Dat oorlogsvoeren een zeer onprettige aangelegenheid is, lijkt me wel duidelijk. Hoe dat voor de burgerbevolking uitpakte is al in diverse publicaties over de 17e eeuw vermeld, en een van de laatste loten in deze stam is het werk van Leo Adriaenssen. Uitvoerig gedocumenteerd laat hij zien hoe brutaal vooral de Staatse troepen in het begin van de 17e eeuw optraden tegen de lokale bevolking.
Het is alleen erg jammer dat het werk soms erg pamflettistisch van aard is en duidelijk anti-oranje is, die door de schrijver zelfs vergeleken wordt met Stalin. Adriaenssen doet ook een beetje voorkomen dat alleen Brabant heeft geleden en de marxistische ondertoon is soms ook erg storend aanwezig. Adriaenssen is wel erg betrokken en heeft zeker een gedegen werkstuk afgeleverd, maar of dit nu een goed proefschrift oplevert, dat laat ik maar aan de lezer over. Overigens, al in 1669 schreef von Grimmelshausen al zijn Simplicissimus over de gruwelen van de oorlog.

The above book caused quite a controversy in the Netherlands as it deals with the effects of the States'/Spanish war in the county of Brabant on the local population. William of Orange is compared to Stalin and Maurice was a war criminal, is one of the least unpleasant things he mentions about the House of Orange, the States-General and the 'Hollanders', especially the capitalist one.
Despite it's obvious left wing and even marxist touch, it's a thorough work on tax extortion, systematic plunder, murder and brutal warfare on the borders of the Dutch Republic, showing the shapes of things to come for (States' and Spanish) Brabant in the late 17th century.
Reactions in the dutch press were divided between the left/right and the Orange/republican line, which is quite amusing to read. I still have a bit of doubt about the scientific value of the book/dissertation, ok he has put a lot of work in it but his conclusions are sometimes speculative and the Orange bashing is plain annoying.
