EEICE.
PATENT v TELEPHONE SPECjI-Al; DIRECTORY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of` Letters Patent No. 727,880, dated May 12, 1903.
4Application tiled April 3, 1902.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS M. BANNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, iu the county of San Francisco and State of California; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Special Directories, of which the foliowingis a speciication.
My invention relates to an improved special directory for telephones, the object of my invention being to rovide a device of this character upon whic) special telephone-numbers may be written and which shall be so located with reference to the telephone as to 'be always conveniently near for inspection to ascertain the telephoneinumber of any person with whom it is desired to communicate.
My invention therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a telephone having my improved directory secured thereon. YFig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the directory. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the device in position.
Referring tothe drawings, 1 representsthe transmitter of a telephone, and 2 the mouthpiece therefor. Said mouthpiece has a neck 3, screwed into the transmitter, and anannular shoulder 4, which rests against the face of the transmitter-casing. Between said shoulder and transmitter-casing I interpose my improved special directory, which comprises a plate of Sheet metal 5, apertured at the center, as shown at 6, to pass around the neck 3 of the Inouthpiece. Said plate has its edges turned, over to form guides 7 to receive a sheet of thick paper or cardboard 8, 'likewise centrally apertured and having blank spaces 9 for writing down the names and numbers of individuals frequently communicated with by the user thereof. When the sheet of paper has been filled with names or when some of the names are no longer in constant use and it isV desired to Substitute other names, itis an easy matter to remove the sheet of paper and replace it by afresh sheet. The sheet-metal plate 5 will always hold and protect the paper in a position to be easily read by the userof the telephone.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to

place apiece of paper around the neck of the telephone-mouthpiece,since telephone companies thus attach a narrow ring of paper having thereon the number of the telephone. My in vention diers from this in that whereas the small piece of paper used in the above way does not extend beyond the face of the transmitter and requires no additional support beyond Vsaid `transmitter-face itself my directory comprises a rigid and inflexible sup' port upon which may be inserted and secured in place a succession o'f sheets, which may be substituted one for the other as fast as filled, the su pport extending a considerable distance beyond the face of the transmitter and providing a sufficiently large and stiff surface to contain a considerable number of names and numbers, said surface being also stiff enough to permit names and numbers to be written thereon when in position.
An important feature of my invention is that the device is useful for advertising purposes, as the upturned edges of the metal plate can have advertising matter suitably enameled or otherwise marked thereon.
I claim- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the telephone transmitter and mouthpiece of a plate of stiff inflexible material having a circular aperture tting around the neckof the telephone-mouthpiece and secured between said telephone-mouthpiece and the face .of the transmitter, said plate extending beyond the surface of the transmitter, substantially described.
2. In a device ofy the character described, the combination with the telephone transmitterand mouthpiece of a plate of sti inflexible material having a circular aperture ittin g around the neck of the telephone-mouthpiece and secured between said telephone-mouthpiece and the faceof the transmitter, Said 'plate ektendingbeyond the surface of the transmitter, and having its edges turned over to form guides and a sheet of paper in said guides, substantiallyas described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
` LEWIS M. BANNAN.
