Description
WILLIAM-W.v SLY, OFSOUTH HAVEN, MICHIGAN.
Leners Patent No. 90,964, dared June s, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' SNAP-EOOKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sane.
To all whom t ma/y conce/rn.-
Be it known that I,W1LLLAM W. SLY, of South Haven, iu the county of Yan Buren, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snap-Hooks; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specication. f The nature of this invention relates to an improve ment in snap-hooks for connecting togethrlinks, straps, and other parts of harness, and consists in pivoting to a proper hook va vibrating fork through a curved slot l in its shank, in such a manner that by the action of a spring under the shank of the fork, the point-of the outer prong of said fork will be securely held, when4 the snap is closed, in a socket in the point of the hook.
In the drawingsv A represents a snap-hook, provided with the usual ears a, and a recess in its base. B is a fork, having twoV prongs, b and b', projecting from'its shank c. d is a curved slot in the shank of the fork, through which passes a screw, e, by means 'of which it is pivoted to.the base of the hook.
D is a spring, yvhich may be coiled, as shown, or
Q-shaped, and so placed in the bottom of the recess,
'hook A, substantially as and for the that one of its ends will exert an outward pressure on the base of the shank of the fork, causing the ends b. or b to enter a socket, j, in the point of the hookA.
.When the snap is closed, the outer prong 'b ofthe fork is forced by the action of the spring to enter the socket f, and thus securely retain the link or cock-eye within the snap.y
To disengage a link from the snap, with the snap in one hand, and the link in the other, press the link against the base of the fork, which will compress the spring-aud permit the fork to moveA the length of its slot, disengaging the prong b from the socket in the hook, which may be then opened outwardly, and the link removed.
While I disclaim the use of a coil or other spring in snaps, for moving any part thereof in a straight line,
What Ido claim as my invention,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The arrangement of the vibrating fork B, provided with the prongs b and b and the curved slot d, and operated by spring D, in combination with-the recessed purpose above named.' v
WILLIAM W. SLY.v
