Thus, by properly calculated gearing.v for each line space which vthe typewriter platen turns, the.drivev wheel lturns'in a similar direction at a corresponding speed, the-movement being finally transmitted tothe dial whichi-in turn moves a corresponding distance.
The dial 22 -preferably'is marked as shown in Fig'l with three annular concentric zones or circles ofdivisions and numbers. Each subdivision onx'the outer or largest circle corresponds to one singlespace'turn of the laten; the Imiddle' zone or circle indicates' y veach subdivision, one double-space turn of the platen; Whileeach division of the smallest or inner circle indicates one triple space turn of the platen. Thus, itis seen that the outer circle is divided into siXty spaces, the middle one into thirty spaces, andthe inner circle into-twenty spaces or the ratiol of three of the first toi'one of `the last being thel proportion-of the-single'to the triple spacing.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes 'a practical embodiment of my, invention, I do not limit myself strictly tothe mechanical details `herein illustrated, `since manifestly the same can beconsiderablyvaried without departurefrom the'spirit of the invention as definedin the appended'claims. For example, the number of driven elements `in the drive gearing supported bythe 'casing for actuating the indicating means andthe character of the ldrivenv and drive elements may -fbe varied, as may-also the particular-means for giving relative movement :to 4the pointerjor lhaving driving connectionwith said drivenelement, and drive mean connected with said spindle, said spindle being adapted to be turned by the last-mentioned drive means and relatively to said driven element for setting the turna-ble indicator'device independently of said driven element.
