Nou, ik maar denken dat gekleurde pentekeningen niet bestonden in de 17e eeuw. En ziedaar, een zicht op Bergen op Zoom en een zicht op Maastricht in de jaren '70 van de 17e eeuw, gemaakt door Josua de Grave, van wie diverse prenten en tekeningen hier te vinden zijn op de website van het Rijksmuseum.

Well, I used to think that coloured drawings didn't exist in the 17th century, but - of course - I was punished for my arrogance, when I browsed the drawings of Josua de Grave on the website of the Rijksmuseum (more piccies here!).
The first picture shows the town of Maatricht in 1670, and gives a rather medieval look of the town. Note the big gabled houses and the huge walls.
The second pic shows a view of the fortress town of Bergen op Zoom, in the (now) Province of Brabant. A more modern view, showing the brick houses with the typical tiles, the flat land around the town, which is representative of the dutch landscapes and townscapes.

Dit is een schilderij van de vergaderzaal van de Staten-Generaal van Dirck van Delen, gemaakt in de periode 1651-1671, waarin veroverde Spaanse vaandels te zien zijn. Let op de zeer slechte staat van de overigens uitermate fraaie vaandels.

This is a rather famous painting by dutch painter Dirck van Delen, made in the period 1651-1671, showing the great hall in the Binnenhof, the Hague, where the States General convened.

Above you can see various Spanish colours, captured in the 80 years war. Note the terrible state they are in (I don't think there's a colour left from this collection), but you can admire their beauty.

Het Rijksmuseum is druk bezig de digitale collectie flink uit te breiden, en na het doorzoeken van zo'n 1100 afbeeldingen over vaandels (!), kwam onder andere deze prent er uit, uit 1674, uitgegeven door Sweert in Amsterdam, gemaakt door Coenraet Decker. Meer info kun je hier vinden.



The Dutch National Museum, de Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is quite busy digitising it's collection, and after digging all morning through the updated collection, I found the above print, drawn by Coenraet Decker on the battle of Seneffe. I also found the accompagning text, explaining the numbers on the print.

In the left hand corner, the Count of Waldeck attacked by a French officer and saved by a Polish cavalry man, who slayed the Frenchman with his ax.

Op dit ruiterportret van Hendrik Casimir II, stadhouder van Friesland, Groningen en Drenthe is ook een zwarte page te zien. Hendrik begon zijn militaire carrière op negenjarige leeftijd als kolonel van de regimenten Nassau-Friesland (infanterie en cavalerie). In 1672 werd hij generaal in het Staatse leger. Hij zette de rivaliteit met zijn neef Willem III voort, die al door hun vaders begonnen was. In 1688 was hij Derde Veldmaarschalk, maar toen Willem III in 1692 voorkwam dat hij Eerste Veldmaarschalk werd, vertrok de jaloerse, opvliegende en weinig diplomatieke Hendrik voorgoed uit het Staatse leger. Mokkend bracht hij de rest van zijn leven in Leeuwarden door. In 1696 stierf hij en werd opgevolgd door zijn zoon Johan Willem Friso.

On this portrait of Hendrik Casimir II, stadholder of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe, a black page can be seen. Hendrik started his military career at the age of 9 as colonel of the regiments (horse and foot) Nassau-Friesland. In 1672 he became a general in the Staten army. He continued the rivalry with his cousin, Prince William III of Orange, which had started between their fathers. In 1688 he was Third Field Marshal but William III prevented Hendrik from taking the position of First Field Marshal in 1692. Resigning his post, the jealous, ill-tempered Hendrik withdrew to Leeuwarden, his capital city, where he sulkingly bided his time until he died in 1696.

Een ruitergevecht van de schilder Abraham Calraet (1642-1722). Opvallend het arcadische landschap en de lage-landen uitziende ruiters, met aan beide kanten met oranje sjerpen gekleed.

De plaat komt uit het Rijksmuseum. Zeer waarschijnlijk is het dezelfde schilder als hier, maar helaas is dat schilderij over het bezoek van Willem III aan Dordrecht slecht te bekijken.

Above a cavalry fight a painting by Abraham Calraet, which is now in the Rijksmuseum. Note the arcadian landscape and the low countries looking people, dressed the same in orange sashes.

Calraet is probably the same painter of this painting of the visit of William III to the city of Dordrecht, but the pic is very small.
