Referring now to the details of construction of the features above referred to and as illustrated herein, they are made as follows: The disk or rotative part I is mounted on the platen-shaft-c outside of the adjacent end plate B. Said disk is provided on its outer face with an elongated axial hub I,in which the shaft a has bearing. The inner face of the disk bears against a collar M, mounted in and fixed to the platen-shaft by means of a set-screw m, by which inward movement of the (lisk'on the shaft is limited. According to the present invention said disk is positively locked to the platen-shaft by means of a suitable clutch device, which must be released in order to permit the disk to rotate on said shaft. Referring now to the construction whereby said disk is locked to the platenshaft and is released therefrom to permit it to be turned on the platen-shaft,said parts are made as follows: N designates a clutch-sleeve surrounding the platen-shaft between the disk and the sleeve (1/ of the turning-knob. Said sleeve is provided with a reduced bearing portion 11, that has bearing directly on the shaft, and with a larger inner end at, that fits over the adjacent end of the hub I ofothe disk I. The adjacent ends of the clutchsleeve and the knob-sleeve a, are provided with clutch-teeth, which serve to lock said clutch-sleeve to the platen-shaft. Said sleeve N is free to slide endwise on the platenshaft, but is non-rotative relatively to the hub of the disk I, whereby when the clutchteeth are engaged and the platen-shaft is rotated the said clutch-sleeve and disk are likewise rotated. The non-rotative endwiseshifting connection between the sleeve N and the hub of the disk is afforded in the present instance by means of a pin or stud n extending radially through the larger end of the sleeve N and engaging a short slot i, formed in the hub of the disk. The clutch members are held normally engaged by means of a spiral eXpansively-acting spring 0, surrounding the shaft within the larger part of said sleeve and interposed between the end of the diskhub and the annular shoulder formed between the larger and smaller parts of said sleeve. Said spring also serves to hold the disk against the collar M. When it is desired, therefore, to rotate the disk on the platenshaft, the clutch is released by forcing the clutch-sleeve inwardly against the action of the spring 0 and while still holding the sleeve inwardly rotating the sleeve and disk to the desired point. When the sleeve is released, the spring acts to force the clutch-teeth into engagement and lock the disk to the shaft. In order to facilitate the manipulation of the clutch-sleeve described, it is shown as provided with a flange N, which may be readily grasped by the fingers.
The pointer L, which is mounted on and turns with the disk I, is in the construction illustrated in the drawings attached to a radial arm L; secured to an annular member having the form of a hub or sleeve L, which is mounted on and is adapted to rotate about the disk-hub I. The said hub or sleeve L is held from endwise movement on the diskhub by a ring '1'", which surrounds the outer end of the disk-hub and is secured thereto by means of a screw The locking device for holding the pointer in an adjusted position with respect to the pointer or indicator J on the disk I consists, as shown in the drawings, of a spring-actuated locking-detent P, mounted in the arm and adapted to engage one of a series of circumfercntially-disposed locking holes or recesses Q Q, formed in the outer face of the disk I. Said locking-detent P has the form of sliding pin mounted in a cylindric casing Z on the arm L, and said pin is held normally engaged with one of the locking-recesses by a coiled spring Z, that surrounds the detent-pin within the casing l. Said spring bears at one end against an inwardly-facing annular shoulder at the outer end of the casing and is connected at its opposite end with the detent-pin in a manner to transmit endwise movement thereto. The detent P is provided at its outer end with a head or knob p, by which it may be drawn outwardly by the fingers to release it from the recess Q preparatory to adjusting the pointer L relatively to the pointer J. The indicating-disk is preferably provided with a cylindric peripheral surface on which is formed the graduations or scale-marks referred to, so that said graduations and the numbers applied thereto may be readily observed by the operator. In connection with the scale so marked on the disk I the stationarypointer K is extended horizontally from the end of the carriage over the inner edge of the peripheral surface of said disk and the pointer L extends at right angles from its sup orting-arm inwardly over said cylindric sur ace.
