To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. EMERY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Thayer, Union county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Swingletree- Hook, of which the following is a specilication.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for securing a cock-eye, toggle chain, trace end or other draft device to a swingletree.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the'accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan illustrating one form of my device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same on the indicated line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an end elevation illustrating a modified form of my device. Fig. 5 is a plan and Fig. 6 an end elevation illustrating a further modified form of my device.
In the construction of the device as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 10 designates a ferrule having a slight peripheral flange 11 on its outer end formed with a notch 12. An attenuated or apexed lug 13 is formed on the inner end portion of the ferrule 10 out of registration with the notch 12 and an attenuated or apexed lug 14 is formed on the periphery of the ferrule 10 between and spaced apart from lug 13 and flange 11. A hook 15 is provided and formed with a ring 16 adapted to surround the ferrule 10 and the opening of the ring 16 is formed with an extension 17 radially thereof which adapts the hook to pass on to the ferrule by the straddling of the lug 13 by the extension 17. Thereafter the ring 16 is retained on the ferrule 10 by the lug 13 and flange 11. The ferrule 10 is adapted to be mounted on one end portion of a swingletree 18. When it is desired to attach a cock-eye, toggle chain or trace end to the hook 15, said hook is moved out of the position shown, where it is confined between the lugs 13 and 14, circumferentiallyI of the ferrule until the lug 14 registers with the extension 17, and then said ring and hook are moved outwardly so that the extremity of the hook passes through the notch 12 and can receive engagement of the cock-eye. The cock-eye is mounted on the hook 15 and the said hook is turned circumferentially and moved along the ferrule until the extremity of the hook passes through the notch l2 and the extension 17 passes over the lug 14, and thereafter the hook is moved forwardly into the position shown. When draft is applied to the hook 15 by the trace attached thereto, said hook assumes the position shown in Fig. l, but when the trace is slackened, the hook assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. In either event the ring 16 of the hook is confined normally between the lugs 13 and 14 when in use and between the lug 14 and flange 11 when the trace is detached, until in the former position the trace can not be accidentally detached from the hook.
In the construction of the device shown in Fig. 4, the flange 11 is omitted and a plurality of points or radial lugs 11a are substituted for the flange. The lugs 11a perform the same function as the flange in retaining the ring 16a on the ferrule 10a and a lug, identical with 14, but not shown, conlines the ring when in use.
In the construction of the device as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, a cylinder 10b is employed and is formed with an integral stem 19 threaded on its exterior end and adapted to be screwed into a bore in one end of a swingletree 18a. The cylinder 10", of less diameter than the extremity of the swingletree and therefore the end of the swingletree performs the same function in this con struction as the lug performs in the construction above described. In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 a lug 14a is emn ployed to confine the ring 16b of the hook 15b in proximity to the end of the swingletree when in use, and this lug registers with a notch 12a in a flange 11b formed on and circumferentially of the outer end of the cylinder. The manner of attaching and detaching a trace, toggle chain or cock-eye manually relative to the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is the same as that described in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
