Le procédé comporte les étapes consistant à: mémoriser un geste prédéfini par un utilisateur et une instruction correspondant au geste (S101); lire un geste introduit par l'utilisateur (S102); déterminer s'il existe une instruction correspondant au geste introduit par l'utilisateur (S103); si oui, émettre l'instruction correspondante, et envoyer des données d'utilisation de la technologie à un terminal de collecte de données préréglé par un fabricant (S104); si non, n'émettre aucune instruction (S105). Une télécommande munie de la conception de reconnaissance de gestes permet de changer de chaîne ou de régler le volume de manière plus intuitive et conviviale, et permet à un fabricant de collecter efficacement, en temps réel, des informations se rapportant à l'utilisation de la technologie.
