Description

I (No Model.)
W. M. HOUSVER CLIP FOR STUBS.
Patented Feb. 11, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. HOUSER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CLIP FOR STUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,278, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed October 26, 1889.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HOUSER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clips for Stubs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This is a device for holding the stubs in a check or other book when the stubs are folded back against the first cover of the book. It is made detachable and adjustable, as Will be hereinafter described.
' Figure I is a perspective view of the device with the parts detached. Fig. II is a top view showing the device applied to a check-book. Fig. III is a detail showing the under side of the catch. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the clamp.
1 is a check-book having covers 2 and 3. At 4 are seen parts of the cheeks, and at 5 the stubs, of which a number are folded back upon the cover 2.
The clip has two similar side pieces 6, each having one end bent into a catch 7, which engages over the edge 8 of the cover, and an end 9, which is bent inward at right angles to the edge 8, so that the parts 9 of both pieces are in line with each other and adapted to enter the opposite ends of a tube 10, which thus forms a connection between the two side pieces, as seen in Fig. II. The preferred. construction is shown, in which each of the side pieces has, in addition to the parts '7 and 9, parts 11, 13, and 15 parallel with the side 8, and parts 12 and lat parallel with the part 9; but I do not confine myself to the exact details as described under numbers 11 to 15, in
elusive.
I 16 is a clamp or tie composed, preferably,
Serial No. 328,291. (No model.)
of a strip of sheet metal having'its end bent into the form of hooks 17, which engage the parts 13 and prevent the lateral spreading of the de vice. This clamp is not regarded as an essential feature, because the catches 7 may be made to engage so tightly 0n the cover as to prevent their disengagement with any ordinary handling of the book.
It will be seen that the clip may he made to fit books of different widths without any change of the tube 10, and that still more variation is allowed by using a tube 10 of different length, no change being needed in the side pieces 0. WVhen the clamp 16 is used, however, it must be changed to conform with any change of width in the clip. The elasticity of the parts 6 is suiiicient to allow part over. the stubs to be raised to allow additional stubs to be passed beneath.
I claim as my invention- 1 1. A clip having two distinct side pieces 6, each having at one end a catch 7, adapted to engage a boolecover, and at the other end a part 9 at right angles to the edge 8 of the cover, and the tube 10, adapted to receive the ends 7, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a book-cover, of a clip adapted to press down stubs upon the cover and having catches adapted to engage the edges of the cover, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a clip adapted to hold down stubs on a cover, of the two side pieces 6, with catches 7 and ends 9, a tube 10, receiving the ends 9, and a clamp 16, e011- nect-ing the parts 6, substantially as set forth.
\VILLIAM M. IIOUSER.
