AXEL W. EDSTROM, OF RED OAK, IOWA.
NECK-YOKE RING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed April 6. 1907. Serial No. 366.750.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL W. Eos'rnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Oak, in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Neck-Yoke Ring, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to neck yoke attachments which is in the form of a ring adapted to be applied to the side of a leather neck yoke center commonly used for connecting the neck yoke to the pole of a vehicle. The said ring is provided with a flange engaging hook which will prevent accidental separation of the pole from the neck yoke center. The ring is provided with an opening which receives the pole and as it is composed of metal it protects the leather against friction and wear. A leaf is hinged to the said ring and is provided with means for attachment to the side of the neck yoke center. By thus hinging the leaf to the ring the flexibility of the leather neck yoke center is retained and at the same time provision is made to prolong the life of the connecting means between the neck yoke and the pole and to prevent the accidental separation of the said parts.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ring applied to a neck yoke center. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the neck yoke center showing a modification in the manner of attaching the ring thereto.
The attachment consists of the annular body or ring 1 from the edge of which depends the hook 2. Said body is provided at diametrical opposite sides with ears 3 which are adapted to receive rivets or bolts for securing the said body'to the side of the leather neck yoke center 4. The leaf 5 is hinged to the body 1 at a point diametrically opposite the hook 2. Said leaf 5 may also be secured to the center 4 by means of a rivet or a strap 6 may be used for securing the leaf 5 to the said center 4. The said leaf is provided with the space openings 7 through which the strap 6 passes and then around the neck yoke center 4 and having its ends connected together by suitable securing means such as a buckle or its equivalent. In applying the neck yoke center equipped with the attachment to the pole 8 the hook 2 is turned laterally into engagement with the flange 9 usually employed upon such poles. As the said hook receives the said flange the annular body 1 will lie directly against the side or face of the flange and. thus the ccnter4 is spaced from the flange and protected from wear. The opening through the body 1 receives the pole 8. As the flange 9 is usually pitched at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the pole S the annular body 1 will be held in an inclined position while the leaf 5 by reason of its hinged connection with the body 1 may assume a vertical position, thus, the said hinge connection between the body 1 and the leaf 5 does not materially reduce or interfere with the flexibility of the leather neck yoke center 4. A neck yoke center, being thus equipped, cannot become accidentally disengaged from the pole of the vehicle thereby permitting the same to fall to the ground and resulting in accident of more or less seriousness.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is In combination with a neck yoke center, a neck yoke ring comprising an annular body positively attached to the yoke center and having a flange engaging hook, a leaf hinged.
to the body and having spaced openings and a strap passing through said openings and around the neck yoke center and slidably engaging the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AXEL W. EDSTROM.