The operation of the indicating device described will be understood from the following The general purpose of said paper-move: ment-indicating device is to indicate to the operator the extent of angular movement of the platen required when inserting a sheet of paper into the machine in order to bring the first line of printing a desired distance from the top margin of the paper according to the space occupied by the heading on the sheet. More particularly the indicating de vice is designed for use in cases where it is desired to make out a number of bills or invoicesand to make carbon copies of the same on a single strip or long sheet of paper. In a case of this kind it is desirable that the copies should be spaced as closely as possible on the record-strip, but at a uniform distance apart, or with equal spaces between the several records or copies, and the line-indicating device herein shown is employed to readily insert a new sheet for each separate original bill or invoice which has been removed from the machine in such manner that the first printed line of the carbon copy shall be located at a desired distance from the last printed line of the preceding carbon copy, while insuring that the first line of the original bill or invoice will come with certainty in proper position with respect to the top margin of the sheet on which said original bill or invoice is printed. For instance, assuming and the platen then turned backwardly to move or shift the record-strip backwardly to such a point that when a new sheet is inserted the part of the new sheet on which the first line is to be printed will be located at such distance from the last line of the carbon copy a as to leave a desired space between the copies.
In-using the indicating device described the operator sets the pointer L at a distance from the poi'nterJ equal to the distance which it is necessary to turn the platen backwardly after printing the last line of one bill or invoice in order to start a new original sheet in the machine in such manner that the first line of the next bill or invoice when started at the proper place on the original sheet will on the copy-sheet come at a desired distance 'of two, three, or more lines from the last line of the preceding carbon copy. This may be done as follows: When the last line of the first bill or invoice has been completed, the
operator turns the disk I so as to bring the. pointer J opposite the fixed pointer K. He then turns the platen backwardly (the disk turning with the platen) until the platen reaches a proper position for the insertion of a new sheet, allowance being made for the" desired space between the firstand-suc'ceeding carbon copy. .Such movement of the first original and carbon-sheets is effected wlnle the original sheet is in place in order to determine the extent of the backward movement'required to enable the printing to be started on the next succeeding original bill with the proper space between the copies on the carbon strip. The angular distance between the pointers J andLwill now correspond with and indicates the distance which the platen 'must be turned backwardly after the printing of each original sheet to bring the copy of the. next blank original sheet at the desired distance from the copy of the preceding original sheet and at the same time afi'ords the desired spacing between the copies of the carbon-sheet.

until the pointer L is opposite to the stationary pointer K. The new sheet of paper 's then inserted by being thrust into themachine in the usual manner, and the platen is thereafter turned forwardly to carry the record-sheet and the new original sheet into position for printing, which position is determined by the new original sheet.
It follows that by the use of the device described the operator, having once determinedthe angular distance'for a number of linespaces which the platen must be turned back wardly for starting a new sheet, can in each instance or when inserting each new original sheet for an original bill or invoice invariably turn the platen backwardly to the same distance according to the angular distance between the pointers J and L, and will thus be enabled to invariably bring the first printed line of the carbon copy the same distance from the last printed line of the previouslymade copy rbn said record-sheet, thereby leaving uniform spaces between the several carbon copies of the record-sheet. Moreover, the operator is enabled to locate the carbon copies on the record-sheet as closely together as desirable-without danger, on the one hand, of bringing together or overlapping said carbon copies and without liability, on
on the other hand, of separating the carbon copies on the record-sheet so widely as to cause an objectionable wastage ofpaperon the carbon and record sheets.

Moreover, as the graduations correspond with the line-spaces if the operator desires to make the space between carbon copies greater or less this can be done by merely shifting the pointer L backwardly or forwardly by one or more spaces, as desired. It will be observed, therefore, that the. graduations on the disk I have no function to perform in the usual op eration of the disk or wheel, the only parts coming into use at such time being the ointer K on the frame and the fixed and ads able pointers on the disk, the angular distance 1 of which latter from each other determines ustthe distance through which the platen is to be turned. backwardly in inserting each new sheet.
