Abstract

This invention relates to a composition for stimulating hair growth. The composition uses, as an active ingredient, a gestagen, preferably synthetic medroxyprogesterone acetate. The active ingredient is mixed with such adjuvants and additives as are necessary to render it topically applicable as a lotion or a shampoo. The invention extends to a method of treating hair loss.

Description

HAIR GROWTH STIMULANT
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for the therapeutic and prophylactic treatment of hair loss and extends to a composition for use in the manufacture of such a pharmaceutical composition and to a method of treating hair loss.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Baldness or the loss of hair is a condition which affects many men, particularly in later life. This is known as male pattern baldness. Hair loss can also result from any one of a number of disease treatment regimes, the most common being chemotherapy which is used to treat certain forms of cancer. Whatever the cause, hair loss often causes psychological problems.
A vast number of proprietary remedies claiming to promote hair growth are marketed but very few of these achieve the desired results. Compositions which do, at least partially, stimulate hair growth tend to have, as active ingredients, alpha-reductase inhibitors and one such composition utilises a vitamin A complex.
Gestagens, a group of female sex hormones produced during the ovarian cycle and during pregnancy, have been used as a contraceptive where they act by simulating pregnancy and preventing ovulation. The primary gestagens are oestrogens and progesterones. When so used the gestagens are administered orally in tablet form or they are injected intramuscularly to avoid having to ingest an oral dose most days of the ovarian cycle. Gestagens are also used in certain circumstances to combat hurstitutness or excessive body hair. In such cases it is also ingested orally. To the best of the applicant's knowledge, there are no cases of gestagens being used to promote or stimulate hair growth.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a pharmaceutical composition for use in the treatment of hair loss, to provide a composition for use in the manufacture of such a pharmaceutical composition and to provide a method of treating hair loss and particularly male pattern baldness.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
in accordance with this invention there is provided a pharmaceutical composition for use in treating hair loss said composition comprising a gestagen or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof together with such adjuvants and additives as are necessary to render the composition topically applicable to an area where stimulation of hair growth is desired.
There is also provided for the gestagen to be an oestrogen, preferably a synthetic oestrogen. Alternatively there is provided for the gestagen to be a progesterone, preferably a synthetic progesterone, further preferably medroxyprogesterone, and particularly medroxyprogesterone acetate.
There is further provided for the adjuvants and additives to be such as are commonly found in lotions, particularly hair lotions, shampoos, hair conditioners and the like.
There is also provided for the composition to be usable for therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment of hair loss.
In accordance with another aspect of this invention there is provided the use of a gestagen or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof together with such adjuvants and additives as are necessary to render the composition topically applicable in a method of preparing a pharmaceutical composition for use in a method of treating hair loss in a mammal comprising topically applying WO 00/18362 " d " PCT/ZA99/00102
said pharmaceutical composition to an area of said mammal where stimulation of hair growth is desired.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a method of treating hair loss in a mammal comprising topically administering, to said mammal, a composition comprising a gestagen or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof together with such adjuvants and additives as are necessary to render the composition topically applicable.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
In a first preferred embodiment of the invention synthetically manufactured medroxyprogesterone acetate is used as the active ingredient or gestagen. This as mixed with a commercially available hair shampoo in a concentration of between 0.1% and 5% by volume. The shampoo is used in the normal way to wash one's hair. In trial experiments performed by the applicant, regular twice weekly washing resulted in an increase in hair density and an increase in the rate of hair growth.
in a second preferred embodiment of the invention, synthetically manufactured medroxyprogesterone acetate is mixed with polyethylene glycol and water. The concentration of medroxyprogesterone acetate is between 0.1% and 5% by volume. This composition is applied to the scalp of an individual suffering from hair loss twice weekly and it is rubbed in well. It has been found that this treatment produces significant hair growth.
