in the summer time. Just a sayin.

Music Monday

Ha! Thanks Songbird for reminding me...its time for Music Monday. I'm feeling a little sad...a little nostalgic. Thanks to some realities hitting hard. So, its a Carole King and Traveling Wilburys kind of day.

1. So Far Away.

((missing family-my Dad's favorite saying is, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"-they've kept that promise/saying))

2. You've Got a Friend

((You'll always have a friend in me, no matter what. No matter how different we are, no matter how different backgrounds we have, no matter how different religions are etc.))

3. I Feel the Earth Move.

((For my husband. No matter how crazy things are, no matter how life leads us in different directions etc. You still make my Earth Move.))

Lastly, The End of the Line by the Traveling Wilburys.

((Well, just because I have to keep it reality--IT'S ALRIGHT EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT!))

'Politicking' on a Sunday...

'Politicking' on a Sunday...so, our sweet landlady knocked on the door a few times yesterday...one time for a spider, the other for her carbon monoxide alarm, and the last time to invite us for breakfast. I suspect the latter was the real reason.

She is retiring in April after 60 years working at the Elks Club/Lodge (she is the full time treasurer). She is madder than a wet hen as the state of NY is making the Lodge go 'digital' and she is refusing to learn the computer.

I kinda' did this backwards (taking photos). She said, "Since you are going to be needing a job soon, you might as meet and greet folks." So off we went. Ok, then...I didn't get photos of folks...just inside of the building.

The building was built in 1912 and my husbands grandparents were members. Feeling the need to just stay put and put down more roots. If that makes any sense.

Breakfast was very good; eggs, sausage, pancakes, potatoes (staple in a northern breakfast, I gather), fresh fruit. The boy wonder (son) and I had a Mimosa and hubby had a Bloody Mary (eww.)

All in all, a very good and productive morning.

Saturday 9

Joining in with the Saturday 9.

Saturday 9: Buttons & Bows (1948)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics extol the beauty of "rings and things and buttons and bows." When you're getting dressed, do you give much thought to accessorizing?

Yep. My socks have to match, colors, jewelry. etc.

2) Dinah Shore sings that she doesn't want to live where the cactus hurts her toes. Sam can sympathize, as she has a blister on one of her toes from where her winter boots rub. Do you have any aches and pains to report this morning?

Nope. Just the usual aches and pains of aging.

3) Dinah was such a popular entertainer that people were surprised to learn she earned a degree in sociology from Vanderbilt University. What is something we'd be surprised to know about you?

I'm ambidexterous

4) Dinah's was the best selling version of this song, which was introduced by Bob Hope in the movie The Paleface. Hope had success early in his career as a song-and-dance man on Broadway. Are you better at telling jokes, singing or dancing?

Umm...none of the above. I can't tell a joke, can't sing or dance.

5) Both Bob and Dinah donated their time to entertaining the troops in WWII. It was during a USO tour that Dinah met and fell in love with actor George Montgomery, who was serving in the Air Force. They were married for 20 years and had two children. Their daughter followed her parents into show business and became an actress. If a young person asked you for career advice, what would you tell them?

Follow your dreams and be happy. No sense in working in a field or job if you will be unhappy at it. Money isn't everything. Don't let folks tell you otherwise. Too bad it took me 50 years to realize that. I am also a firm believer that one is never too old to follow their dreams.

6) Dinah was an avid golfer and even sponsored an LPGA tournament. She was also an excellent cook who hosted TV cooking segments. Which would you find more relaxing -- an afternoon on the golf course or in the kitchen?

Both. I can play a mean game of golf and love it. On the other hand, I love being in the kitchen.

7) In 1948, the year this record was a hit, Scrabble was introduced. Do you prefer word games, card games, board games or jigsaw puzzles?

I like all of them and refuse to choose.

8) Also in 1948, LPs (33 1/3 rpm records) were introduced. Do you have any vinyl records in your home?

Nope and I want some with a record player.

9) Random question -- Which of these would you consider the greatest insult: to be called boring, untrustworthy or stupid?

I have been called all three (and recently).

 My answers

Stupid; stupid is as stupid does. (Meaning, look whose calling who. It takes a real big person to call another person names-with a big eye roll)

Boring; At least you know where to find me. (again, look at the source)

Untrustworthy; You can trust me with Ft. Knox and all its secrets (another words, shut up because you have no idea what your talking about. I am loyal to the core and yes, that goes with trustworthy)--I have pride with myself being a 'gatekeeper'.

We dropped off our SUV on Monday to the garage to have the brakes done. What day is this? Saturday. Still no SUV. 'Mama' ain't too happy, just saying.

Friday Foto(s)

I took this last Saturday while waiting for my husband to get out of Lowes.

Another bitter cold day. It is currently 13* and real feel 1*.

A sign from my favorite little boutique; Harmony Blue that I bought for next to nothing.

Just Because...

Just because...sometimes this girl needs a homemade chicken salad sandwich on Sourdough bread and I am the only one who will eat it and so therefore, I don't have to share. I would though, share that is ((the guys-ewwwwwww-grin)). It must be from living all those years down in the deep south. I never liked chicken salad before.

Until an older lady from church gave me a recipe because I commented on her chicken salad at a church function. Mine is loaded with pepper. Why pepper? Because I like pepper. I didn't add the grapes, you can't get grapes up here in the winter--oh wait you can--but it will cost nearly $7 for a bag. Umm...yeah...no.

...and it was so good. Just saying.

Yes, yes it is. Have a great day all.