While the disk I is shown as having a projecting part forming the pointer J, yet the same result will be attained by providing said disk with a score-line or zero-mark for the scale. Moreover, the stationary pointer K may be replaced by a mark or score-line on the end plate of the carriage-frame.
From what has been heretofore stated it will be understood that the term pointer as used in the appended claims is intended to mean as well a disk provided with an indicating-mark or score-line or a part of or upon the carriage-frame having such mark or scoreline, as a projecting part, arm, or indexfinger, the parts referred to in either case equally performing the functions of an indicating means to determine the line-space position of the platen or the extent to which it is turned.
I claim as my invention-.
1. The combination with a rotative platen, of two pointers which turn with and have angular adjustment relatively to the platen and have also angular adjustment relatively to each other, and means for positively locking said pointers to rotate with the platen.
2. The combination with a carriage-frame and a rotative platen, of a pointer on the frame, and two pointers which turn with and have angular adjustment relatively to the platen, and have also angular adjustment relatively to each other, and means for positively locking said pointers to turn with the platen.
" 3. The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of two 1 pointers rotative on the 0 shaft and adapted r angular adjustment with respect to each other and a positively-operating clutch device for locking said pomters to the shaft to rotate therewith.
4. The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of a part rotative on said shaft, two pointers, one fixed to said part, and the other angularly adjustable thereon, and a positively-operating clutch device for looking said part to the shaft.
5. The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of a part rotative on said shaft, two pointers, one fixed to 'said part and the other angularly adjustable thereon, and a positively-operating spring-pressed clutchfor ocking said part to the shaft.
6. The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of a disk rotative on said shaft, two pointers, one of which is'fixed to the disk and the other of which has angular adjust ment on the disk, an endwise-sliding sleeve on said shaft having interlocking but non-rotative connection with said disk, and a clutch member on said sleeveadapt'ed to engage a, complemental clutch member on the shaft.
7. The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of a disk rotative on said shaft, two pointers, one of which is fixed to the disk and the other of which has angular adjustment on the disk, an endWise-sliding sleeve on said shaft having interlocking but nonro tative connection with said disk, and a clutch member on said sleeve adapted to engage a complemental said sleeve being rovided with a flange af fording a finger-ho d by which the sleeve may be operated.
8. The combination with a rotative platen clutch member on the shaft,
and its shaft, of a disk rotative on said shaft and provided with circumferential scale marks or graduations, a pointer carried by and having angular adjustment on said disk and a positively-operating clutch device for locking said disk to the shaft.
9. The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of a disk rotatively mounted on said shaft and provided with a hub, a part rotative on said hub and carrying a pointer,
said pointer being rotative with respect to the disk, means for locking said pointer to the disk, and a positively-operated clutohdevice for locking the disk to said shaft.
10. The combination witha rotative platen and its shaft, of a disk rotatively mounted on said shaft and provided with a hub, a part rotative on said hub and carrying a pointer, said pointer being rotative withrespect to the disk, means for locking said pointer to the disk, and a clutch device for locking the disk to said shaft, embracing an endwisesliding sleeve on the shaft having endwisesaid hub, said sleeve being provided with one of the members of a clutch adapted to engage a complemental clutch member on the shaft.
1 1 The combination with a rotative platen and its shaft, of a-disk rotative on said shaft and provided with a hub, two pointers one fixed to said disk and the other having angular adjustment relatively thereto, and a clutch forlocking said disk to the shaft comprising a sleeve having bearing on the shaft movable but non-rotative connection with and surrounding and having endWise-movable but non-rotative connection with the hub of said disk, said sleeve being provided at one end with clutch-teeth adapted to engage clutch-teeth carried by a part rotating with the shaft, and a spring interposed between said hub and a shoulder in said slehve for holding said clutch-teeth in engagement.
