Commedia sportiva in cui il protagonista è Jackie Moon, proprietario-coach-giocatore della Flint Michigan Tropics, squadretta di fondo classifica pronta alla scalata alla massima serie.
La storia si svolge a Flint, Michigan (Usa), anno 1976. Jackie Moon (Will Farrell) è allo stesso tempo proprietario, allenatore, speaker, promotore e ovviamente anche giocatore degli sciagurati "Flint Tropics", franchigia che occupa il fanalino di coda dell'ABA (American Basketball Association) che non brilla certo neanche per gli incassi nelle partite interne.
Film simpaticoe divertente, si fa vedere anche se la storia è piuttosto trita e ritrita, comunque un Will Ferrel davvero bravo!

In “Semi-Pro,” Will Ferrell plays one-hit disco star Jackie Moon, who buys the mythical, oxymoronically named Flint (as in Michigan) Tropics, doormats of the American Basketball Assn., and installs himself as the team's improbable coach and starting power forward. Whether he gets naked and shows his flabby parts or not, Will Ferrell makes me laugh. And he does it in hit movies (Elf, Old School, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory), horrible movies (The Producers, Bewitched, Kicking and Screaming) and movies where directors edge him into something deeper (Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda, Marc Forster's Stranger Than Fiction).
Avec des films comme Une nuit au Roxbury, Présentateur vedette, Les Rois du patin ou bien Taladega Nights, Will Ferrell incarne l'une des expressions les plus réussies du cinéma burlesque hollywoodien d'aujourd'hui.
