TELEPHONE-INDEX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed January 14, 1907. Serial No. 352,095.
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. KITCH- ENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Indices; and I do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in telephone indices and particularly to indices used in combination and connection with the mouth piece of a telephone, my objects being as follows :To produce an index which will permit of the alphabetical arrangement of names whereby'each may be readily found and read, said index having interchangeable sheets or cards which may be easily removed for the purpose of writing thereon, and immediately replaced. These objects I accomplish by means of a series of index cards ar ranged in combination with the mouth piece of a telephone; also by such other and further construction as will appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a telephone trumpet with my improved index installed thereon. Fig. 2- is an end elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of an index sheet or card.
1 designates the transmitter of a telephone provided with the usual mouth-piece 2. Encircling the said mouth piece 2 is a plurality of index cards 3 provided with tongues 4 at their lower ends, said cards 3 being provided with lines 6 for the purposes hereinafter set forth. Said cards 3 are also provided with interior orifices 3" for the purpose of permitting the insertion of the cards 3 over the said mouth piece. Arranged over the said mouth piece 2 in front of the said cards 3 is a rubber band or washer 5 for the purpose as will appear. On each of the tongues 4 of the cards 3 is arranged a letter of the alphabet, the letter A. being upright on the first card and the other letters being inverted on their respective cards.
In practice the mouth piece 2 is unscrewed and the band 5 is first inserted over it and then the cards 3 are likewise inserted over said mouth piece and the same is screwed again into position. The band 5 is used as a tension to keep the cards 3 in any desired position.
In practice on the front card on which is the letter A the names and numbers are written over the said letter. On the others they are written under the letters as shown in Fig. 2, since said other letters are inverted so that when the cards are rotated from their normal conditions the reading matter will be right side up. The tongues 4 may be used as finger pieces in turning the cards in such position as to read the writing thereon.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a handy phone index which accomplishes all the objects as set forth in the preamble of this specification.
While I have set forth in this specification the main details of my invention, still in practice many small deviations therefrom will probably be resorted to, none of which will, however, form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the kind described a plurality of index cards, a letter of the alphabet being arranged on each of said cards, that letter on the front card being arranged upright on said card and those on the remaining cards being inverted, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the kind describedatelephone, a mouthpiece therefor, a plurality of cards encircling said mouth piece and an elastic band encircling said mouthpiece and bearing against said cards as set forth.
3. In a device of the character. described a telephone, a mouth piece therefor, a plurality of cards provided with interior orifices receiving the said mouthpiece, and an elastic band completely encircling the said mouth piece and bearing against the foremost of said cards, as set forth.
4. In a device of the character described a card and those on the remaining cards being telephone, a mouth piece therefor, a pluinverted, as and for the purpose set forth. 1o rality of index cards completely encircling In testimony whereof I affix my signature the said mouth piece, an elasticband encirin presence of two Witnesses.
'5 cling said mouth piece and bearing against SAMUEL A. KITCHENER.
foremost of said cards, a letter of the alpha- Witnesses: bet arranged on each card, that letter on the PERCY S. WEBSTER,
front card being arranged upright on said FRANK H. CARTER.
