SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,795, dated June 30, 1896. Application filed. April 16, 1895. Serial No, 545,971. (No model.) Patented in England December 28, 1894, No. 25,201.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN EDWIN J AMES BONN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of The Pharmacy, Brading, Isle of ight, England, have invented a certain new or Improved Box or Container for Rosin or the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 25,201, hearing date December 28, 18%,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved box or container especially adapted for containing the rosin used by violinists and the like, or any other substance to which it may be applicable, and which can be readily opened by simply pressing a finger against one portion of the container, whereby the rosin or other substance is exposed for use, the container automatically closing so as to protect the same when the pressure is released.

This improved devi 3e consists of a troughshaped receptacle in which the rosin or other substance is placed and held, and which is hinged to the lower edge of a similarly'shaped case or box for containing it, the pin of the said hinge having for a portion of its length a spiral spring wound around it, one end of which spring being bent up and bearing against the outer side of the said receptacle for forcing it back and keeping it in its closed position. A portion of the front face of the case is cut away for the purpose of permitting the finger being pressed against the rosin-receptacle in order to force it back into its open position.

Figure 1 of the accompanying sheet of drawings is a front View of my improved device, Fig. 2 being a back view, and Fig. 3 a crosssection thereof. In these views the container is shown in its closed position. Fig. 4: is a cross-section showing the container in its open -p0Sll3l011, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view thereof likewise in its open position.

a is the receptacle for holding the rosin or other substance, which may be held therein by an inner metal lining a.

b is the case, to the lower edge of which the receptacle is hinged at b.

c is a spring coiled around the middle portion of the hinge-pin, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The end of this spring is turned up, as shown at c, and bears against the outer face of the receptacle a, so as to keep the latter in its closed position within the case Z).

The front face of the case Z) is cut away at b in order to permit of the finger being pressed against the inner face of the receptacle a to force it into its open position.

In order to expose the rosin or other substance d for use, the receptacle acontaining it is forced back, by pressing the finger against its inner face, as before described, until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 5, and when done with, the pressure of the finger is removed, whereupon the receptacle is forced back by the spring 0 into its closed position within the case I), wherein it is completely inclosed and safely secured.

Having now fully described the nature of my said invention, what I claim,. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The improved device for holding rosin comprising the receptacle a provided with a lining a, the case b hinge b and opening 12 and the spring 0 formed with a projecting end 0' substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
