MEMORANDUM-CASE.
Application filed August 17, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memoranda-Gases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to n ake, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a memoranda case adapted for the reception of small memoranda pads.
My improved memoranda case is of such form that it is well adapted for advertising purposes, in that the advertisements may be placed or embossed in any suitable manner on the back and the lid thereof, and the case is of such convenient and attractive form as to render it desirable to be retained permanently by the user, and to be refilled by the memoranda pad as often as the same becomes exhausted, or the case may be used, owing to its novel construction, to contain stamps, visiting or business cards, railroad tickets, change or the like.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved memoranda case in a closed position, said case, as is common in cases of this kind, being held in a closed position by a pencil. Fig. 2 is a plan. view of the case open; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section oi the improved memoranda case taken 011 line w-m of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The improved memoranda case is preferably made of flexible sheet metal of any suitable kind, as brass, tin, copper or aluminium. The body of the case comprises a back portion a provided with an integral turned-over end-lip b at its upper portion, and an integral tubular pencil receiving element 0 formed on one of its longitudinal edges. The turned-over end-lip b is provided with a stop (Z arranged to engage With the lid e, said stop being secured to the edge of the turned-over lip b on the inside there- $pecification of Letters Patent.

of in any convenient or suitable manner, or if desired, can be formed integral therewith. This step (Z is also adapted for engagement with the memoranda pad in order to serve the function of detaching the individual leaves from the pad.
To one of the longitudinal edges of the back portion a is secured by means of a hinge 7a, the lid 0 of the box, which is also provided with an integ al pencil holding element 7", corresponding to the integral pencil holding element 0 of the back portion a. The hinge ll: is preferably provided with a spring g, which will tend to open. the lid when the pencil it is released from the pencil holding elements 0 and f. The lid 6 is further provided with an inwardly extending flange 2' near the bottom thereof, which when the lid 0 is in closed position, abuts against the inner face of the back portion a, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby. forming a closed compartment. Altl'iough I have shown the lid 0 provided with the flange 1?, it is to be understood that the back portion a may be formed with the flange which will serve the same purpose.
j represents a fastening means secured to the turned-over end-lip b, in any convenient manner, to which a chain or the like may be secured.
The memoranda pad shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, as is common in devices of this kind, is held in position on the back portion a of the case by the turnedover end-lip b, and the lid 0 is held in locked engagement with the back portion a by the pencil in which engages with the pencil receiving elements a and f, which are of ordinary construction in devices of the class to which my invention relates.
I am aware that heretofore memoranda cases have been made in which the lid was pivoted to the turned-over end-lip b, but I am not aware that devices of this kind have been provided with a lid pivoted to one of the longitudinal edges of the back plate, so as to open like a book, and that the lid or back plate has been provided with an offset portion or flange i near the bottom thereof, which when the lid and back plate are in a closed position, will form a closed compart ment, thereby enabling the device to be used to carry stamps, cards, railroad tickets, change or the like.
Experience has demonstrated that the or ganization above described, is a highly ellicient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not care to restrict myself to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement herein set forth, it being obvious that minor variations thereof not involving the exercise of invention may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein described and claimed not involving invention, I consider as within the scope and terms of my claims.
I claim:
1. A pad holder or case, comprising a back portion having an integral turned-over lip portion provided with an offset portion adapted to engage a memo-randa pad and an integral pencil receiving element extending from the longitudinal edge of said back portion and a spring-actuated lid provided with an integral pencil receiving element hingedly connected to the longitudinal edge of the back portion.
2. A pad holder or case, comprising a back portion having a turned-over lip portion adapted to engage a memoranda pad and a pencil receiving element extending from the edge of said back portion, a lid provided with a pencil receiving element pivoted to the longitudinal edge of the back portion, and means located on either the lid or back portion adapted when said lid and back portion are in closed position to form a closure for one end of the case.
3. A pad holder or case, comprising a back portion having an integral turned over lip portion provided with an offset portion adapted to engage a memoranda pad and an integral pencil receiving element extending from the longitudinal edge of said back portion, a spring-actuated lid provided with an integral pencil receiving element hingedly connected to the longitudinal edge of the back portion, and means located on either the lid or back portion adapted when said lid and back portion are in closed position to form a closure for one end 01": the case.
4. A pad holder or case, comprising a back portion having an integral turned-over lip portion provided with an offset portion spaced away from said back portion, said oilset portion adapted to engage a memoranda pad and an integral pencil-receiving element extending from one of the longitudinal edges of said back portion, a springactuated lid or cover, provided with an integral pencil-receiving element extending from one of the longitudinal edges of said lid, hingedly connected to one of the longitudinal edges of the back portion and an integral offset portion located on the lower portion of said lid adapted to engage with said back portion to form a closure for one end of said case.
This specification signed and witnessed this 8th day of August, 1912.
