Be it knownthat I, ALLIN W. HEwITT, ,a citizen ofthe United States, residing 1n Bogota, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specifica- I made one following another.

"Said stop 26 projects from a disk '28, which is attached by screws 29 to the inner face of the wheel 11 and carries the pin 21 of the pawl-andratc'het mechanism.
Sometimes the bill to be written contains only a single item and sometimes very many items, so that the platen may be rotated through one or more revolutions by the linespacing mechanism 6 during the W1 iting of the bill; but I have provided means whereby the platen may be rotated backwardly only a predetermined distance regardless of the position of the platen when such backward rotationbegins. To this end I provide upon 1 the pin 11 a sto i 30, which engages the under side of the stationary arm 27, thereby to prevent the wheel 11'from rotating forwardly with the platen, so that said wheel is always stationary during. the forward rotation of the platen and when rotated backwardly can turn only through the are, which is predeter mined by the relative positions of the stops 26 arid upon said wheel. The stop 30 is formed which is revoluble relatively to the wheel;
' and the latter is provided with a rack 32,
consisting of a series of ndtches curved around the platen-axis. A'tooth 33, carried by the disk 31, mayengage any of said notches and hold the stop 26 in any desired relation to the stop 30, so as to regulate the extent of the backward rotation of the platen. In order to facilitate rotative ad- 3 5 justment of the disk 31, said teeth 33 is carmay be their rotated independently of the wheel 11, and the handle 38- may be moved to release the spring 34, so that the teeth 33 thereon may spring into engagement with another notch 32. In operation the wheel 11 is turned backwardly until the stop 26 strikes upon the top of the arm 27. Then e finger-piece 38 is moved to release the teeth 33, whereupon the disk 31 is rotated forwardly until the stop 30 strikes the under side of said arm 27. Then a bill is inserted at the back of the platen in the usual manner. T hen the pinion is-retated forwardly by means of the wheel 11 until the first writing-line on the bill is brought to the printingpoint. During such rotation the stop 30 remains stationary against the. arm 27. Then the handle 38 is moved to lock the disk 31 to the wheel 11, so that the distance separating the stops 30-and 26 corresponds to the depth 'of the, ill-headthat is, to the extent of the printed matter on the bill-head. The writing of the bill may now proceed'line by line,

completed, it is withdrawn from the machine *without disturbing the carbon and record sheets. The platen is then rotated backwardly by means of the hand-wheel 8, and
the clutch mechanism automatically locks the wheel 11 to the shaft 10, so that the wheel revolves backwardly with the platen until both are arrested by the contact of the stop 26 with the top of the arm 27. Then a new bill is inserted and the platen rotated forwardly by the finger-wheel 8 until the first line on the bill reaches the printingpoint. In this manner the carbon copies of successive hills are caused to follow one an.- other upon the same record-sheet. The extent of the backward rotation of the platen "is determined mechanically, while the extent of the subsequent forward rotation 18 readily determined by means ofthe usual front scale provided upon said Underwood machine,
so that the operator is not obliged to make any arithmetical calculations and is enabled to handle hills with expedition.
It is'sometimes desired 'to regulate the depth of margin at the top of the-recordsheet, especially when there is considerable the wheel 11, the bill at this time being iii position for writing the first line thereon. Before writing, however, the platen is turned backwardly until the index 40 registers with the arm 27,v whereupon the carbon and record sheets are introduced between the bill and the platen, the leading edge of the bill being then somewhat in advance of the diggading edge of the record-sheet. Then the platen is rotated forwardly until the bill is in position for the first line of writing, which line will fall upon the record-sheet nearer the top thereof than will be the case on the bill. The index 10 is adjustable, so as to secure different depth of margin upon the recordsheet as may be desired by difierent uses, said index being for this purpose detachably connected by a'thumb-screw 41' to the disk 31, the latter having a series of similar threaded holes 42' extending along its outer border to receive said thumb-screw, although any other suitable means for adjusting the index may be pro vided.
