PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS J. SMITH, OF VIN SON, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,194, dated September 6, 1904:.
I Application filed Aprilfi, 1904. Serial No. 201,873. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANoIs J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Vinson, in the county of Paulding and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows of that class point or earth-engaging element is connected by means of what is known as a heel-bolt with an ordinary vertically-slotted or bifurcated standard, the object of the invention being to increase the life of the plow by enabling the point or earth-engaging memher to be used until a very small piece or stub remains.
Vli'ith this end in view the invention consists in c directly with the plow-standard by means of the heel-bolt and adapted to clamp the point between them, so that said point may be extended sufficiently beyond the standard to enable it to operate efficiently as long as even a very short portion thereof remains.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying draw ngs has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of the invention, it being understood, however, that I do not necessarily limit myself to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but reserve the right to such changes, alterations, and modificatlons as may be resorted to within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the members constituting the invention separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a portion of a plow to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through a plow-standard equipped with the invention.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by similar numerals of reference.
The improved device which'constitutes this invention includes a pair of clampingplatesamping means adapted to be connected namely, a bottom plate 1 and a top plate '2. The bottom plate is longer than the top plate and extends below the lower edge of the latter, the upper edges of said plates being in registry with each other. Each of the plates 1 and 2 is beveled at its lower edge, the bevel of each plate being in the direction of the other plate, andthe said plates are provided near their upper ends with longitudinally or vertically disposed slots 3, which are in alinement with each other. The upper plate 2 is provided in its under side, at the lower edge thereof, with a shouldered recess 4, and the under plate is provided with an upwardly-extending square stud 6, adapted to engage the bolt-hole of the plow-point.
8 designates the plow-point, which is of the ordinary construction and which is provided with a square perforation 9, which is normally intended for the passage of the heel-bolt, by
means of which said point while in good condition is secured in operative position direct upon the bifurcated or slotted standard 10 depending from the plow-beam.
When the plow-point has been worn so short as to be under ordinary circumstances of no further use, it may be placed in engagement with the stud 6 upon the bottom plate 1 of the device. The top plate 2 is now adjusted in position in such a manner that the shouldered recess 4, at the lower edge thereof, shall engage the upper edge of the plow-point, and the bottom and top plates 1 2 are disposed in contact with the top or upper side of the plow-standard 10, the heel-bolt 11 being'inserted through the slots 3 in the clampingplate and through the standard and the nut tightened thereon. The clamping-plates l and 2 will thus not only be firmly secured in position upon the standard, but they will clamp between them with the utmost degree of security, the plow-point 8, which may now be extended any desired distance below the lower extremity of the standard, thus enabling it to beefliciently utilized until practically worn out. r
Having thus described my invention, I claim n 1. The combination with a slotted plowstandard, of a pair of plow pointengaging lower edges, one of said plates being extended 1 5 below the other and provided with a plowpointengaging stud and the other plate being provided near its lower edge with a plow-pointengaging recess, and a heel-bolt for clamping said plates ad justably upon the plow-standard and compressing them upon a plow-point.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS J. SMITH.
