Description
f e tinitd ,gister @anni @fit PERLEY LAFLIN, OF WARREN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN J. SPRAGUE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Lette/rs Patent No. 86,845, datedVFeb'r-uary 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT SAFETY-CLOCK KEYS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Know-all men by rthese presents:
That I, PEnLnY LAFLIN, of Warren, in the county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clock-Keys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved'clock-key, and
. Figure 2 represents an end view ofthe same.
To enable those skilled in theart to which my invent-ion belongs, to make and use the same, I will prooecd to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists in combining a spring-handle with the stem of a clock-key, in-the peculiar manner hereinafter described.
In the drawings, the part markedA is the stem of the key, in the end, a, of which a hole is drilled, and a piece of wire is then passed through the end, a, and formed into a coil, O, after which the ends of the wire, c c, are brought downward, and, in this instance, inserted in the end of a metallic tube, B, andV there securely fastened by soldering, or otherwise.
The tube B is bent-at b, toform the crank by which the key is turned and to give the crank greater strength,
a piece of wire, n, is inserted in the end, D.
By bending the wire around in the circle O, a spring is formed between the handle D and the stem A of the key, so that in winding the clock, when the end of the springer cord is reached, the key will spring slightly, as shown by red lines, iig. 2, thereby preventing the sudden jerk or strain which is produced by the use ofthe common key, and which is the cause of many accidents, such as breaking the cords or springs, and otherwise disarranging the mechanism ofthe clock.
In lieu of the tube B, to form the crank, or handle, a piece of wire may be'used, vto which the ends c c of `the spring-Wire may be fastened, in any suitable manner. Also, in lieu of the round wire used for the spring C, a dat wire may be used.
The long, o1" projecting end of the stem A is provided with a square hole, fm, to it the winding-stem ofthe clock, in the` usual manner. i By the foregoing description, it will be seen that by the use of my improved clock-key, a large per cent. of the accidents to clocks will be obviated. thereby rendering it a very desirable acquisition for'all who own clocks.
Having described my invention,
VWhat I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture, is`
A clock-key, having the stem A combined with the handle D and wire spring C, substantially in the inanner shownand described.
` PERLEY LAFLIN.
