O. L. DAVIS.
TICKET CASE OR HOLDER.
Patented May 31, 1892.

WITNEEEEEJ:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE L. DAVIS, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
TICKET CASE OR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,005, dated May 31, 1892. Application filed December24, 1890. Serial No. 375,665. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the eityand county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Ticket Cases or Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein similar numerals of reference designate like or equivalent parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 represents a central vertical lon-' gitudinal sectional view of my improved ticket-case with tickets in position; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same with the cover raised for the insertion of the tickets; and Fig. 3, a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of theconstruction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, Figs. 1 and 3 being upon an enlarged scale. p
The object of my invention is to provide a safe and handy case for receiving, holding, and conveying railroad, car, and other tickets which are issued joined to one another in the form of a long band, or, as is commonly termed, on a string, of such construction as to per mit of only one ticket being removed therefrom at a time, they being placed therein joined together, and not, as in the forms now known and used, separated one from another.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a box or casing made of any desired material, preferably metal, of slightly-larger size than the tickets designed to be carried therein. This box 1 is provided with a false cover, shelf, or table 2, (preferably formed integral with or firmly attached to the side walls thereof,) which extends over and covers, preferably, about twothirds of the length of said box 1. At the inner end of this shelf or table 2 is a roller 3, revolubly mounted upon a pin or journal 4., secured at each end to the side walls of the box 1, or the roller itself may revolve in journal-boxes cut in or attached to such walls.
5 is a cover provided with a central slot 6 and an end slot 7, preferably attached to the box 1 by means of a hinge 8. This cover 5 is also preferably provided with a tang or extension 9, having a depression or hole 10, adapted to slip over a projection or pin 11 in the end of the box 1 when the cover is down, and thus hold the same firmly in place.
In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 3 the box 1 is made considerably longer than the tickets and is provided with a partition 12, the roller 3, revolubly mounted upon the pin 4', being placed beyond this partition 12, and the box 1 is provided with a sliding instead of a hinged cover, as shown.
The operation of my improved ticket case or holder is as follows: The desired number of tickets, joined one to another in the form of a long and narrow band, are folded back and forth one upon another in alternate folds, as shown, and the cover 5 being raised, all but the first ticket are passed under the roller 3 and false cover, table, or shelf 2, and willthen be in the position shown at 13 in Figs. 1 and 3. The ticket not passed under the shelf or table 2 is then folded down upon the top thereof and the cover closed. Then by simply pressing downward and forward with the thumb or finger upon said ticket through the slot 6 in the cover 5 the same will be forced through the slot 7, as shown at 14: in Figs. 1 and 3, and at the same time it draws the second ticket into position upon the table or shelf 2 under the slot 6, and this operation being repeated it will be seen that each ticket as it is forced out from the box draws the succeeding one out from under the table or shelf 2 over the roller 3 and onto said table 2, from which it may also in turn be removed in the manner mentioned.
It will be seen that the table or shelf 2 and the roller 3, or either of them, serve simply as a bearing or bearings, over which the tickets are fed from the case in the operation of the device, as described.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 3 the operation is precisely the same as above described, except that the bundle of tickets 13 must be placed behind the partition 12 and the first ticket passed over the top of said partition before it is passed under and over the roller 3 onto the table or shelf 2. In this form of construction I prefer to have the box 1 open at the end next the roller for convenience in threading the first ticket under said roller, the opening thus formed being preferably too closed when the cover is on by a downwardlyprojecting end 15 upon said cover, as shown in Fig. 3. In either form, however,l may use a hinged, sliding, or any other form of cover desired, or I may make said box 1 in the form of a drawer to slide within another box or cover provided with the slots 6 and 7, or the front end of the cover 5 in any form may be omitted, thus doing away with the slot 7, and
10 the cover maybe attached to the box by side hinges or in any convenient manner.
It is evident that many changes and modifications other than those herein shown or described may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, and I do not limit myself to the exact forms of construction shown, and it is also evident that myinvention may be put to many other uses than those herein mentioned.
Having now fully described my invention, its construction and operation, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following, Viz
1. A ticket holder or case having a cover provided with a slot, a roller revolubly mounted beneath the cover, over which the tickets are passed, and a slot or opening through which the tickets are discharged from the case, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ticket holder or case adapted to carry a string of folded tickets, consisting of a box or casing having a cover provided with a slot, an opening through which the tickets are discharged, and a bearing or support revolubly 3 5 mounted beneath the slotted cover, beneath which the folded tickets are placed and over which they are fed from the case, substantially as shown and described.
3. A ticket holder or case adapted to carry a string of folded tickets, consisting of a box or casing provided with a slot, an opening through which the tickets are discharged, and a bearing or support revolubly mounted beneath the slotted cover, under which the folded tickets are placed and over which they are fed singly by pressure exerted upon them through the slot, substantially as shown and described.
4. A ticket holder or case having a shelf or plate, as 2, a roller, as 3,1'evo1ubly mounted therein, and means for feeding the tickets over the shelf and roller from the case, substantially as shown and described.
5. A ticket holder or case having a table or shelf partly covering the same, a roller revolubly mounted at or near one end of the table or shelf, and a cover provided with a slot, as 6, substantially as shown and described.
6. A ticket holder or case provided with a shelf or plate partly covering the same,a partition, as 12, a roller, as 3, revolubly mounted in the case, a cover, and means for feeding the tickets from the case, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, this 16th day of December, A. D. 1890.
